FRED C. BATSCH, 0F NEILLSVILLE, WISCONSIN.
TERMINAL CLAMPS FOR BATTERY POSTS.
To all whom it may concern: z
. Be it known that I, FRED O. RATSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neillsville, in the county of Clark and State of isconsin, have invented certain new in Terminal Clamps for Battery Posts, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a terminal clamp for the posts of batteries that may be applied to and removed from said posts in a simple and expeditious manner.
A further purpose of the invention resides in the provision of such a clamp that is so constructed as to reduce the liability of the clamp from becoming corroded, generally due to a loose connection between the clamp and battery posts. I
A still further purpose of the invention is the provision of such a clamp that is adapted to be employed in conjunction with batteries equipped with varying types of posts, my invention beingcharacterized by its simplicity, durability and efficiency, and one that may be manufactured and'marketed at small cost.
A still further purpose of the invention is to provide such a clamp wherein the same comprises end elements, capable of being disassembled for permitting of the removal of parts in the event of the same becoming broken or otherwise .impaired for eflicient use.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection. with the accompanying drawings, the invention-residing in the construe tion, combination, and as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 'l-is a side elevation of my improved clamp and positioned upon a battery post.
Figure 2-is a detail cross section thereof, and
Figure clamp removed.
Referring to larl'y to Figure 1 5 designates a storage battery, 6 the usual round post, and 7 the terminal wire of the engine ignition system formed with a just described invention, the
arrangement of parts 3' is a bottom plan view of the the drawings, and particu-' Application filed April 28,1923. Serial No. 635,391.
bevelled end 8. The elements are not of the essence of my same bein-g of standard makes, and-being merely shown in the drawing for more adequately disclosing the relationship of my invention thereto.
My device-per se, embodies the provision of an inverted substantially U-shaped bracket member 9, formed upon one on with a projecting conical socket member '10, adapted for receiving the said bevelled end 8 of the terminal wire 7, this wire being soldered or otherwise rigidly secured within. said socket member 10.
The longitudinal wall of the bracket member 9 is provided centrally upon its under surface, and at one end-th'ereof, with a round-shaped socket 11, within which is engaged the projecting pin 12 formed upon the upper end of a removable plate 13, which has one face formed'with a depression 13 for receiving a. projection 9 formed upon the adjacent face of this end of the bracket for consequently preventing the disengagement of this plate, should the clamp ever become loose. The front face of this plate 13 is arcuately shaped as at 14:, for permitting said plate to have close contact with the battery post 6, when the current is supplied thereto. 7
Extending through a screw threaded. opening within the opposite end of. the bracket 9 is a bolt 15 having swivelly disposed upon the inner end thereof a head 16, adapted for \vedging engagement with the battery post 6 when the said bolt 16 is turned in one direction, it being of course understood that the end of this bolt outwardly of said bracket 9' is provided with a ,thumb wheel 17, for this purpose.
In view of the above description, it will at once be apparent that when the removable plate 13 is positioned within the bracket 9, and the head 16 moved in a direction away from this plate, the clamp may be readily positioned upon the battery post 6, and upon a turning movement of the bolt 15, through the medium of the thumb wheel 17 in a forward direction, this head is moved into engagement with the post. for consequently securely binding the clamp thereon. Should the plate 13 become corroded, at any time, the clamp may be removed, and the plate 13 cleaned or renewed.
It is believed by me that it will at once be apparent tothose skilled in the art that I have provided a highly improved type of terminal clamp for battery posts, and one that will accomplish all of the functions above ascribed and even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A terminal clamp for battery posts comprising a substantially U-shaped bracket, a clamping screw threaded through one side portion of the bracket, the bracket being provided at its inner surface and opposite the said screw with an inwardly disposed hump, the bracket being provided at the inner surface of its intermediate portion and in the vicinity of that side thereof provided with the hump with a recess, a block having a vrecess adapted to fitover the hump and provided with a lug adapted to enter the first mentioned recess, that face of the block which is opposite the screw being conceived and means for connecting-a conductor with the bracket at that side portion thereof upon which the hump is provided.
I In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
FRED C. RATSCH.
