Aswill be seen by neference to,rFigure 1, the mandrel is composed of two parts, a solid cylindricat basel portion 1.0 and, a hollow tapered body portion 11 which terminatos4 in the solid tip-portion 12. The bottom surface 26 of the slot is parallel to the axis of the mandrel. A small rod 2O is rotatively mounted in the supportw .ing pipe shaft 16 and extends longitudinally of the mandrel and at its inner end 22 is rotatively mounted in a cylindrical bearing socket 23 in the solid tip portion. A clamp'- ing member for engaging the edge of a sheet blank of paper inserted in this slot is mounted longitudinally on this rod 20 and cooperates with the edge of the slot for clamping the edge in place during winding. In the particular yform of the invention shown this clamping member 24; consists of a thin plate with one edge secured ina longitudinal groove 25 in the rod 20. The outer edge 27 of the clamping plate 24 has the same taper as the mandrel and is in the lines of the cone constituting the mandrels outer surface so that its outer thin edge may move in a rotary direction toward and against the sides of the slot so as to clamp the sheet of paper between it and the side of the slot at the outer margin of the mandrel. It will be noted that since the surface 26 parallel to the axis of the mandrel and the body portion is hollow, the straight edge of a blank may enter the slot for its full length up to the point 19 with its inner edge parallel all the waywith the axis of the mandrel. Since the edge portion within the slot varies in width at substantially the same rate as the mandrel varies in diameter, when the winding is finished and this portion withdrawn from the slot, its longitudinal edge when folded against the paper cone will be substantially in a plane longitudinally of the axis of the cone. The mandrel itself is rotated by any suitable means well known in the art, the gear 28 being shown to illustrate this broadly. The rod 20 carrying the clamping plate 24 is of Course rotated independently of the mandrel by suitable means through gear 29. It will be noted that particular means for mounting and operating the mandrel and the clamping rod constitute no part of the present invention and that it is not necessary that the mandrel shall be hollow in order that the edge o-fthe paper may enter the slot or groove in parallel relation with the axis of the mandrel.
In operating the mandrel to wind a cone a segmental blank of paper 30, indicated in part in dotted lines in Figure 1, is so moved that one of its straight edge portions will A Slight 24 in a rotary direction will cause it toA cooperate with the edge of the slot to clamp the entering edge of the sheet blank thus securely holding it. The mandrel and the rod 20 are then rotated together for several turns to wind the cone. The outer curved margin of the blank may be on suoli radii of curvature or so related to the straight edge in the slot, that it will extend longitudinally of the mandrel slightly beyond the end 19 of the slot at each revolution or in each layer after the first and thus the end of the cone may be severed on the mandrel in a plane at right angles to its axis close` to the end 19 of the slot. Since the tip end of the blank extends beyond the end .18 of the slot it may, of course, be severed in the same way on a transverse plane beyond that end. The inner straight edge of the blank in the finished cone thus extends entirely to the tip end and substantially to the other end and in a longitudinal plane passing through the axis of the cone. i y
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein en tering said mandrel near its tip end at an angle to the surface of said mandrel and terminating near the larger end of the mandrel whereby the straight edge portion of a paper blank may be moved into it longitudinally from the end near the tip tor the other end and relatively movable means in said slot i for detach-ably engaging and holding said edge during winding.
2. A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein entering said mandrel near its tip end at a slight-'angle to the surface of said mandrel and' terminating near the larger end of the mandrel whereby the straight edge portion of a paper blank may be moved into it longitudinally from the end near the tip to the other end and movable means in said slot cooperating with one edge thereof for detachably engaging and holding said edge of said blank during winding.
A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein entering said mandrel near its tip end at a slight angle to the surface of said mandrel and terminating near the larger end of the mandrel whereby the stra-ight edge portion of a paper blank may be moved into it longitudinally from the end near the tip to the other end, a movable clamping member in said slot having a straight narrow outer edge `on substantially the same circular transverse lines as the adjacent portions of the mandrel extending from approximately the end of the slot near the base of the mandrel to a point amaterial distance from the end near the tip and means for so operating llO said member as to cause its outer edge to move into or out of lateral contact with an edge of said slot.

5. A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein entering said mandrel near its tip end at aV slight angle to the surface of said mandrel and terminating near the larger end, a rod rotatively mounted cent-rally of said mandrel and projecting from its basefor operation, and a clamping member mounted on said rod having an outer straight edge in but of less width than said slot from its end next to the base to a point near the other end, the said outer edge having t-he same longitudinal taper as the adjacent sides of the slot whereby it will cooperate with one side of said slot in clamping the edge of a paper blank.
6. A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein entering said mandrel near its tip end at a slight angle to the surface of said mandrel and terminating' near the larger end, a rod rotatively mounted centrally of said mandrel and `projecting from its base for operation, a clamping member in the form of a thin flat sheet rigidly connected at its inner edge longitudinally to said rod and extending therefrom radially With its outer tip end and terminating at a point near its -L'- base end, a supporting tube centrally arranged in the base portion and projecting there-from, a rotary rod in said tube projecting beyond its ends its inner end being in a bearing socket in the tip portion, a clamping member in the form of a thin' flat sheet 'with its inner edge secured in a longitudinal slot in said rod extending therefrom radially with its outer edge between the sides of said slot at the outer margin of the mandrel from substantially the end of the slot at the base of the mandrel to a point near the other end of the slot.
8. A. conical mandrel for winding paper concs having a longitudinal slot therein between but spaced from its ends adapted to receive therein the straight edge portion of a paper blank the Width of said edge portion in the slot varying longitudinally in correspondenre with the varying radii of the adjacent portions of the mandrel and relatively movable means in said slot cooper-ating with one side wall thereof for detachably engaging and holding said edge portion dur-ing winding.
9. A conical mandrel for winding paper cones having a longitudinal slot therein entering said mandrel near its tip end in a plane parallel to its axis and terminating near the larger end of the mandrel whereby the edge portion of a paper blank may be inserted with its edge substantially parallel to the axis of the mandrel and relatively movable means in said slot for detachably engaging and holding said edge during winding.
