Description
E. B. STIMPsoN.
Seam-Rubbers for Boots and Shoes. 510.1521704, i Patenteld`lune3r1874.
l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN B. STIMPSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAM-RUBBERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,704, dated June 30, 1874; application tiled June 8, 1874.
.To all whom fit may conc-em:
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. STIMrsoN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Seam-Rub ber for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates to an improved device for rubbing the seams ot' boots and shoes and other articles of leather in order to smooth the material at the joint where two pieces are sewed together. The invention consists in the combination of a supporting-standard, a rest for holding the work, and a plunger working in a pivoted box or bearing to allow it to oscillate, said plunger having a rubber or burnisher on its lower end, and being provided with a spring or weight to hold it in cont-act with the work.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.
A represents the base or platform, to which is attached the lower end of a standard, B, which extends upward and forward, and has formed in its upper portion a slot or elongated eye, in which a cylindrical boX, C, is pivoted by means of gudgeons d d, so as to allow it to oscillate. The box C forms a bearing for a rod or plunger, E, on the lower end of which is a rubber, f, which may be in one piece with the plunger, or attached thereto. The rest for the work consists of a plate or bar, G, corresponding in form with the seam to be placed thereon. This plate or bar G has a shank, g,
B, and held in place by a setscrew or pin, or other suitable means.
By this construction the rest G may be readily reversed in position or removed and replaced by another of ditl'erent form. The rod or plunger E is provided with a spring, H, working between the handle e and the upper end of the standard B, for the purpose of holding the rubber in contact with the work. In lieu ofthe spring, or in addition thereto, it' desired, the plunger may be provided with a weight, J, at its upper end. On the standard B, near the point of attachment of the rest G, is a shoulder or abutment, K, for the purpose ot holding the rubber when not in contact with the rest Gr. A cup or bowl, M, is attached to the standard or base to hold water for moistenin g the work.
In using this invention the work is placed upon the rest G with the sea-n1 uppermost, and the seam is rubbed in the usual manner by grasping the handle o and moving the rubber f backward and forward over the work.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standard B, the rest G, and the plunger E, revolving in a sleeve pivoted within and to the slotted end of the standard, provided with the rubber j', and furnished with a spring or weight, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
EDWIN B. STIMPSON.
