Description
May 27,1930. 5; NORDSTRO'M EXTRAGT'ING TOOL Filed Dec. 6. 1928 INVENTOR.
. ATTORNEY.
50 between the plates 12 and Patented May 27, 1930 UNITED STATES EDGAR NORDSTROM, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN EXTRACTING TOOL Application filed December My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in an extracting tool adapted particularly for extracting zerk caps from their mountings.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an extracting tool of this kind which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture and highly eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of spaced engaging members mounted on a movable plate and provided with a cam for movinig said plate to effect a closing together of said engaging members. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this invention, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention,
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the invention showing the device in open position,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the engaging members in closed position, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The invention is particularly adapted for removing zerk caps 7 from the plate 8 on which they are mounted. These zerk caps are commonly used where it is desired to lubricate by means of a pressure lubricating un.
b The invention comprises a plate 9 having an opening 10 formed therein in which is slidably positioned a pair of parallel or aligning plates 11 and 12 which are recessed on their inner surfaces at one end and which have their ends 13 turned inwardly to form gripping surfaces. These plates are provided each with an inwardly projecting boss 14 on their inner surfaces and are flared outwardly toward one end of their outer surfaces. The inner or en%ging surfaces of these bosses are curved. ivotally mounted 11 by means of Serial No. 324,118.
the pin 15 is a handle 16 which is formed curved as at 17 to provide a cam for engaging the upper surface of the plate 9 and effecting its downward movement on the members 11 and 12 to cause them to move into approach. A spring 18 is mounted on the bolt 19 which is projected through the plates 11 and 12 and serves as an abutment for the handle 116 in its rocking operation.
As shown in Fig. 2, when the plate 9 is moved to the upper position, the spring 18 will serve to move the upper ends of the members 11 and 12 into approach so as to separate the inwardly turned edges 13. When in this position, these edges are engaged over the base of the zerk 7 and a rocking of the handle will force the plate 9 downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3, the members 11 and 12 rocking on the bosses 14 so as to securely grip the cap 7. When in this position, the cap 7 may be pulled from its mountings. In the movement of the plate 9 downwardly, binding of the plate is prevented because of the large area engaged by the curved surface 17. Plates 11 and 12 also serve as a guide for the plate 9 in this movement.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tool of the class described comprising a plate having an opening formed therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening in alignment with each other, said plates being flared outwardly at their outer surface at one end, the inner surface of said plates adjacent said end being recessed and having the edges thereof directed inwardly to provide gripping surfaces; a boss formed on the inner surface of each of said plates and having curved surfaces engaging with each other, the movement of said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in one direction effecting a rocking of said pair of plates on said bosses.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a plate having an opening formed therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening in alignment with each other, said plates being flared outwardly at their outer surface at one end, the inner surface of said plates adjacent said end being recessed and having the edges thereof directed inwardly to provide gripping surfaces; a boss formed on the inner surface of each of said plates and having curved surfaces engaging with each other, the movement of said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in one direction effecting a rocking of said pair of plates on said bosses; a cam for moving said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in said direction.
8. A tool of the class described comprising a plate having an opening formed therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening in alignment with each other, said plates being flared outwardly at their outer surface at one end, the inner surface of said plates adjacent said end being recessed and having the edges thereof directed inwardly to provide gripping surfaces; a boss formed on the inner surface of each of said plates and having curved surfaces engaging with each other, the movement of said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in one direction effecting a rocking of said pair of plates on said bosses; a cam for moving said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in one direction; and resilient means for locking said pair of plates in the opposite direction upon movement of said opening bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in the opposite direction.
4. A tool of the class described comprising a bearing plate having an opening therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening and having their outer surfaces adjacent one end flared outwardly, the movement of said bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in the direction of said end of said pair of plates eifecting an approach of said pair of plates at said end toward each other.
5. A tool of the class described comprising a hearing plate having an opening therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening and having their outer surfaces adjacent one end flared outwardly, the movement of said bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates in the direction of said end of said pair of plates eflecting an approach of said pair of plates at said end toward each other; and cam means for moving said bearing plate longitudinally of said pair of plates toward said end.
6. A tool of the class described comprising a bearing plate having an opening therein; a pair of plates projected through said opening and having their outer surfaces adjacent one end flared outwardly, the movement of EDGAR NORDSTROM.
