This invention relates to improvementsin combination locks for closure members and the like.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved locking mechanism which embodies certain novel features whereby the' lock may be best used for effectively controlling the operation of a closure member, such as a door.
An 4important object of the` invention is the vprovision of an improved combination lockwhich embodies a plurality of vlocking arrangements, which may be dependently or independently used.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodimentA of this invention, the lettery A generically designates the improved lock unit, which preferably embodies a casing B; sliding block arrangement C; bolt arrangement D; combination locking device for the lblock and'bolt arrangements C and l); manual'operating means F; and combination latch device G.
The improved lock A is, of course, adapted for use in connection with doors or other closure members H. The closure member H is preferably provided with a pocket or opening l5 therein, into which the casing B I lits. Inside and outside cover plates 18 and v19 respectively may be utilized upon the inner and outer surfaces of the closure member H, and the construction of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring-to the casing B, the same is preferably of sheet metal, embodying the substantially rectangular shaped box portionQO, and a closure or cover member 2l; the same providing the chamber 22 within which the details of the improved lock A are supported. If desired, the closure member 21 of the casing B may be detachably clamped to the box portion thereof, as by means of corner bolts or screws 23.
Referring to the sliding block arrangement C, the same is preferably longitudinally slidable with the chamber 22 of casing B, and is provided with slots 24 extending inwardly from the ends thereof adapted for receiving the shanks of the attaching bolts 23. Spiral springs 25 or analogous devices are preferably provided, which are each suitably connected at one end to an end wall 26 of the casing B; said springs 25 having their opposite ends disposed in sockets 28 provided inwardly of an end of the block C, and whereby said block C is resiliently supported in position so that an end 33 thereof is in engagement with an outside end wall 3() of the casing B. rThe block C is preferably provided with a rectangular' shaped pocket 32 extending inwardly from the end 33 thereof, which is adapted for receiving the bolt arrangement D, as will be lsubsequently described. At the other end of the block C, the same is provided with a cylindrical shaped socket or opening 35, which cooperates in receiving certain tuinblers of the combination locking arrangement E, a passageway 36 preferably being provided for establishing communication between the openings 32 and 35, and which receives certain details of the manually operated means F.
Referring to the bolt arrangement D, the same preferably comprises a metal plate or disc 40, which is provided with a locking lug 41 upon an end thereof adapted for slidable extension through an opening 42 provided in the end wall of the casing B, in order to cooperate in a socket (not shown)4 to provide a lock. It is preferred that the plate have a relatively wide and elongated slot 43 extending longitudinally thereof. An arcuate shoulder 45 may be provided at an end of the plate 40 opposite to the bolt lug 41, and an upwardly extend]` ing vlug or projection 46 provided at the end of the slot 43 adjacent the bolt lug 41; the shoulder 45 and the projection 46 being provided for cooperation with the latch device G as will be subsequently described. Flange portions 47 preferably extend from the edge of the bolt plate 40, adapted for receiving suitable pins 48 whereby spiral springs 49 may be mounted upon the same; the function of these spiral springs 49 being that of engaging in sockets 50 of the block member C in order to resiliently support the plate 40, whereby the same is normally urged so that the bolt lug 41 extends outwardly of the casing B, substantially as is illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawings.`
In order that the mechanism of the improved lock A may be controlled from both sides of the closure member H, the manual operating means F is provided, which includes a polygonal shank 51 extending transversely through Athe closure member H and casing B, the ends thereof extending outwardly of the inside and outside cover' plates` 18 and 19 to receive suitable knobs 54 of any approved type. This polygonal shank 51, of course, extends transversely through the passageway 36, and is provided with a sleeve 55 which is fixed thereon, the ends of said sleeves being reduced and bearing in suitable openings provided in the box 20 and cover plate 21 of the casing B, as can readily be seen from Figure 5 of the drawings. This sleeve 55 is cylindrical in formation and is preferably provided with a staple 57 for receiving a link of the flexible chaine-r cable 58 at one end thereof, the other end of said cable or link chain 58 being connected as by a hook 59 to the insidie end of the bolt plate 40 just upwardly of the arcuate shoulder 45. Certain lateral pockets 61 may be provided in the block C communicating with the passageway 36 therein, which will permit of lateral swinging of the cable 58 when the knobs 54 are oscillated', and which will result in operation of the block or bolt arrangements C and D, as will be subsequently mentioned.
