THDOR BABICH, OF EAGLE RIVERi7 WISCONSIN.
GATE.
Application filed October 6,
To all '107mm t may emmer/n:
lc it known that l, Timon Banier-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eagle River, in the county of Vilas and State of iVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gate, the general object of the invention being to provide means for causing the wheels of the vehicle to open the gate, as the vehicle approaches the same and to provide means for closing the gate after the vehicle has passed through the same.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the coii'ibiiiation and airangen'ient of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
. Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a portion of a fence and my improved gate.
Fig. 2 is a side view showing the gate in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 o-f Fig. 2.
Figs. 4f and 5 are detail perspective views of the opposed ends of the tracks.
Fig. 6 is a sectional View on line 6 6 of Fig. Tb is a detail sectional view of the opposed ends of the tiltable platforms showing the bell crank arm in operable position therewith.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the bell crank arms.
In these views 1 indicates portions of the fence on each side of the gate opening and 2 indicates the gate sections which are slidably mounted on the supporting posts 3 by means of the tracks 4L and the rollers 5. A curved arm G engages a bracket 7 on each section and this arm is pivotally mounted at its lower end to one of the posts as shown at 8. Each arm has connected therewith a pinion 9 which engages the teeth of a segmental gear 10 which is also pivoted to one of the posts and which has an arm 11 thereon which is attached to a bell crank 12. A weight 13 is att-ached to the upper end of 1923. Serial No. 666,969.
each belll crank by means of the cable 14 which passes over guiding pulley 15 which is attached to an arm 16 Ona supporting post. rlhis weioht tends to hold the bell crank in raised position with the curved arm 6 in upright rposition so as to hold the gate closed. A pair of tiltable platforms 17 are arranged adjacent the outer edges of the roadway so that theywill be engaged by the wheels of the vehicle and depressed.
These platforms are attached to the bell cranks in such a manner that when they are depressed `the lbell 'cranks' will -be forced downwardly so as to `rock the gears 10 and thus throw the curved arms outwardly by means of the pinions so that the gate sections will be moved to open position. The platforms are made long enough to hold the gate in open position until the .vehicle has passed through andthen when the platy forms are released by the vehicle the weights will return the parts to normal position and thus the gate will be closed. Latch means 18 may be placed on the abutting parts of the gate sections if desire-d so as to prevent the sections from having lateral play. From the foregoing it will be seen that the gate will be opened by the wheels yof the vehicle striking the platforms so that .it is not necessary for an occupant ofthe vehicle to get out to open the gate. The gate willl automatically closeas soon as the vehicle passes through and the gate will be opened bvy a vehicle coming in either direction.
tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
Sii
It is thought 'from the foregoing descrip- I desire it to be understood'that l may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement ofthe several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scopeof the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a pair of slidable gate sections, of rocking members connected tothe gate sections, manipulating arms connected tothe rocking members, pairs of tiltable platforms adjacent the manipulating arms of the rocking members, bell cranks carried between the opposed ends of the tiltable platforms, and elevating means connected to the bell cranks.
2. The combination with a pair of slidable gate sections, of rocking members connected at their freecnds with the gate sec- N tions and havnn the'rgnner ends serrated, mampulatmg arms plvoted below 'the roc lng members 1n mesh wlth the serratlons or the inner ends of the rocking membersnnd having their free endsA extended npp'r'ox mately at right angles thereto, tltable platgrooved7 crank arms sldably seated in the 10 grooves oit the' tltble platforms, pivotal means connecting' the crank arms tothe lna'nlpulatmg arms, and e1evatmg-1neans connected' to 'fthe' free ends of the crank arms.
In testlmony whereof I a'x my .slg-
nature.
