` MAURICE BIB/EAU AND GEORGES BEETHIER, OF CHATELLERAULT, FRANCE, AS-
SIGNORS TO BERNARD ROMAIN, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
Application led December 6, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, MAURICE BREAU and GEORGES BERTHIER, both citizens of the French Republic, residing, both, at Chatellerault, Vienne, France, the former at 12 Rue Saint-Jacques, the latter at 170 Grande Rue, have invented, a new and useful Improvement in Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same..
This invention relates to a locking device enabling locking or blocking any movable organ, such as a clutch lever, or similar part, and applicable also to doors, windows, drawers, and the like.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, a specific embodiment of the same will now be described more particularly, by way of example, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a plan-view, partially broken, of the latter.
Figure 3 is a side-view, partially broken, thereof,
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 8 illustrate certain details of construction hereinafter referred to.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on line A-B of Fig. 6; and
Figure 9 is an end view of the key.
As shown in said drawings, this locking device consists of a casing 1 having variable shape and dimensions, the side 2 of which is provided with two apertures 3 and 4 allowing the passage of the locking-bolt. Two suitable key-sleeves 5 and 6 are fastened. upon the plates 7 and 8 for enabling the insertion of a key 9. ln each of these sleeves 5 and 6 is located a slotted part 10, Figs. 6 and 8, of suitable dimensions, provided with a variable number of wards 10, each said slotted part being permanently kept in its Vnormal position by a coil-or like spring 11.
Between the two key-sleeves 10 is placed a worm 12 of suitable shape and dimensions, in both ends of which are provided two sockets 13 and 14. This worm 12 meshes `with a helically grooved nut 15 internally LOCK.
Serial No. 520,399.
From the above description the operation of the devic'e will be readily understood.
The key 9, the end of which has pins 23, 24 to fit into sockets 13 and 14 of the worm ends 12, is inserted into the keysleeve 5 or 6 by pushing it well up to the bottom, so that the slotted part 10 is Jforced inward by projection 19 ot' the key (see Fig. 8), and presents itself with its wards opposite the grooves 20 of the stationary dovetailed member 20, thus permitting rotation of part 10, and of the key and worm 12.
The thrust of the slotted part 10 is terminated when the bearing 21 of the key abuts against the washer 22 of the sleeve. At this moment, the two pins 23, 24 of the key enter into the sockets 13, 14 of the worm 12. By rotating this worm by means or' the key, a rotary motion of the nut 15 is obtained, which latter, being restrained from lateral motion by bracket 15, actuated the bolt 16 through the medium of its thread and the internal thread 15 of the nut 15.
At each complete revolution, the slot oi' the slotted part 10 is brought opposite wards 20 and tends to be pushed by the coil spring 11 to force out the key. As a result, closing by a double or triple revolution, care must be taken to maintain the key pushed up to the bottom in the closing device.
It must be understood that it is possible, without departing from the scope of the invention, to modify the pinions or the toothed wheels, to vary, when required, the lengths of the threaded parts and to increase or decrease the number and the dimensions of the wards of the parts 10 and 20. Moreover, it is obvious that the shape of the closing device and of the locking-bolt can be changed in very numerous manners, and that the key and its operating pins may be of any approved design.
Claims:
1, A lock, comprising a casing, a helically threaded lock bolt in the casing, a threaded nut restrained for rotary motion only, and receiving the threaded bolt, and having helical grooves on its outer periphery, and a key operated, helically threaded worm, in mesh with said nut.
2. A lock as in claim 1, said key operated worm having a key receiving socket, there being an adj acently positioned key way, and a spring pressed ward containing slotted cylinder and a Cooperating stationary Ward each side of the Worm, eaeh key Way conmemoer positioned in the key Way, whereby taining cooperating Ward members. unauthorized n'ianipulation of said look holt n testimony whereof, We have Signed out 10 is prevented. names to Jchis specieaion.
3. A lock as in claim l, said key operated Worm havingkey receiving sockets onleaeh h/LURCE BREAU.
side thereof, and a key Way positioned on GEORGES BERTI-HER.
