Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAMILTON C. GARWOOD, OI JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTOM PLATES FOR RANGE-CHIMNEVS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 152,796, dated July 7, 1874; application filed May 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON O. GARWOOD, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Bottom Plate for Range-Chimneys,
of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a bottom plate for ran ge-chimneys having a conical or pyramidal elevation in the middle portion, with an opening and valve at the top, and above the top a pipe or flue for carrying off the odors, smoke, 860., from the range when cooking, and for ventilating the room; and it consists of the following -described improvements, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which the plate and flue are represented in two sectional elevations.
A represents the elevated portion of the plate, with an opening, 0, at the top, and a valve, D, to open and close said opening, as required, for allowing a draft through it when required for carrying off the odors and smoke, &c., and stopping the draft, when needful for the benefit of the draft through the fire. E is the pipe or fine on the top of the plate, for conducting the odors, &c., upward in the chimney, which, in the practical application of the apparatus, I will extend to the top of the chimney, or above it, when required, and apply a cowl or other contrivance for increasin g the draft for the better ventilation of the room, and to produce the necessary draft without materially diminishing the draft through the fire, thus enabling me to keep the valve D open at all times, if need be, without detriment to the fire. F is an opening through the pipe E at the base, behind the valve D, for the escape of the matters that may fall on it while closed, the said matters being caused to slide down from the top of the valve through the opening when it is lifted up for opening the passage 0.
To operate this valve I now propose to have a rod, Gr, connected to it at the under side by an eycbolt, H, or any suitable means, and ex tending down inside of the plate through a guide, I, at one side of the chimney-space, where it can be conveniently reached by hand for working it, with a staple, J, for engaging the eye K for holding the valve open.
This arrangement avoids making a hole or slot through the chimney for the rod, as before.
L represents a pan set under the pipe for catching the matters falling from it when the valve is open, to prevent them from falling on the stove and in the cooking-vessels. It is supported in a frame, M, which is detachably connected to the plate by a hook, N, to allow it to be taken down from time to time for emptying out the contents, and it is perforated to avoid obstructing the draft. plate projecting from the front edge of the base B of the bottom-plate. It is designed to extend beyond the wall and downward, so as to extend the draft into the room beyond the front wall and catch the odors that might otherwise escape under theedge of the fireplace. It is connected to the base B, so as to turn up against the Wall out of the way, when required, and has end pieces P connected to it, so as to swing down and form extensions of it to the chimney-wall. These pieces swing over to the front of the plate 0, preparatory to swinging it up against the wall of the fireplace.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. In combination with the range-chimney, bottom-plate A, and smoke-pipe E, the valve .D, located in proper relation to an opening, F,
in the pipe E, and having a downwardly-extending rod, G, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, with a pyramidal or conical chimney bottom-plate, having an open ing in the top, of the extension 0 in frontof the upper portion of the fireplace, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the jointed end pieces P with the extension-plate O and a bottom plateof a range-chimney, constructed as described.
HAMILTON O. GARWOOD.
