'BOOK COVER.
Application filed March 12, 1923. Serial No. 624,328.v
To all whom t may conce/m:
Be it known that we, MICHAEL F. SHERI- DAN and PATRICK F. BAILEY, citizens of the United States of America and residents, respectively, of the city of luffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, and city of Olean, county of Cattaraugus, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v
Our invention relates generally; to book -covers, and more particularly to auxiliary or adjustable paper covers, designed to be placed over the binding or cover of a book either temporarily or permanently.
It is well known to those skilled in the art that a present day cover of this nature, when applied to a book, conceals the title of the book, which is often overcome in temporary covers by the provision of an opening in the paper forming the cover;v Sometimes, such temporary covers are provided with printed titles instead of an opening, and such a cover not only requires the additional printing, but it cannot be used on any other book than the one on which it is supplied. These forms are, however, intended only as temporary wrappings to protect the covers of books, and are not suitable for permanent use.-
It has been an object of our invention to provide an adjustable book cover with a transparent portion which will lie opposite any printed matter on the back of the book being covered.
kAnother obj ect has been to provide a multi-section cover which shall fit books of various sizes, and in which there shall be provided means for exposing a portion of the back of the book at any desired point.
Another object has been to provide a dura ble cover of this kind, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, easy to attach to a book, and neat and attractive in appearance.
The above objects and advantages have been accomplished by the device: shown inV the accompanying drawings, of which: p
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our coinplete cover assembled on a book.
Fig. 2 shows the transparent section ofA our cover.
Fig. 3 shows the perforated section thereof.
Fig. 4f shows an assembled view of a cover in which two transparent sections, and two Aof books of different sizes.
' perforated sections are used, whereby two portions of the back of the book are exposed.
Qur invention comprises preferably four members 5, 6, 7, and 8. In Fig. 4, the niemheis corresponding to members 7 and 8 are designated as members 9 and 10, respectively. l The opaque members 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 1 are used when only the title or printing appearing at either the top or bottom of the book are to beexposed. l/Vhen the user desires to expose the printing at boththe top and bottom of the edge of the book, then either two pairs of` members 5 and 6 are used, or a pair of members 9 and 10 are used with a pair of members 5 and 6. The members 9 and 10 are, therefore, exactly like the members and 5, respectively, exs cept that they are reversed.
Each of the members of our Cover is provided at one of its corners with folded portions 11, thus forming a-pocket into which thecorner of the books cover is slipped. Each of the members 6 and 10 is provided at its lateral edge 12, which is opposite the be so arranged that it will always be disposed over the printed matterl ofthe book to which it is applied. This transparent portion 13 is provided with giunmed edges 14,
whereby it may be attached to the under part of the corresponding cover member 5.
Each of the members 5 and 9 has aV detachable portion 15 which is provided over its entire surface with a plurality of sections 16 formed by a plurality of intersect- .ing lines 17, which are made by scoring perforating, or otherwisepartially cutting the material so that any desired vnumber of sections may be removed by tearing alongV the lines bounding the sections. This detachable portion 15 is sufhciently wide so as to make it possible to use one size cover on a number These members 5 and 9 are provided with gummed edges 18 for securing this' part of the book cover to the yadjacent and corresponding parts.
When the book, shown in Fig. 1 is to be covered by our device, the member 5 is placed,'for instance, over the book cover so f that its corner will snugly fit into the pocket of the member formed by the folded poriio tivo pairs of members o tions 11. So much of the back of the book, as it is desired to expose is then determined and sections 16, lying over the area to be exposed, are torn out along` the lines 17. After the opening has been provided, the member 6 is placed in position on the book, and the transparent portion 13 placed over the back or the book, thus covering the part or the back or' the book, which it is desired to expose. rlhe detachable portion 15 o'li the member 5 is then brought over on top of the transparent portion 13 and these tivo parts are secured together by moistening the gummedi edges 14: and 18. Tivo opaque members 7 and 8 are noiv placed upon 'the lower corners of Kthe front and back covers of the book and their lateral ends secured together in the same manner as the ends oi the members 5 and 6. The members 5 and 6 are then attached to the members 7 and 8, respectively, by means ot the gummed edges 19 Yformed along the lower edge oi' each ot the members 5 and 6, whereupon our cover is completed.
When it is desired to expose tivo portions of the rear edge ot the book, either and 6 may be used, or one pair ot members 5 and 6 and a pair of members 9 and 10 may be used.
lt desired the lines 17 may be extended to the lower edge of each member 5 and 9, whereby enoughof the sections 16 may be removed so as to expose the entire rear edge ot' the book. llnstead oft' providing a separate piece of transparent material 13 attached to the member, the end portion of the member itself may be made transparent and thus accomplish the same result. 0bviously, these as Well as other modifications of the details herein shown and described may be made Without departing from the spirit or our invention, or the scope of the appended claims, the form described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim is:
1. A multi-section book cover comprising a mem-ber having a detachable, scored section, and a cooperating member provided with transparent material arranged to overlap the scored section of the first mentioned member.
2. A multi-section book cover comprising` a member having a detachable section termed With a plurality or intersecting, scored lines, and a member provided with transparent material arranged to overlap the detachable section oi Ythe first mentioned member.
ln testimony whereof, We have hereunto signed our names.
MCHAEL F. SHERIDAN. PATRICK F. BAILEY.
