DISPLAY CONTAINER,
Application fl'led July 26,
. the class of containers or boxes having lids or covers hinged thereto, adapted. to fold over the open side of thecontainer and to remain in an upward position for display of the goods within the container and the display matter on the lid.
The object of my invention is to provide a container of the class referred to with means to retain the lid or cover' in an upwardly and preferably rearwardly inclined position so that it will neither fall too far backwardly nor have a tendency to fall forwardly "when opened for display, and whereby the lid may be folded over the open side of the box to conceal and protect the contents of it. N
My invention comprises novel details of improvements that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, where- Fig. 1 is'a side elevation of a container embodying my inventidn, showing the lid in display position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container;
Fig. 3 is, a plan view of the container showing the lid closed;
Fig. 4 illustrates a blank for the container of Figs. 1, 2 and 3;
Fig-5. is a perspective view of a modification and Fig. 6 illustrates a blank for the container of Flg. 5.
Similar numerals of reference indicate correspondin parts in the several views.
The main body of the container is indicated at 1, shown comprising a bottom 2, a back wall 3, a front wall 4 and side walls 5. At 6, is a lid or cover shown hinged'to theouter edge of back wall 3, adapted to fold over the opening of the container and to extend ugewardly for display. While the lid 6 may hin any desired way, I, have shown the lid ged to the back wall 3 in.
1923. Serial 1101653559."
hinged to the back wall by means of a score I line at 7 in the material of the blank for the container, providing a transverse hinge.
While the main body 10f the c'ontainer may be made many desired or well known way, I'hav'e shown the same inFigs. 1 to 4 as formed from. a single piece of material spaced score lines 8 3I1d 9'along which the back wall 3' and the front wall 4 respectively may be folded to be 'set up, said blank being shown provided with spaced score lines 10, along which the side walls 5 are attached. The back wall 3 is shown as illustrated in the blank in Fig. 4 having provided with side: extensions 11 and the front wall 4 is shown provided'with side extensions 12'," foldable along the score lines 10, whereby, when the sides are set up, the extensions 11 and 12 be secured to the side walls 5 by glue or other suitable means.
To retain the lid 6 in a display position I provide bracing webs 13 that connect the 1 from the adjacent upper edges of the extensions 11, along the extensions 7 of the score line- 7 of the blank, providing secondary hinges. It will be observed that the primary hinges 14 together with the secondary hinges 7 form obtuse angles, whereby the lid may extend in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position respecting the body of the container, and the primary hinges 14 lie between the planes of the sidewalls of the container, as distinguished from prior constructions known to me,
where lids for containers have been provided with bracing webs attached to the sides of the lids on score lines that are rectangular to the upper edges of the back walls, and where the bracing webs are in the planes of the side walls of the 0011-" tainer, whereby the lid cannot assume a position rearward of a perpendicular respecting the container. It will also be observed that the bracing webs. in my container lie jacent side walls, of the back wall and of the lid, when the bracing webs are fully extended with the lid in an upwardly and rearwardly' inclined position and it will be also observed that the primary hinges are convergent. In order that the lid 6 may be folded over the 'open side of the container, I provide the bracing webs 13 with score lines at 15 extending from the angles fromed at the junctions of the score lines 7 and 14. The score lines 15 are shown at.
angles of 45 degrees with respect to the hinge, score lines 14. The construction described enables the bracing webs 13 to be folded inwardly when thelid is to be closed. It will be observed that" the outer edges 13 extend'into the body of the lid where such edges are detached from the lid by cuts at 16in the lid.
, In' the form of my invention shown in Figs. 5and 6, the side walls 5 comprise two .members 5*, 5 each, hinged along the score lines 5, to fold inwardly over and retain the rectangular side extensions 11, to which the bracing webs are hinged by the secondary hinges at 7*, the members '5", having lips 17, retained by tongues 18, cut out of the bottom 2. In this form, the container is of the unglued variety. My improvements may be applied in any other desired form of container having its front, back and side-walls attached together in any other well known id y means of my improvements, I am enabled to provide a-container,preferablyof the one piece variety, whereby the lid may be retained by. the bracing webs in a definite upwardly and rearwardly inclined position to permit the display matter on the lid to be readily visible. My improvementsare inexpensive to manufacture and enable the lid to be set up for display by merely raising it from the container without requiring any adjustment of parts, since the oblique.
relation of the bracing webs to the adjacent parts of the container cause said webs to automatically locate themselves in their proper relative positions upon raising the lid. I
It will be understood that with the exten-,
sions'll secured to or' retained by the side thereto and a bracing web hinged to the a lid joined to said back wall by means ofsaid hinge, a bracing web hingedly connected with a-lower side portion of said lid by means of a primary hinge, said primary hinge being oblique to said transverse hinge, "said bracing web being hingedly connected with an adjacent side wall by means of a secondary hinge coinciding with said sidewalls upper edge.
4. A display container comprising a back wall, ,a pair of side walls, a transverse hinge coinciding with said backwalls upper edge,
a lid joined to said back' Wall by means of said hinge, a bracing web hingedly connected with a lower side'portion of said lid by means of a primary hinge and said bracing web being hingedly connected also with an adjacent side wall by means of a secondary hinge coinciding with said side walls 'upper edge, said primaryv hinge forming an obtuse angle with said secondary hinge.
5. A display container as set forth claim 3, said bracing web lying in a plane oblique to the plane of said adjacent side wall, when said bracing web is fully extended with said lid in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position.
6. 4%. display container as set forth in claim 4, said bracing web lying in a plane as j oblique to the plane of, said adjacent side wall, when said bracing web is fully extend-' ed with said lid in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position.
7. A display container comprising a back wall, a pair of side walls, a transverse hinge coinciding with said back walls upper edge,
a lid joined to said back wall by'means of said hinge, a pair of bracing webs, each hingedlv connected with a lower side portion of said lid by means of a rimary hinge, said primary hinge being ob ique to said transverse hinge, said bracing web being also hingedly connected with an adjacent side 'wall by means of a secondary hinge coincidingwith said side walls upper edge.
