Be it known that I, HARRY PosT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Coats and Caps or Hoods, of which the following is a specification.-

This invention relates to improvements in combined coat and hoods, and more particularly it relates to coats made of fur, althgugh other materials may be used if desire The object of the invention is to provide a simple, neat and practical coat which has a concealed hood when the hood is not in use and which hood may be readily put into use if desired. Also the hood may be de-' tached so that the coat may be worn Without the hood or the hood may be worn without the coat.

Another object of my invention is to provide a concealed pocket in the coat collar which whenv the hood'is concealed therein does not made a bulky or bulgy appearance.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hood which may adjust itself readily to different shapes of the heads of the wearer, and which also may be used in various forms or styles.

For these objects and further objects as will appear herein, a complete description of the invention herewith follows as also drawin s of the same, and the invention will be fina lly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings,-

Fig. 1 is a side view of my improvedcoat and collar with the hood concealed therein.

Fig. 2 is a similar side view but with the hood as Worn on the head of the wearer.

Fig. 3 is a central, sectional view, showing the hood both concealed and exposed.

Fig. 4 shows a sectional view with the hood concealed and the portions fastened together.

Fig. 6 is a side view of the hood itself showing the adjustability thereof as also showing the two forms or styles in which it may be used.

Fig. 7 is an arrangement of snap-fasteners which enables the hood to be concealed or exposed depending upon which fasteners are utilized.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the various figures.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the coat 10 is provided with the usual arms 11, and has a collar 12 secured thereto.

In the embodiment the coat is buttoned at the front 13 and the collar is likewise buttoned at the front as indicated by 14.

Within the collar is provided a concealed pocket indicated by 15, into which the hood 16 may be placed, and when it is placed within this concealed pocket 15 it arranges itself in such a manner due to the special arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described, that the hood will not bulk at the collar.

This is clearly visible from the drawings Fig. 1 which shows the hood concealed Without bulging at the rear of the collar. When the hood is desired to be used, it is extracted from the concealed pocket 15 and placed upon the head of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 2.

Referring now to Fig. 3, the coat 10 in the embodiment shown is made of fur, but it is clear that any other suitable material may be used, and this fur has a lining of silk or other material indicated by 18.

To the portion where the exterior of the coat 10 is secured to the interior lining a snap-fastener 19 is provided. At this juncture of the fur and lining, as at point 20, a collar is attached which collar is composed of the exterior fur or other material, and an interior lining 21 which forms the backing of the collar and extends the full length and width of the collar.

To this juncture 20 attached, there is fastened the lining 21, and also one portion 22 of a concealed pocket 23. The other portion of this concealed pocket 23 namely the end-portion 24 is secured to the outer layer of fur or other material about at the point 25.

At this portion of the lining which forms the pocket, there are arranged three snapfasteners as indicated by 26, 27, 28, these being in a line, as all are shown in Figures 5 and 7 At right angles to this line, an offset therefromds a further snap-fastener 29.

then the snap-fastener 27 is brought into enga ement with the snap-fastener 19 and there y the openable portion of the pocket is closed so that not alone is the pocket concealed but also the hood therein, and to all ordinary appearances it would seem as if there was an ordinary coat consisting simply of a cape and collar.

When it is desired to use the hood, the

snap-fastener 19 is disengaged from the snap-fastener 27 and the central snapfastener of the hood is disengaged from the snap-fastener 29 and brought into engagement with the snap-fastener 27; and then the hood is brought out into the full line position shown in Fig. 3. A

The hood itself consists of an outer layer of fur or the like, indicated by 16 and an inner lining indicated by 31 around the circumference of the hood and between the outer layer and the inner lining there is arranged an elastic or rubber band 32 which is so arranged in respect to the lining and the outer layer that the hood may be adjusted into position depending upon the different sizes of the heads. v

The hood as shown in the drawings, consists also of a downwardly extending portion 33 which adapts itself to the shape of the back of the neck of the wearer, and provides the secured covering to the neck when the hood is in use and fastened to the collar as before described.

This hood with the neck-portion 33 can also be used separately from the coat and collar in the form shown in full lines in Fig. 6 or, if desired, the neck-portion 33 may be bent inwardly to the hood as shown in dotted lines, and thereby a totally different-looking cap provided which has its uses for different purposes. So for instance a lady may be desirous of wearing the hood with extended neck-portion on the street or in localities where there are drafts, but on the other hand she may only care to wear the hood as a cap as at luncheons or the like, and in that case the neck-portion is inserted as in the formshown in dotted lines.

In Fig. 5 there is shown a hood 16 with the collar 12 and coat 10 placed upon a flat position it has three snapcially adaptable to fur coats, in that it is desirous to provide an improved skating coat which may be used outdoors or on the rinks as a complete article with the hood attached to coat and with the. collar as shown like an ordinary collar, but if it is desired the hood may be detached and concealed within the coat, or the hood ma be changed into a cap and used in this form whereby various adjustable factors enter into the structure which give a pleasing appearance when used.

As stated, instead of fur, any suitable material may be used.

Thefcoat is not alone adaptable to ladies and misses wear but is especially adapted for the use of children.

' My improved coat has a special advantage that the hood is secured to the uppermost edge of the collar when the collar is used as a collar. It is not necessary in order to use the hood to use the collar in upright position. This has the great advantage that the collar is used as'a collar in its" position over the shoulders, and the hood is used in the same manner as if the collar was not there.

This has many advantages and gives special independence of use in respect to the hood and the collar. Moreover, the structure heretofore described has the advantage that the collar is exterior to the hood and coat instead of being interior thereof.

It may further be seen that I have provided a very practical and simple device" which enables the hood to be readily concealed within the collar, and readil taken therefrom, and used as a hood if desired.

I have shown various embodiments of my invention, but it is clear that certain items of construction may be modified, and these should be considered within the spirit of my invention, and defined in the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure nected with the collar portion, the collar portion remaining as a collar portion whether the hood is within or without the same. 4

2. A combined coat and cap, consisting of a coat portion, a collar portion secured to the coat portion, and having a concealed pocket therein extending from the neck portion of the coat portion to the neck portion of the collar portion, detachable fastening means on the neck portion of the collar portion, an independent hood, fastening means on the hood adapted to engage the fastening means of the neck portion, a snap fastener on the coat portion adapted to be engaged by one of said fastening means of the neck portion when said fastening means is disengaged from the hood, whereby the hood is entirely concealed within the pocket when the neck portion fastening means engages the coat portion fastening means and closes the pocket.

A combined coat and cap, consistin of a coat portion, a collar portion secure to the coat portion, said collar portion having a concealed pocket extending from the point below the upper end of the collar and the upper end of the coat portion, and a hood fastened to the collar within the pocket and adapted to be withdrawn from the pocket and used as a hood connected to the collar within the ocket.

A com ined coat and cap, consisting of a coat portion, a collar portion secured to the coat portion, said collar portion having a concealed pocket the opening thereof below the upper end of the inner face of the collar and above the upper end of the coat portion, and a hood fastened to the collar portion Within the pocket adjacent the upper end whereby the hood can be withdrawn from the collar portion and worn as a hood allowing the collar to remain in its normal position.
