The handle socket 2O has parallel faces 31 surrounding the ends of the bore 19 and extending transversely to the axis of said bore. The end of the handle socket may be likened to a cylinder attached longitudinally along one of its curved sides to the handle member and having the side opposite such place of joinder cut awa-y to leave a fla-t face 29. The distance from the center of bore 19 to the edge of the face 20 is materially less than the distance t0 the edge of the curved surfaces 30. Therefore when the socket member 2O is assembled in the polisher it may be turned about the pivotal mounting on the bolt 18 to assume a. vertical position at which time the face Q9 is clear of the spring steel strip 28 so that the clamping member 25 rests lightly in position. IVhen the socket member Q0 is turned out of a vertical position such as any angle less than 90 degrees to the horizontal the curved face will act as a cam on the strip 28 which will cause the fianges 27 to be pressed downwardly and outwardly in the groove Q3 in the top plate,
A polishing cloth inserted between the fiange 27 and groove 23 will thus be tightly clamped in place whenever the handle socket is in a position other than perpendicular to the top plate. When the polisher is in use the handle will always necessarily be either parallel with the plates as in polishing the floor under a piece of furniture or at an angle of about 30 to l5 degrees to said plates.
IVhen it is desired t-o insert or remove a cloth it is necessary only to place the handle socket in a vertical position at which time clamping member 25 will be free to move, make the desired insertion or removal of the cloth. The weight of the clamping member will retain the cloth in position and prevent accidental separation. As soon as the handle is moved from a vertical position the clamping member automatically binds the polishing cloth as described above.
What I claim is:
1. In a floor waxer and polisher, the coinbination of a base comprisingtop and bottom plates, the top plate being adapted to be mounted on the bottom plate, a felt pad mounted on the bottom plate and having its edges secured between the plates, means to secure the plates one upon another for clamping the edges of the felt pad between said plates, upwardly extending lugs on the top plate, said top plate having spaced lateral slots across its upper face, strip of fabric extending from one of the slots over the lower face of the felt pad and terminating at the other slot, a spring member having depending flanges for seating in the slots in the top plate and engaging the strip of fabric, a handle socket member pivotally mounted adjacent its one end between the lugs on the top plate above the spring member, a pair of cam faces on the end of the handle socket adjacent the pivotal mounting, a flat face on the said end of the handle socket intermediate the cam faces, the socket member being adapted in its vertical position to have its flat face parallel to and spaced from the spring member and in a position other than vertical to have one of its cam faces in engagement with the spring member for clamping the cloth between the flanges and the walls of the slots in the top plate.
2. In a floor polisher and waxer the combination with a base having a pair of parallel grooves in its upper face adjacent opposite ends thereof, a strip of cloth hav ing its one end inserted in one of said grooves and passing around the lower face of the base and terminating in the other groove, a clamping member comprising an integral spring and flanged plates, the flanges on the plates seating in the grooves and engaging the cloth therein, a handle socket member pivotally mounted intermediate the ends of the clamping member, a fiat face on the end of the handle socket member extending transversely to the longitudinal axis thereof and arcuate cam faces on the socket member on opposite sides of the Hat face, the socket member being adapted in a vertical position to have its fiat face parallel to and spaced from the clamping member and in a nonvertical position to have one of its cam faces in engagement with the clamping member for Securing the cloth in the grooves in the base.
3. In a cloth clamping mechanism for a fioor polisher and waxer having a grooved base, the combination with a handle socket member pivotally mounted upon the base, a flat face on one end of the socket member, arcuate cam faces on opposite sides of said member adjacent the flat face, a clamping member comprising an integral flat spring strip and flanged plates mounted at the ends thereof, the flat face of the socket member being parallel to and spaced from the spring strip when said socket member is positioned perpendicular to the base, and one of the cam faces engaging the spring strip and moving the flanged plates into clamping engagement with the walls of the grooves in the base against the yielding resistance o' the spring strip whereby the ends of a cloth inserted between the flanges and the grooves may be secured when the socket member is nonperpendicular to the base.
4. In a ioor waxer and polisher, the combination of a base having spaced grooves in its top face, an integral spring clamping member, 'depending flanges on the clamping member for seating in the grooves and lili) lill a handle socket member pivotally mounted above and intermediate the ends of the clamping member, the end of the handle socket member being spaced from the clamp-V ing member when said handle member is perpendicular to the base and when in a nonperpendicular position to engage the clamping member for moving the flanges into binding engagement with the Walls of the grooves.
5. In a floor WaXer and polisher the combination with a base having a pair of grooves in its upper face, of a clamping member comprising a fiat spring strip and integral depending flanges extending from the ends thereof and a handle socket member having cam faces about its one end pivotally mounted on the base above the clamping member for assuming an inoperative position with the cam faces spaced from the clampingmember and an operative position with a cam face engaging the clamping member againstthe yielding resistanceof the spring strip whereby the flanges are moved into binding engagement with the Walls of the grooves in the base.
6. In a floor polisher the combination with a base member having grooves in its upper face, a cloth clamping member comprising an integral flat spring having depending ianges for engagement in the JESSE D. LYON.