Referring to the combination locking mechanism, the same may be of various types. However, a very effective arrangement has been provided for` cooperation with the other details of this invention which specifically embodies a polygonal shaped shaft 65, extending transversely through the casing B and closure member H, which has a hand engaging bell shaped member 66 keyed upon one outwardly extending end thereof, so that said member overlies theoutsidecover plate 18. The opposite end of this shaft may be provided with a plurality of openings 6T, one of which is adapted for receiving a cotter pin or like n'ieinber 68,` whereby the shaft or shank 65 may conform tothe thickness of the closure member H and be retained thereon for rotation or oscillation. A master tumbler 69 may be provided, which includes a sleeve 70 for fixedly receiving the operating shaft 65. This tumbler G9 may have the circular depressions 71 within the upper and lower surfaces thereof providing a web portion 72, and having' an annular series of transversely extending apertures 7 3 therethrough. adapted for selectively receiving' pin` men'ibers (74. These pin members 74- each include heads 75 which extend into the depressions 51. Cooperating tufmblers 76 and 7T are provided for rotation on the sleeve 70 of master tunibler 69, which may embody outwardly ex tending piir arrangements altogether simil-ar to the pins 75,` and which are adapted for cooperation with said pinsfl in effecting' a llO combination. In order thata combination of the tumblers may` be detected by the vsense of feeling, each of the tumblers 76 and v77 are ypreferably provided with outwardly extending toothed wheels 78, integral itherewith, which have flexed fiat spring members 79 cooperating therewith; said spring members 7 9 being preferably connected at one end thereof to the casing B, substantially as is illustrated in Figures 2'and 5 of the drawings. In order to provide a highly satisfactoryv combination, an extra tumbler 80 may be employed, which is preferably disposed adjacent the tumbler 7 6 and provided with a spring member 81 cooperating in a groove 82 thereof, the spring member 81 being preferably mounted wit-hin this groove 82 by means of a pair of pins 83 which maybe adjustably disposed in any of the annular vseriesof openings 84 provided within said recess 82. This springmember 81 is provided for cooperation with an up-y wardly projecting pin (not shown) which may extend from the toothed portion 7 8 of the auxiliary tumbler 76. A toothed wheel portion 86 is formed integral .upwardly on the tumbler 80, similar to the toothed wheel portions 78, and which receives the flexed end of aspring arm 86a thereagainst, said arm 86a being carried uponth'e under surface of the cover 21. All of the tumblers 69, 76, 77 and 80 are provided with shank portions 85, which' may be adjusted tofbey positioned in the passageway r36,`and seg mental head portions 87 which are of such size asto not permit the same to slide in the passageway 36. j
The outer surface of the bell member 66 is preferably provided with an indicating mark 88, such as an arrow, which is raised therefrom, so that a person may readily feel This indicating mark 88 is preferably provided for cooperation with a dial 89 which is struck upon the plate 18 of the improved lockA; the dial .89 profvv viding a plurality of delineations 91, one of which delineations 91a at least, is raised outwardlyr from the plane of the plate 18 for cooperation with the raised indicator mark 88 in determining a combination forproper adjustment of the tumblers of the combination locking mechanism E. In order to de-I termine the vdelineation audibly or by sense of feeling, a toothed Wheel 92 is preferably keyed to the shank within the bell memberG, the teeth of which are adapted for cooperation against a flexing spring 94 which may be keyed at one end to the plate 18, substantially as is illustrated inFigure 1 of the drawings.
