App'lication fil'ed June 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatyI, ROLAND J. Gon'rz, a
citizen of the United 'States, and a resident of Toledo, in thecounty of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and "useful case may be readily placed in position and secured while the springs are held compressed.
The invention may be contained in structures in which their details differ from each other. To illustrate a practical application of the invention I have selected a structure containing the invention as described hereinafter. The structure selected is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a side View of the transmission bands of a Ford machine and the structure containing the invention. Fig. 2 illustrates an end view of the device and the edge view of one of the bands. Fig. 3 is a top view of the device. Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line 4l-4 indicated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of the device and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 indicated in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the bands 10 are provided with the usual brackets 11, through which extend the bolts or shafts 12. The shafts 12 are provided with suitable cams that are operated by cams connected to the pedals of the Ford automobile which co --act to draw the bolts or shafts 12 so as to move the ends of the bands towards each other in a manner well known in the art. On each of the bolts or shafts 12 there is located a spring 13, positioned between the brackets 11. The springs 13 are expansion springs and are of a length} sufiicient to yieldingly oounter-act the movement to draw the brackets towards each other. Thus the springs 11 tend to separate the brackets 11 on each band and to cause the bands to open and thus release their frictional engage; ment with the disks or wheel on which they operate.
In order to relieve the brackets and the shafts 12 from the tension of the springs 13,
1923. seriai uo. 646,975;
I have provided arn'eans -for 'comp'ressing the springs. Itconsists of=a pair ofepivotally connected sheet metal parts bent in'the formof abox andprovidedwiththe sides or clamping members "14, the. ends'partsf15 and the top portions 16. The parts of the T box are: I'pivotally connected "together by means of the threaded rod 17 that extends I through openings fdrmed- -in the parts 15.
The top portions 16 are made in the form of cams,-'that is to say they are provided with the relatively'sloping edges 18 and 19. A nut 20 is located on the threaded rod and is provided with a lug 21 that extends upward from therod 17 and between the relatively sloping edges 18 and 19. The spring 22 surrounds the rod 17 and its ends engage the two parts of the box shaped device. It is so bent as to cause the relatively sloping edges 18 and 19 to move toward each other except as they are held in their relative positions by the lug 21. The spring" 22 operates to press the edges of the parts of the box against the lug 21. The rod17 is provided with a head 23 that may be in the form of a handle or a thumb nut'that' r is secured to the rod for the purpose of conveniently rotatingthe rod, As the rod 23 is rotated the nut 20 and its lug. 21 is moved along the rod, with the result that the edges 18 are separated by the lug or' allowed to approach each other by the spring 22 which keeps the edges against. the lug, according to the direction that the nut 20 is moved along the rod.
.The clamping members '14 of the'box are provided with recesses 24 that are so positioned relatively to each other that the box may be placed on the bolts or shafts 12 and so that the bolts or shafts 12'will be locatedin the recesses 24. The box may be opened 7 up so that the sides may be placed at the ends of the springs and thebox pushed down over the rods or bolts 12. The clamping members may be closed toward each other by the rotation of the rod 17 and thus press the end of the spring toward each In a device of the character described, a pair of clamping members, a rod for pivot ally connecting the members together, means 1 ing members to move towards eachother.
' Q. In a device of the character described} a pair of clamping members; a threaded member extendingparallel'to the clamping faces of clamping members, awedge means operated by the threaded member for caus ing the clamping members to move towards each other. I v 3 3.- In a device of theicharacter described, a pair of pivoted clamping members, a threaded member extending parallel to the clamping faces 01 the clamping members, the clamping members having opposing edges inclined oneto the other and a block for'causing the clamping faces to move to-- wards each other. p p v In a device of the character described;
a pair of clamping members pivotally'connected together and having edges sloping towards each other, a member for operating on the saidedges for pivotally moving the said clamping members towards each other.
5. In a spring compressor for Ford 'autoni'obile bands, a be); shaped device formed of vtvvo parts, eaclr parthaving recesses for receiving the draw rods of the bands near the ends of the springslocated'on the rods, a threaded rod for pivotally connecting the said parts, the said parts having Wedge shaped surfaces, a'imember located on the rod for separating the said surfaces to cause the said parts to compress the said springs. In testimony whereof, I" have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
