GOMBINATION-LDGK. v
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Apr. 15, 1919'.
Application filedFebx-uary 23, 1918. Serial No. 218,761.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE WATERFIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Combination-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a particularly simple and eflicient combination lock particularly applicable for locking the gear shifting and brake levers of automobiles. The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is i had to the accompanying drawings in whichlike characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view partly in section of my lock. A
Fig. 2 is an edge view of one of the shackle sections and associated parts.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, partly in elevation of the locking mechanism and contiguous parts.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation looking to the left in Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a face view and an edge view of one of the disks of the indicator rings.
Figs. 7 and 8 are respectively, a. face view and an edge view of one of the indicator members.
Figs. 9 and 10 are respectively a face view and an edge view of one of the rings within each indicator ring.
This lock comprises generally, opposing sections or shackles movable into and out of interlocking engagement, telescoping guides including Sections associated respectively with the shackle sections and locking mechanism including parts carried by the shackle sections.
The shackle sections are each shown as double in construction in order to engage with two parts, as the brake lever and the gear shifting lever of an automobile.
1 and 2 are respectively the shackle sections, the shackle section 1 having parallel guides 3 on opposite sides of the central portion, and the section 2 having guides or rods 4 telescoping into the guides 3 and being provided with heads 5 at their inner ends for preventing detachment of the sections 1 and 2. The shackle sections are also provided at their opposing ends with interfittirrg tongi-les and sockets 6 and 7.
The locking mechanism includes members associated respectively with the shackle sections 1, 2 and located between the guides 3 and 4, the parts of the locking mechanism including a shaft or post 8 having a threaded portion 9 threading into the shackle section 1 and a part 10 associated with the shackle section 2 and having a threaded end IE1 turning into the shackle section 2. The post 8 is formed with a lengthwise keyway 12 and external pins or spaced apart lugs 13 having spaces 14 between their opposing ends.
The locking parts associated with the shackle section 1 inaddition to the post 8 further include rings 15 mounted on the post 8, each having a notch 16 for receiving oneof thelugsl 13-so as tobe locked to the post 8 and also a diametrically opposite notch 17 alined with the keyway 12, a ring 18 mounted on the former ring to turn thereon, and adisk 19 mounted on the side of each ring 18 and locked thereto, the disk being movable in the spaces 14 between the lugs 13 and having a notch 20 for coming into alinement with the keyway 12, and notch 17. Friction ratchets 18 consisting of spring pressed balls are interposed between the rings 15, 18.
The post 10 is formed with notches 21 and lugs 22 between the notches, the post 10 being movable endwise into the keyway 12 and the lugs 22 projecting above the periphery thereof so as to interlock with the margins 20 of the disks 19 and to be permitted to be moved endwisely out of operative position when the notches 20 of all the disks are a-lined with the keyway 12. The lugs of the post 10 also slide through the notches 17 of the disks 15.
The disks 19 are provided with a series of holes 23 thereon corresponding in position to the numbers on the periphery of the rings 18 and the ring 18 is provided with a pin 24 for entering any one of these holes 23. By shiftin the disk 19 relatively to its ring 18 the com ination of numbers of the disks required to brin all the notches 20 at the same time into allnementwith the keyway 12 can be varied. Each set of rings 15 and 18 and disk 19 constitute a unit of the locking mechanism.
One end of the series of disks and rin s 15, 18 and 19 forming the combination mec anism abuts a ainst a head 25 of the post which head 25 in turn abuts againstvthe contiguous part of the shackle section 1 and said parts are held in position at their other end y a washer 26 which is keyed to the post 8 and a lock nut 27 threading on the end of the post 8. Owing to the fact that the post 8 and key 10 are detachably secured to or screw threaded into the shackle sections 1 and 2 before being attached to the shackle sections, the locking mechanism and shackle sections are readily assembled but the looking mechanism cannot be detached except when the shackle sections are separated. Furthermore owing to the assembly of the rings and disks 19 the combination can be rea ily changed.
To open the lock, the rings 18 with the numbers on the periphery thereof, and the disks 19 locked thereto by means of the holes 23 and the pin 24 are moved around the post 8 relatively to the rings 15 until all the notches 20 of the disks 19 are alined with the keyway 12 in the post 8.
To facilitate this alinement, the rings 15 are provided with notches or depressions 15 corresponding in number to thenumbers on the rings 18, into one of which notches the spring pressed ball 18 of each ring 18 enhere as each number on the rings 18 is brought into alinement with the keyway 12 of the post 8.
What I claim is:
The combination of a lock comprising a post havin a lengthwise keyway therein, and externa lugs spaced apart, rings mounted on the post and having internal keyways for receiving the lugs, and internal keyways for alinement with the keyway of the post, indicator rin s rotatably mounted on the peripheries of t e former rings, disks mounted upon the sides of the latter rings and having their inner margins movable between said lugs and formed with keyways arranged to come into and out of alinement with the keyway of the first mentioned rings, the second mentioned rings having projections on their lateral sides and their disks having a series of holes for receiving the projections and the disk being adjustable to bring any hole in position to receive the projection, and a second post movable endwise into the keyway of the former post and one of the keyways of each of the first mentioned rings, the second post having notches for receivin the inner margins of said disks, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed by name, at Syracuse in the county of Onondaga, and State of liew York, this 31st day of January, 1918.
GEORGE WATERFIELD.