Thecombination latch device Gr is of novel formation and is adapted for the most effective control of the lock A under various conditions. This device Gr includes a latch member 100 which is of substantially rectangular formationand pivoted as by a pin 101 to the block C upwardly ofthe slot 43. In fact, a cylindrical' shaped lug 102 is provided about the pivot pin 101, which extends into the slot 43 provided in the bolt plate 40. A pin 104 is reciprocably carried transversely by the free end of the latch member 100, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 13 of the drawings, a flat spring member 105 being connected at one end upon a rib 106 provided upwardly on the latch member 100, the free end of this spring 105 being provided for normally forcing the pin 104 transversely through its opening in the latch member 100 for engaging the plate 40. This pin is provided for cooperation with the upwardly extending annular shoulder 45 and the projecting lug 46, which are provided by the bolt plate 40 and the cooperative function of which parts will be subsequently set forth in describing the operation of this invention. It is desired that an arcuate de pression 108 be provided upwardly in the bottom surface of the latch kmember 100,I
preferably struck concentrically from the pivot pin 101, and adapted for receiving the projecting portion 46 of the bolt arrangementy D inr order to hold the latter in a deinite unlockedl position'with the bolt lug 41 thereof retracted inwardly of the opening 42.
The combination latch device E furthermore includes a shaft 110 extending transversely through the closure memberTI from the inside plate 19. The inside end of this shaft 110 extends into the chamber 22 providedby the casing B` and has a key head 112 fixed ythereon which is provided with a slot 113 extending inwardly from the surface thereof which facesthe latch member 100, and which provides a shoulder 114 adapted for cooperation with an end edge 115 of the latch member 100. This slot 113 is elongated and slidably receives the rib 106 therein. In order toplace the latch member 100 ina determinedposition, the bell shaped` member 100 may assume various positions over the lock plate 40. There are, in fact, four desired vpositions of the latch member 100 which are suitably indicated upon an annular raised position 117 provided upon the outer surface of the cover plate 19, these positions of the latch being indicated upon the portion 117 as by delineations 1183. In
order that the latch 100 may be properly s positioned by sense of feeling alone, a po lygonal shaped nut or extension 118 has been provided, rigidly connected to the shank 110 which cooperates with the flexed end of a spring member l1 19 secured as at 120 to the plate 19.

In operation, when it is desired to use the improved lock mechanism A merely as a latch for the closure member H, which necessitates merely an oscillation of the knob 54 to retract the lock bolt 41, the manually operable bell shaped member 116 of the combination latch device G is operated so that the indicator member 122 thereof designates one of the delineations 118n reading Day, In this position, the latch member 100 will be positioned with the free end thereof extendinglaterally of the latch plate slot 43, substantially as is illustrated in 'Figure 3 of the drawings. lVhen in this position, and upon oscillation of the manually operated means F, the flexible chain member 5S will draw the bolt plate 40 inwardly of the casing B, compressing the springs 49, if the tumblers are disarranged, so that the locking bolt lug 41 may be retracted in order to open the closure member H, as can well be understood.
If it is desired to control operation of the lock A by means of the combination locking mechanism E, the hand engaging dial or member 116 isi thrown until the indicator 122 thereof designates the word Combination. In this position, which is illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings. the latch 100 will have been oscillated so that the pin 104 thereof extends from the lower surface of the latch member 100 and is in engagement with the arcuate shoulder 45 which extends upwardly from the bolt plate 40. In this position, it is easily understood that oscillation of the door knob 54 will of necessity move the lock block G with the movement of the sliding bolt mechanism D in view of the fact that the latch member 100 is directly pivoted to the block C. In this manner, there can be no movement of the bolt plate 40 independent of movementI of the block C. In order to slide the block C, however, it will be necessary for the person upon the outside of the closure member H to set the hand engaging member 66 in designation of the proper combination upon the dial 89, as to arrange the tumblers 69, 76, 77 and 8O so that the shanks thereof will all be aligned for insertion into the passageway o6 of the block C as the latter is moved. 0f course, various combinations can be yeffected by means of which these tumblers can be so A convenient combination has been found to be that of setting the indicator mark 88 so that the same designates the numeral 17 turning the member 66 for a full left hand turn, then reversing movement of the member 66 for a three-quarter turn to the nume-ral 7, and from this position rotate the member 66 for'a one-quarter lefthand turn to the numeral 5. In this manner, the tumble-rs may be positioned so that the shank 85 thereof will be positioned in the path of the slot 36, so that the block C may be moved upon operation of the manual means F, compressing the springs 25. This movement will likewise Withdraw the bolt lug 41 into its opening 42 in the casing l and permitting opening of the closure member H.
