Be it known that I, Anci-rm M. CLossoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Shook Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which Jform a part of this applition.

This invention relates to improvements in the box making art, and particularly to a device to be used in connection with the making of fruit boxes or crates by hand.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a means for holding the end shook of a box in a vertical position for the above stated purpose, and in such a manner that their ends will be in a common vertical plane and their longitudinal edges in a common horizontal plane, and soy that they will be firmly supported in such relative positions in order tto enable the bottom shook to be readily nailed to the end shook.

Another object is to provide adjustment means whereby shook of any height or length, may be employed, and a box of any length may be made, with the use of a. single shook holder.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eifective 'For the purposes for which it is designed.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.y

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings,the numeral 1 denotes a pair of relatively wide and smooth-faced bars. forming base members. adapted to be mounted on a table or bench 2 in parallel relation and to extend transversely thereof. These bars. are coupled together, and held in adjustably spaced relation by means of rods 3 passing therethrough and extending therebetween, these rods being threaded from their ends Jfor a certain distance and having adjustable nuts 4 on such threaded portions which bear against the opposite sides of the bars 1.

apart any desired distance within reason, and at the same time may be easily adjusted so as to remain parallel to each other.

Extending lengthwise of the bars 1 and overhanging the opposite edges of the same somewhat are plates 5 disposed in a vertical plane.

Each plate has a pair of vertically slotted members 6 extending do-wn alongside the side edges of the bars 1, and adjustably secured thereto by bolts 7 passing through the bars and through the slots of the members 6.

These slotted members project below the bars, the table 2 being cut away as at 8 to receive the slotted ends.

By means of this construction, the vertical position of the plates relative to the bars may be altered at will.

Extending lengthwise of the plates 5 'and positioned along the inner or adjacent faces thereof are horizontal spring members 9, comprising flat strips set in a vertical plane, or parallel t0 the plates 5. The rear ends 10 of these members lie against the plates, and are adjustably secured thereto for sliding movement in a horizontal plane, by means of bolts 11 passing through horizontal slots 12 in the plates.

Forward of said rear ends 10 the spring members are bent outwardly at right angles to the plates 5, for a certain distance, as at 13. They are then bent to extend parallel to the plates 5, and then curve inwardly toward the plates, terminating at the free ends with an outward curve or flare suiiiciently spaced from the plates, with the normal tension of the springs. to enable shook to be inserted between said ends and the plates, the shook being then pressed lengthwise of the springs, spreading the same away from the plates, until they abut against the right angled stop portions 13.

The shook rest on the base members 1, which are of course the same height. They are firmly held both against toppling over and undesired longitudinal movement by reason of the springs pressing the shook against the plates.

The springs are adjusted so that the stops 13 are in common transverse alinement, so that when the shook are abutted thereagainst, the shook-ends will likewise of course be in similar alinement. The shook are then in position for the box maker to nail the bottom members thereon, with thel Y adjustability ot the springs enables shook oi diiiferent lengths being inserted between the Y springs, with the assurance that the outer ends oi. the shook will be always in the same position relative to the outer ends ot the plates and springs, as is desirable.

The plates and the members thereon being identical, they are interchangeable one with the other, and may be reversed in their setting relative to the base members without removing the latter, which when once spaced a certain distance apart, are preterably screwed or bolted to the table.

F rom the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects ot' the invention as set forth herein.

Vihile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations rom such detail may be yresorted to as do not form a` departurelfrom the s irit of the invention, as dened by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and use'tul and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1.A shook-holder including parallel base members, shook holding means carried thereby, such means comprising` plates eX- te-nding lengthwise of the base members and set in a plane at right angles thereto, and horizontal spring members mounted on the plates and arranged to automatically clamp shook inserted between the springs and plates, the Vplates being vertically adjustable on Vthe base members and the springs being horizontally adjustable on the plates.

2. A shook-holder including parallel 'base members, shook holding means carried thereby, such means comprising plates extending lengthwise ot the base members and set in a plane at right angles thereto, and iorizontal spring members mounted on the plates and arranged to automatically clamp shook inserted between the springs and plates, vertically slotted members projecting downwardly from the plates on the sides thereof opposite the springs, cured in the base members and passing through tliekslotted members.
