ARTICLE SUPPORT.
Application filed May 17,
vention, such as will enable others skilled in I the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for one object to provide a simple and compact device which may be advantageously used for holding a reference book, such as a telephone directory, and a note pad, provision being made whereby a part of the device which normally holds the pad in place, may be moved to a position in which it forms a rest for the pad, while writing upon the latter, and also permits easy access to the directory or other reference book.
A further object is tovprovide a novel mounting means for an article support which will normally permit disposition of said support adjacent a wall, but will dispose said support in an inclined position away from the wall when desired.
A still further object is to make provision whereby the device may be converted for use as a shaving cabinet or to hold any desired toilet articles. I
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the invention in different positions.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device in the position disclosed in Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation showing the device moved into compact relation with a wall or other support.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a vertical backplate which is designed primarily to be supported against a wall, for which purpose lt may well be provided with openings 2 for the reception of nails or screws 3. Opposite vertical edges of the plate 1 are provided with vertically elongated forwardly extending flanges 4 and a wider horizontal 1923. Serial N0. 639,645.
flange 5 extends from the plate 1 between the lower ends of the flanges 4;, the front edge portion of the flange 5 being preferably arched transversely to some extent as indicated at .6, for a purpose to appear.
Upper and lower normally upright links 7 and 8 have their lower ends pivoted at 9 to the flanges 4, while I have shown the upper ends of said links similarly connected at 10 to ears 11 which extend rearwardly from an article-supportinocasing 12. This easing normally stands upright atthe front edges of the flanges 4 and co-onerates with these flanges, with the flange 5 and withthc back-plate 1, in forming a receptacle for a note pad or tablet 13. It will be seen by comparing the several views however, that when the casing 12 is moved forwardly and downwardly, it is disposed at an inclined position, in which position, it will effectively serve as a rest for the pad 13, while writing upon the latter. To prevent this pad from falling out of place when the casing 12 is moved forwardly, in case the use of said pad is not needed, a bar or strap 14: may extend between the flanges 4: as shownin Fig. ,3.
Movement of the casing 12 to an inclined position, such as that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is due to the fact that the distance between the pivots 9 is greater than the distance between the pivots 10 and in the present disclosure, the upper links 7 are shorter than the lower links 8. The arrangement is such however that when the casing 12 is moved to its retracted position, as seen in Fig. 4:, it will be vertically disposed in front of the flanges 4.
The casing 12 is preferably formed of front and rear sections 15 and 16 hinged together at 17 and when this casing is intended to contain a reference book of any character, metal strips 18 are positioned vertically in the two sections and are anchored at their ends, so that the back and front of the book may be inserted under these strips, thus opening the book for reference when the front section 15 of the casing is opened. These strips also serve to prevent the book from accidentally falling from the casing when the latter is open.
When the device is used as a telephone directory holder, it is desirable to have a list of important phone numbers displayed at the front of the casing 12. For holding such a list, I have shown a frame 19 carried by the front casing section 15, the upper end of this frame being opeir so that thehst and a glass or celluloid cover therefor edto extend transversely across the open side of'the casing section. 16 and 'it is provided with a plurality of rearwardly extending partitionsQl which" divide thespace behind it into a plurality of article-holding compartments. The ends of the late 20 are bent inwardly and shaped to form hooks 22 to engage suitable tra'clrs'or the'like23 in the baclr'casing section. Thus, while the plate 20 is held in place, it maybe easily removed if desired and'inay also be adjusted or moved up or down to different positions"- in the casing. The spring action of the platemcausing a suiiiciently tight frictional engagement of the hooks with the t'racksto hold the plate initsadjusted positions.
By employing the construction-shown-and described or a substantial equival'entthere of, a device is provided which'wil-l be very desirable for a IlUIDbBI'O'fpLUPOSGS and asexcellent resultshave' been obtained fronr the details disclosed-f these details may be followed if desired; However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes-may be made.
I claim: w a H v 1. A device o f the class described comprising a back plate having a pairof spaced vertical flanges on its front side, and a hori- 40 zontal ledge between the lowerends of said flanges, a'su' po'r'tf normally disposed vertically; at; the front of said flanges and cooperating with said flanges and ledge in formingra 'compartment for normally hold ing a writing pad, and connecting means between said flanges and said support I permitting' the latter to be moved-man opera tive position.
EL -A device of theclassdescribed comprising a 'baclrplate having a' pa-i 1- of spaced vertical flangesextending: from its frontside, and a- -h orizontal' ledge between the lower ends of said fian'gesan'd extending beyond the' 'o-ut-er edges thereof, a support normally disposed vertically and resting upon sa d ledge at the front edges of said flanges and co-operating with said flanges and led-ge"in'-'form'ing a compartment for normally holding a writing pad, -and oon meeting means between said flanges and said support permitting: the support to be=swung downwardly and outwardly'to an operative position.
3. -A- structure as specified in claim 2;
said ledgebeing formed by a resilient flange noi-l'n'a-lly' engagingzthe:support to hold the latter adjacent said flanges.
In testimony whereof- I have hereunto affixed my signature.