If it is desired to set the lock mechanism A against even the combination locking mechanism E, the opera-tor from the inside of the closure member H may adjust the hand engaging member 116 so that the indicator 122 thereof designates' the delineation Night In this position, which is illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, the pin 104 of the latch member 100 will depend from the lower surface of the latch member directly adjacent the projection 46 of the lock plate 40, so that it will be impossible to move the lock plate 40 inwardly of the casing B, without engaging the pin 104. An attempt to move the bolt mechanism D, or the sliding block C inwardly of the casing B, even should the combination of the locking mechanisml E be properly set, will be frustrated in View of the fact that end surface 115 of the latch rib 106 will engage the shoulder 114 provided by the member 112, which is positioned within the casing B for oscillation and rotation solely and cannot slide therein,` As the latch is so arranged, the bolt' lug 41 cannot be withdrawn into the opening 42 of casing B, notwithstanding the fact that the tumblers are properly set for sliding of the block C, and which arrangement of parts is illustrated in Figure 4. If it is the desire of an operator to maintain the lock A inoperative even as to the latch, the latch member 100 may be swung and by drawing the bolt plate inwardly till the lug 41 is within the opening 42 provided therefor, and by swinging the latch memlili) ber 100 until the projection 46 engages iny the arcuate slot 108, it can readily be understood that the bolt device D will be maintained inoperative.
From the foregoing description of this invention it can be seen that an improved lock has been provided, which is relatively simple, compactly arranged, and by means of which a person may readily and effectively control the various combinations thereof by sight, sound or sense of feeling.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of inventionherein shown and described, wit-hout departing from the spirit of the. invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In alock mechanism, the combination of a casing, a block movable within the casing, a combination locking device for said block, a bolt arrangement movable in the casing with respect to said block, means attached to the bolt arrangement for manual operation of the same, and a latch detion within said casing for sliding therein,Y

3. A lockmechanism comprising a casing, a block slidable within said casing, means resiliently maintaining said block in one position within said casing, a combination lock mechanism embodying a plurality of tumblers adapted for cooperation with said block to lock the same in position within saidv casing, a bolt mechanism slidably mounted within ysaid casing, means resiliently maintaining said lbolt mechanism in deiinite relation to said block, a manually operable arrangement carried by said casing and engaging said bolt arrangement for movement ot the same, and' a latch mechanism adapted for cooperation with said block and lock mechanisms in selectively positioningy the same for independent or uniform movements, or against movement within said casing, said combination locking mechanism and latch mechanism embodying dial arrangements positioned upon opposite sides of said casing. y
4. A lock mechanism comprising a casing, a block movable in the casing, a lock for said block, a bolt arrangement carried by the casing in movable relation to the block, and a latch member movably carried by said block and adapted to be positioned to selectivelyv engage the bolt arrangement to vpermit dependent or independent movement of the bolt arrangementl with respect to kthe block.
5. A lock device comprising a casing, a movable bolt provided with a projection extending outwardly7 therefrom, a latch device including an oscillating member, a pin carried thereby, and a spring normally forcing said pin outwardly of said member, said latch device adapted to be selectively positioned to permit movement of the bolty within the casing or to be positioned that the spring will 'orce said pin into the path of the projection on said movable bolt to prevent movement of the latter.
6. A lock mechanism comprising a casing, a block movable with respect to said casing, a lool: device controlling operation of the block within said casing, a bolt arrangement, a latch member oscillatively connected to the block adjacent said bolt arrangement adapted to be positioned to selectively permit dependent or independentv operation of the bolt arrangement with respect to the block, and means for controlling positioning of the latch member cooperating therewith to movably or immovably position the same within the casing.
7. A lock mechanism comprising a casing,y a block movable within the casing, combination lock vmeans for said block, a bolt arrangement movable within the casing and with respect to said block, means tor manual operation of said bolt arrangement, a latch member pivotally connected to said block and including a resiliently supported pin adapted for cooperation with projections extending rom said bolt arrangement to permit dependent o1l independent movement of the bolt arrangement with respect to said block, and means for manual operation of said latch member adapted to be positioned so that said bolt arrangement and block may be maintained in a locked position notwithstanding unlocked positioning of said combination lock tor said block.
