Enenrsrna citizen of the United States, and a resident of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slider Controllers for Presses, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to devices for controlling sliders for presses. In printing; presses and cutting and scoring presses of the reciprocating or fiat bed type, the roller bearings on which the reciprocatingbed travels are usually mounted on members called sliders which are themselves adapted to move back and forth over the bed tracks. Where these sliders traveljust one-half as far in each direction as the bed-the rollers will have a rolling contacton the tracks as well as on the bed and friction is reduced to a minimum. l
Where the sliders are moved by 'bl'le bed only theyslip more or less, especially when the bed reverses, so that the sliders out of their proper positions relatively to the bed partly due to the momentum of the sliders and partly to other causes. TlllS' causes the sliders to bump at the end of their strokes or at the time they reverse. In some cases devices have-been provided to cushion the sliders at. the ends of their strokes and in some cases mechanism in the form of gears has been used to drive the sliders back and forth thedesired distance;
One or" the defects in former devices of the first type has been that-springs of; very limited length have'been used as a matter of necessity and they wear out quickly, aside from other disadvantages. In the sec ond mentioned type of controller the sliders were always reversed-at the same points and as a result depressions were made in the tracks at the points of reversal, this being These depressions had to be eliminated after a time by regrinding the' whole tracks which is a difficult thing, especially in. the places where the presses areused. The object of the present inventionis to overcome the objections to both the above types and to retain the advantages of both. The present; device permits the sliders to change theirpositionoccasionally suiiiciently to eliminate thegrooving or guttering ac tion on the tracks and at the same time it tends to. correct or restore the sl ders to their in Figures i 1922. intended positions if they a; displaced to an undesirable extent. Inthe present deviceit is feasible to use very much longer springs so that theyare'more durable..,The device also holds the sliders against lateral dis placement. Other advantages will be'apparent from the following detailed description.-

Referring first to the construction shown to 3 'I have shown the slider at one side onlyv of thepress but it will be apparent that the device is duplicated at the opposite side of the press. I,have shown part of one. of theside frames 34 of a flat; bed press an impression cylinder 35 and the reciprocating bed 11, theremainingparts being omitted to simplify the drawings,
since they are not necessary. to an underthe tops of these rollers 13and the; rollers in turn have; their hearing on the track-'12]v so thata roller bearing is provided on which the bed may reciprocate almost without friction.- The greatest efiiciency is attained; that is, the deviceoperateswith minimum friction, when the slider travels back and, forth one half the distance traveledbythe bed, this-repres'entingthe rectilinear movementof the axes of the rollers 13.
Bolted tothe slide bar 15 near each end thereof arethe castings 16'and 17, and; there is a rod 18 having its endsjsecurelyzfixedin these jcastings so. that the rod l8 -extends parallelwith the slider and the tracks or parailel to the direction of motion of the bed. This rod, therefore, reciprocates with the slider in the direction of its length. In this form of my invention there i casting 19 firmly secured to the track12 at a point in the middle of the run of the slider and it has an aperture through which the rod 18 passes and in which aperture the rod may slide frecly. Around this-rod 18 there is a coiled spring 20 near one, end of the rod and there is a similar spring 21' surrounding the rod near its opposite end. There is a collar 22 against which one end (left end in Figures 4 '1 and 2) of the spring 20 abuts and there is a similar collar 23 fixed to the rod '18 against which onerend (the right hand end in Figures 1 and 2) of the spring 21 abuts. These collars are securedto the rod 18 preferably by set screws 18 to permit of their adjustment" in position upon the rod. The
washer 2%, preferably a combination of leatherand metai, is attachedtoor placed against one end of the spring 20 and is slidab-le along the rod 18; and a similar. washer '25 is attached to or placed against the end 7 of the sprin 21 andis' likewise slidable along the rod 18.
Operation: When the bed moves toward the left there would be a tendency for the slider 'to continue after the' bed stops, due to its momentum, and the present device may be'adjusted to permit this to some degree,-
but before the slider reaches its extreme left position in Figure 1 the washer 25 strikes the casting 19 and from then on the spring 21' is compressed between the washer 25 and the collar 23 and this spring finally arrests the movement of the slider. When the slider moves to the right the compression of the spring 21-is released. Near the extreme end of the movement to the-right the washer 24 comes up against the member 19 and the spring 20 is compressed until it finally arrests the slider in this direction. The slider is'not arrested exactly in the same point at each stroke in either direction, so there is no local wearing or guttering of the tracks. 1 When the bed reverses and'commences to move either to the right or to the left either the spring 20 or the spring 21 is under compression between themember 19 and the collar 2a or the collar 25. As the bed reverses theslider has a tendency to lag behind momentarilydue to its inertia and in" such case the compression spring 20 or 21, as the case may be, provides a force tending to overcome this inertia and to either start the slider with the bed or to cause it to make up for any loss in motion by advancing it along the. track; Thus, while the slider is 'not fnecessar ily'fixed in relationto the bed at 1 alltimes there is a. tendency to correct any momentary difference in their relationship. It-will beapparent that the springs 20,
21 may be made long enough to make them durable and smooth in their operation without extending the length of the. tracks. It will also be apparentthat the rod 18' and member 19 serve to hold the slider against lateral displacement without other means. 7
In the form shown in Figure 5 the bear- 7 ings 26 and 27 are fixed to the track 12 and V the rod 28 is fixed in these bearings and consequently it does not move. A block 29 is fixed to the slider and as it reciprocates it brings up first against the movable washer 24.- to compress the spring 20 against the caring member 31 and on the reverse mo-' tion itbrings up against the movable washer 25 to compress the spring21-against the bearing member 30. .The springs performthe same function as in'the first form of the invention. 7 r
In Figure 6 the bearing members 30, 31' are fixed to the slider the same as in Figure.

