SCREEN-DOOR SHOO-FLY ATTACHMENT.
Application filed October 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. SMITH and PAUL WV. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residents of Oelwein, in the count-y of Fayette and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Screen- Door Shoo-Fly Attachments; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention, as applied.
Figure 2 is a side View on a larger scale showing the parts of the invention, partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the invention, as applied.
Figure L is a section on the line 4-4 Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective View of the pulleys located in the angle of the door casing.
The invention has relation to attachments to screen doors, designed to prevent the entrance of flies to the house when the door is opened and, through the agitation of the fan, to cause any flies upon or suficiently near the door to be shooed out of the open doorway, the object of the invention being an improved device of simple construction and operation.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates a screen door, 3 the door casing, and 4 a revoluble Shoo-fly or fan rotatable in bearings 5 of said casing, the fan being located on the inside of the door casing and screen door.
An upright coiled spring 6 is attached at its lower end to an eye 7 secured to the side of the door casing adjacent to the hinges of the screen door, and to the upper end of the spring is connected a flexible cord or line 8, extending upwardly in a vertical di- Serial No. 508,572.
motion or substantially vertical direction and being coiled at 9 once around the rotatable shaft 4 of the fan, thence passing again upwardly over a vertical guide pulley 10 secured to the top of the door casing, and at right angles around a horizontal guide pulley 11 adjacent to the vertical pulley, and then passing horizontally towards the center portion of the doorway, and at right angles around a second horizontal pulley 12 secured to the top of the door casing, and at its end being secured to an eye 13 secured to the upper portion of the screen door near the center of the upper rail or frame bar thereof. The adjacent vertical and horizontal pulleys 10 and 11 are preferably mounted upon a single bracket 14.
The invention also acts to automatically close the screen door, once it is opened, and is applicable to screen doors swinging in cit-her direction or hinged at either side.
An ordinary coiled spring such as is commonly used to close screen doors is used in the present case, and is of advantage in that it holds its tension well, and in that the tension may be adjusted to suit conditions by adjusting the length of the cord or line. The spring being located vertically at the side of the door casing at the hinge side is out of the way and will notin any manner disturb passengers going in and out.
An extensible coiled spring pulled out or extended in the opening of the door has been found most efficient in practice, and is preferred to any other form of spring.
We claim A screen door closer and shoe-fly attachment, consisting of a horizontal revoluble fan, having its axis parallel to the door and having journal bearings located adjacent to and spaced from the top of the inner side of a door casing, an angular frame adapted to fit into one of the upper corners of the door frame, bearing pins on said angular frame extending at right angles to each other, an upright coiled spring having its lower end secured to the side of said casing adjacent the door hinges, a vertical pulley and a horizontal pulley located adjacent each other and to the hinge side of the door above said fan and mounted upon the said bearing pins, a second horizontal pulley above said fan, and a flexible cord connected In testimony whereof we afiix our signaat its lower end to said spring and passing tures, in presence of two witnesses.
