M. T. GAUT ATTACHMENT FOR TABLES Filed May 2, 1923 gvvua'rfloz MarguerifeTGaut Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES HARGUERITE '1. GA'lJT, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE,
ATTACHMENT" non TABLES.
Application filed May 2, 1923. Serial No. 636,188.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, hIARGUERITl-l T. GAtT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an improved attachment for card tables which may also be utilized in other places such as the arms of chairs in restaurants, tables in hospitals. etc. It is an object of the invention to provide a convenient support for tumblers containing beverages, for matches, cigars or cigarettes and ashes therefrom, all of which shall be out of the way so as not to interfere with the proper use of the table. Hitherto it has been customary eitherto set ash trays on the table where they are in the way of the players or at more or less inconvenient places at a distance from the table. By the use of my device all such articles can be supported in a convenient position for use yet without interfering with the play.
Referring to the drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my device in 30 position for use, and i Figure 2 a vertical section taken approximately through the center of the device.
Figure 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2. p
In the drawings reference character indicatesa table which may be. of any ordinary or desirable construction. The attachment which is the subject of my invention may be secured in any desirable position to the table top but preferably at the corner so as to be as muchas possible out of the way J of persons seated at the table. The attachment comprises a pair of trays 11 and 12 united by a cross bar 13 having at its undersidea boss 14 in which is rotatably mounted the enlarged upper end of a screw 15 having threaded engagement with a clamping member comprismg upper and lower arms 16 and 17 united by an intermediate member 18. The lower end of the screw is provided with a flat head 19 which when turned serves to move the clamping member up and down. a The forward end of the part 16 is provided with an enlargement 20 which preferably is faced with a rubber pad to cause it to grip the table strongly and to prevent marring of the surface of the table.
The member 18 is located between the trays in one direction and in the other direction it is located between the screw 1.) and a match box holder having sides 21 and 22 preferably consisting of a single piece of metal twice bent at right angles at the bottom while a bent strip of sheet metal :23 is secured to the bottom and extends upwardly therefrom to cause a match box to project from the top of the holder all as is usual in such devices. The sides 21 and 22 of the match holder are secured at their edges to the trays 11 and 12 and serve in conjunction with the bar 13 to firmly unite the trays and to hold them in proper spaced relation. A cup 24 may 'be placed in either one of the trays or in both. This cup has a partition 25 dividing the same into two comparb ments, one of which may be used for holding cigars or cigarettes and the other may receive the ashes. A bent metal holder 26 of ordinary form is secured to the cup at one, side for holding a cigar or cigarette.
In some cases I may change the form of the trays by making them in the form of a flfllstum of a cone to receive conical drinking glasses of paper or the. like such as commonly used in drug stores and many other changes may be made. in minor details as will be obvious to those skilled in the art. For this reason I do not limit myself to the specific form of the invention shown in the drawin and described in the specification but on y as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
- 1. An attachment for card tables and the like comprising a pair of trays, a cross-piece at the upper level thereof securing them together, and a clamp carried by the crosspiece and adapted to engage a corner of the table top whereby the trays will project at different sides of the table, substantially as set-forth. I 2. An attachment for card tables and the like comprising a pair of trays, a cross-piece at the upper level thereof securing them together, a clamp carried by the cross-piece and adapted to engage a corner of the table top whereby the trays will project at different sides of the table, and a brace spaced from said cross-piece and also secured to both the trays, substantially as set forth.
3. An attachment for card tables and the like comprising a pair of trays, a cross bar connecting the trays, a brace supporting said trays, a clamp having a part engaging said cross bar underneath a corner of the table, and another part extending up between the cross bar and a brace and over the top of the table, substantally as set forth.
4. An attachment for card tables and the like comprising a pair of trays, a cross bar connecting the trays, a brace supporting said trays, and a clamp having a part extending upward between the brace and the table engaging the upper surface of the table top for securing the attachment in place, substantially as set forth.
5. An attachment for card tables and the like comprising a pair of receptacles adapted to be secured to a card table at opposite sides of a corner thereof and below the level of the top of the table, a clamp between the receptacles adapted to engage the corner of the table, and a brace located outwardly from the clamp and partially concealing the same, substantially as set forth.
6. A11 attachment for tables comprising a pair of spaced trays, a connecting element secured adjacent their upper edges, means for clamping said connecting element to a table top, and a brace for said trays spaced from said connecting element said brace comprising a bar of metal having its sides extending in substantially parallel relation to form a holder for a match box said brace having its-contiguous edges secured to said trays, substantially as set forth.
In Witnesswhereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee, this 25th day of April, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-three.
