To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I REINHARD E. BIER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of N0. 189 Vandeventer Avenue,
Astoria, Long Island, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Inlets for Sewer Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved air inlet for sewerage systems and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which is of simple and inexpensive construction, and will fully and satisfactorily meet all requirements of municipal building regulations.
It is another object of the invention to provide a fresh air inlet of such construction that it may be readily used in connec tion with ordinary piping without provid ing the latter with a packing receiving hub, while at the same time the air inlet connection, when applied, in effect becomes an integral part of the drainage system.
It is another important object of the invention to provide a device of the above character which can be expeditiously installed and which will not deface the surface of the building wall.
Other general objects of my invention are to provide a cover plate for the air inlet connection and means for adjust-ably connecting said plate with a pipe end receiving member arranged in the opening of the building wall and whereby the plate may be readily tightened up against the face of the wall and thereby compensate for shrinkage of the masonry or other parts due to changes in temperature.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the improved fresh air inlet and in the form of construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing wherein I have shown one simple and practical embodiment of the invention. and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Referring in detail to the drawing in which I have illustrated a form of the in vention which I have found very satisfactory in practical use, the fresh air inlet pipe connection of the sewerage drainage system of the building is indicated at 5. This pipe is positioned through an opening 6 formed through the building wall 7, said opening at its outer end being of reduced diameter to thereby provide an annular shoulder 8 in spaced relation to the front face of the wall. The extremity of the pipe 5 is received within a separate hub casting 9. The cylindrical wall at one end is formed with an inwardly projecting annular flange 10, said wall at its other end being relatively thick to provide an annular flange upon the external surface thereof as indicated at 11, which is adapted to seat against the annular shoulder 8 on the wall of the opening 6. The diameter of the pipe 11 is appreciably less than the internal diameter of the hub 9 to provide a space adapted to receive the usual packing 12 of oakum and lead whereby a fluid tight joint or connection is established between the end of the pipe. and said hub.
The outer end of the opening 6 beyond the hub 9 is covered by a plate or cap 13. This plate is in the form of a brass casting and has a highly. polished outer surface. The intermediate or body portion of the plate is preferably of shallow dish shaped form and is provided with a large number of air inlet openings 14. At its outer edge the plate is formed with an extended flange 15 circumscribing the inner dished body portion thereof and disposed in offset parallel relation to the plane of said body portion. At the juncture of said flange with the body portion 1 1, said plate is further provided with a second annular flange 16 projecting at right angles to the planeof the flange 15 and from the inner side of said plate.
In addition to the air inlet openings 1d the plate 13 is provided with a plurality of screw receiving openings 17 each having a countersink at the outer end thereof. These openings receive the attaching screws 19 which are adapted to be threaded into thread openings formed through the flange 10 of the pipe receiving hub 9 adjacent the inner edge thereof. It will be noted from reference to Fig. 3 that this flange is of such Width that it projects inwardly beyond the inner surface of the pipe In the application of the device after the end of pipe 5 has been positioned in the hub member 9 and the packing applied to seal the joint between said pipe and hub member, the pipe end is inserted from the inner side of the wall into the opening 6 until the hub flange 11 engages upon annular seat 8. The brass plate 13 is then appliec against the outer face of the building walh the flange 16 thereof extending into the outer end of the opening (5 while the flange 15 projects radially from the edge of said opening upon the face of the wall. The screws 19' are then inserted through openi s 1'? in sa d plate and threaded in the openings of the hub flange 10, thereby drawing the plate 13 inwardly and holding the flange 15 thereof tightly against the wall face. The outer surface of this plate 13 being highly polished brass and the screws 19 being likewise preferably of brass, provides a neat and ornamental covering for the outer end of the wall. opening while at the same time permitting of the free and copious inlet of air through the openings 14 in said plate and the pipe 5 to the drainage system. It will be observed that the flange 16 is of less depth than the distance from the outer face of the wall to the hub flange 10, thus perniitting of periodical adjustment of the screws 19 to maintain the flange 1.5 of said plate in tight contact w th the face of the wall as may be required owing to the shrinkage of the masonry or other causes.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction of several advantages of my invention will be readily understood. Thus the dev ce may be very easily and quickly applied without defacing the surface brick or other masonry on the front face of the wall, and owing to the mounting of the hub member 9, the attaching or connecting bolts 19 for the cover plate 13 ae relieved of excessive strains whereby these bolts might be broken.
It will be further appreciated that when the device is applied in the manner above explained, the fresh air inlet becomes in ef feet a component part of the drainage system. The construction described has given excellent results in service, but it will nevertheless be understood that the device may be susceptible of embodiment in other alternat've forms, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A fresn air inlet for drainage systems including a hub member adapted to be arranged in an openingin a building wall adjacent to the outer face of said wall, said hub member having an inwardly extended annular flange at its outer end a cap plate for the outer end-of said opening having an annular flange at its outer edge to extend into said opening and second annular flange extending over the face of the wall said plate being provided with a plurality of air inlet openings and also with additional screw receiving openings, said"huli) flange having threaded openings therein, and attaching screws for said cap plate adapted to be inserted through the'screw receiving openings thereof and threaded in the openings of said hub flange to adjustably position said cap plate and tightly en gage the second named flange thereof against the face of the walh 2. A fresh air inlet for drainage systems including a hub member adapted to receive one end of an air inlet pipe for insertion in an opening extending through a building wall, said hubmember having an annular flange on its outer end projecting inwardly beyond the inner face of the air inlet pipe, a cap plate for the outer end of saidopening having a d shed body portion provided at its outer edge with a radially extending annular flange in offset relation to the body of said plate and also having a second annular flange disposed at right angles to said first named flange projecting from the concave side of said plate, said latter flange adapted to extend into the outer end of the wall opening,v the body of sa d plate having a plurality of air inlet openings therein and also having additional screw receiving openings, said hub flange having thread openings therein, and screws adapted to be inserted through the latter openings in the cap plate and adjustably threaded in the openings of the hub flange to maintain said first named flange of the cap plate in tight engagement against the face of the building wall.
