The unitary structure of the cap 6 and spacing member 12 assists in the proper positioning of said cap during the moldingoperation, and also provldes a button fastening andspacing device consisting of but two separate parts.
Fig. 3 illustrates an arrangement in which the spacing member 12 is separate from the cap 6, but is provided at one end with an outwardly extending annular flange 16 which is embedded in the material forming the button to thereby rigidly hold said spacing member in position. The reduced portion of the spacing member in this case extends outwardly to a point flush with the contour of the button.
In Fig. A a passage 17 through the material of the button registers with the opening 1A in the cap 6 and at the outer end of said passage is a countersunk portion 18 adapted to receive the annular flange 19 of the spacing member 12, the structure being otherwise like that shown in the preceding figures.
In attaching a button the rivet is passed through the fabric and into the spacing member and button as illustrated in the several figures, after which the rivet is forced or driven toclench the same within the embedded clenching cap 6 to thereby clamp the fabric between the head 9 of the rivet and the annular flange of the spacing member and thus hold the button in properly spaced relation with respect to the fabric, while employing a spacing member of relatively small diameter having a large area of clamping contact with the fabric.
It will of course be understood that a spacing member of greater or less diameter than that shown may be employed and that the length of the spacing member may be altered as desired.
It will also be apparent that the present invention may be applied to various articles whichit is desired to attach to and space from materials or fabrics.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a molded composition article having a recess therein, a headed fastening member to extend through the material to which the article is to be attached and into said recess for clenching engagement therewith, a substantially cylindrical metallic member of relatively small diameter extending from said recess and having an annular flange of relatively large diameter adapted for engagement with said material to thereby space said article from said material.
2. A device of the character set forth comprising a molded composition article having a clenching cap embedded therein and a passage leading to said cap, a metallic spacing member registering with said passage and extending outwardly therefrom, a flange at the outer end of said spacing member, a fastening member adapted to pass through a material and into clenching engagement with said cap and a head on said member adapted to clamp said material against said flange.

4:. A button attaching and spacing device comprising in combination, a molded composition button having a clenching cap molded therein, a tubular metallic spacing member abutting said cap and extending outwardly from said button, the passage through said spacing member co-operating with the open end of said cap toguide and steady a rivet while being driven into clenching engagement with said cap, and an annular flange at the outer end of said spacing member between which and the head of said rivet a fabric is adapted to be clamped.
5. In combination, a molded composition button having a tubular metallic spacing member embedded therein and extending therefrom, a flange at the outer end of said member, rivet clenching means at the inner end of said member, and a headed rivet the shank of which is adapted for clenching engagement with said last mentioned means.