Having described my invention, what I claim is: V
1. In a press the combination with a track and a bed reciprocating on said track, a reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said'bed travels and I means for cushioning said slider comprising a spring arranged parallel and to one side of said slider and relatively movable/members acting on said spring to cushion-the ac tion of said slider. V
2. In a press the combination with a track and abed reciprocating on said track, a reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels and means for cushioning said slider comprising i? V a spring arranged adjacent and alongside said slider, and relatively movable members acting on said spring to cushion the action of said slider. r

In a press the combination with atrack and a bed reciprocating on said track, a reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels and means for CllSl'ilOIllIlWSZLld slider, comprising springs arranged parallel and to one side of said slider and relatively movable members acting on one of said springs to cushion the action of said slider when moving in one direction and acting on another of said springs to cushion the action of said slider when moving in the opposite direction.
4. In a press the combination with atrack and a bed reciprocating on said track and a reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bedtravels, and means for cushioning said slider, comprising a rod, a spring guided on saidrod and relatively movable means for compressing said spring to cushion the action of said slider.
5. In a press the combination with a track and a bed reciprocating on said track and reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels, and means for cushionin said slider, comprising a rod arranged parallel and to one side of said slider, a spring guided on said rod, and relatively movable means for compressing said spring to cushion the action of said slider.
6. In a press the combination with a track and a bed reciprocating thereon, a reciproeating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels, and means for cushioning said slider, comprising a rod, springs guided thereon and relatively movable members for compressing one of said springs when said slider moves in one direc cating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels, and means for cushioning said slider, comprising a rod arranged parallel and to one side of said slider, springs guided on said rod and relatively movable members for compressing one of said springs when said slider moves in one direction and for compressing another of said springs when said slider moves in the oppositedirection. i I
8. In a press the combination with a track and a bed reciprocating on said track, a reciprocating slider having revolving bearing members on which said bed travels, and means for cushioning said slider, comprising a rod, a spring guided on said rod, a collar adjustable along said rod against which one end of the spring abuts and a relatively movable member for compressing said spring to cushion said slider.-
