Description

"Mar, 3. 1925.
1,528,237 F. S. ARNOLD CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Feb. ll, 1921 Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. ARNOLD, OF DES MOINES, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO R. N. TAYLOR, OF GRIMES,
I IOWA.
CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application inea February 11, 1921. serial No. 444,129.
T0-@ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK S. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Gigarette Holder, of which the following is a specification.
lheV object of this invention is to provide improved means for straining or filtering the products of combustion drawn from burning tobacco.
further object of this invention is to provide improved means for ceaning a tof 'bucco pipe or cigarette holder.
A further object of this invention .is to provide means for applying a medicament or washing element to the stem of a tobaccohurning article for the purpose of modifying the products of combustion drawn through said stem.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for the stem of a tobacco-burning article such as a tobacco pipe, cigar or cigarette holder.
My invention consists in the construction,
arrangement' and combination of elements i hereinafter set forth, pointed outl in my claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the complete device on an enlarged scale. Figure 2 is a cross-sectiom on the indicated line 2-2 of Figure -1 and Figure is a cross-section on the indicated hne 3 3 of Fi re l. I
his invention is equally applicable to a tobacco pipe, cigar or cigarette holder and, for convenience, it is herein illustrated and described in connection with the latter named device. i v l In the construction of the device as shown 'the numeral 10 designates a stem having a mouth piece or preferably taperin" throughout its length as shown. A cylindrical bore 12 is formed in and extends throughout the major portion of the length of the stem 10 and a smoke duct 13 is formed in the mouth piece or bit portion of the stem and extends entirely throughout the length thereof. The smoke duct 13 is of materially less diameter than the bore 12, is centrall located in the mouth piece and extends rom the inner end of the bore through said mouth piece. The outer end portion of the stem is internally bit 11 at one end, said stem.
threaded and a holder member 14 is formed with a reduced neck portion 15 which is eX- ternally #threaded and adapted to be screwed therein. The holder 14 preferably is of substantially the same diameter as the outer end portion of the stem and is formed with a socket 16 centrally and longitudinally thereof and opening to its outer end, which socket preferably is cylindrical and is adapted to receive and hold one end portion of a cigarette, not shown. A smoke duct 17 is formed centrally of the holder'ldf and neck 15 and affords communication between the socket 16 and 'bore 12. A rod 18 is mounted in the bore 12 and projects therefrom and said rod is formed with a loop or retaining device 19 on its inner end and a laterally extending lug 20 on its outer end. An absorbent su'bstance such as a sponge 21 is mounted on the rod 18 and substantially yet loosely fills the bore12, the retaining device or loop 19 serving to connect said substance to the rod to facilitate inserting and withdrawing the same relative to the bore. A socket 22, Figure 2, preferably angular in cross-section, is formed in the neck 15 and holder 14 substantially parallel with and adjacent to the smoke duct 17 and in the holder and open into the inner end portion of said socket. The socket 22 has one transverse dimension' substantially equal to the length of the lug 20 and another transverse dimension substantially equal to the diameter of the rod the end portion of the rod bearing said lug may be moved longitudinally in the socket. The notches 23, 24 are substantially onequarter each of an imaginary cylinder having a radius substantially equal to the length of the lug 20 in order that either of said notches may receive the lug, in a rotation of `the lholder relative to the rod 18, and prevent withdrawal of the rod from said holder. A port 25 is formed in .and radially of the stem-10 and intersects the bore 1.2 substantially at the center thereof. valve 26 is pivoted on a pin 27 seated in the stem 10 and is adapted for manual rotation on said pin to open or close the port 25 selectively.
In practical use the rod 18 with the substance 21 thereon is mounted in the bore 12 and then the holder` '14 is applied-to the stem, said holder receiving the lug-carrying 18 in order that and longitudinally end of the rod by movementlongitudinally thereof. Then the holder 14: is screwed into the stem 10 and during such operation is turned relative to the rod in such manner that the lug 20 is received in the notch 24 and said holder rotates the rod and to some extent the substance 21 thereon Within the`bore 12. The valve 26 is turned aside from the port 25 and a medicament is injected through said port to the substance 21. The medicament is received in and suspended by the sponge or similar substance 21 and may be used tothe extent of saturating said substance. Then the valve 26 is closed over the port 25 and remains in such position until again moved by resilience of the valve. Draft through the duct 17, bore 12 and duct 13 from a cigarette in the socket 16 draws the products of combustion ot' said cigarette through the medicated substance 2l and during such operation the products ot' combustion are washed, tiltered and purified by the sponge and medicament carried thereby. The holder 14 may be unscreWed from the stem 10 and removed with or Without removing the rod 18 and sponge 21 by manipulation of the holder relative to the lug-carrying end 4of the rod. Because of this the holder may be employed to withdraw the rod and sponge trom the bore of the stem by so manipulating the holder'that the lug 20 is received in the notch 23. Thus the sponge serves as a means for cleaning the bore 12.
1 do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the construction and specific use above pointed out since it is obvious that the construction and use may be modied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention- A cigarette holder, comprising a stem formed with a bore having an enlarged diameter throughout a portion of its length, a holder section removably and replaceably secured to said stem, said holder section being `formed with a socket opening to one end thereof and adapted to receive one end ot' and support a cigarette, said holder section also being formed with a minute bore communicating between said socket and the enlarged portion of the bore of the stem, said holder section also being formed with a socket parallel With the minute bore therein and opening to and communicating with the enlarged portion of the bore of the stem, said holder section also being formed with lateral notches opening to the latter socket, and a rod adapted to be mounted in the latter socket, said rod being formed with a lateral lug on one end, the lug-bearing end ot' the rod being adapted to traverse the latter socket and engage in either of said notches, said rod being adapted to eX- tend Within the enlarged portion of the bore of the stem and also adapted to carry absorbent material substantially filling said enlarged portion of the lbore of the stem.
Signed at Des Moines, in the county 'of Polk and State of Iowa, this 3d day of January, 1921.
FRANK s. ARNOLD.
