P. LE R. KERSEY BUCKLE Filed May 18, 1923 Patented Feb. 3, 192 5.
UNITED i BUCKLE.
Application filed May 18,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY Ln ROY KunsnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a buckle or fastener adapted to retain the ends of a flexible element adapted to be passed about a bundle of papers, or anything which is to be retained.
The buckle o1 fastener embodies a pair of hingedly connected jaws. and the invention aims to provide a releasing member which is so constructed that, when it is moved in one direction, the hold of the jaws upon the flexible element will be released.
It is within the province of the disclosureto improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a section on the line of Figure 1; Figure 4 is an elevation showing a modified form of releasing member; and Figure 5 is a perspective view delineating a modified form of the invention.
The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a hinge piece 1. A main jaw 2 is provided and includes side arms 3 having eyes 4 mounted on the hinge piece 1, the arms 8 being connected by a cross piece 5. Adjacent to the cross piece 5, the side arms 4 slant outwardly to form enlargements 6 at the ends of the cross piece. An auxiliary jaw 7 is supplied, the same includin side arms 8 having eyes 9 mounted on the inge piece 1, a cross piece 10 connecting the side arms 8. The side arms 8 are other end of the flexible element is extended 1923. Serial No. 639,848.
supplied with concaved recesses 11. located adjacent to the cross piece 10,
A releasing member 12, in the form of a link, is mounted slidably on the arms 3 of the jaw 2 and is held on the said arms by,,; the enlargements 6. As shown in Figure 3, the link 12 is closed, the ends 14 thereof being brought together. However, the 'releasing member or link 15 of Figure 4 may be used if considered expedient, the ends of;- the releasing member or link 15 being spaced apart, as indicated at 16. The numeral 17 marks a flexible element, one end ofwhich is connected at 18 to the hinge piece 1.- The beneath the cross piece 10 of the jaw 7 through the releasing member 12,, over the cross piece 5 of the jaw 2, between the cross piece 5 of the jaw 2, and the cross piece 10 of the jaw 7 and thence forwardly, between the cross piece 10 and the body portion of the flexible element 17, all as indicated generally by the numeral 19 in Figure 2.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 2, of the drawings, the flexible element is bound between the cross pieces 5 and 10, the lower portion of the releasing member 12 being received in the recesses 11 of the side arms 8 of the jaw 7. It will be obvious that, when the releasing member 12 is slid to the left in Figure 2, the jaws 7 and 2 will be separated, the hold of the aws on the flexible element 17 being released, and it being possible to loosen the flexible element.
In Figure 2, the device appears in fastened position, the flexible member 17 being passed about the package to be held. Tension on the flexible member 17 causes binding pressure'on the upper loop which passes about the aw 5-and under the aw 10. That portion of the member 17 which is below the jaw 10 is pressed against the package and there is a binding action between the parts 5 and 10. Pressure exerted on the 1 member 12 causes the parts 3 and 8 to separate and the binding action between the elements 5 and 10 and between the element 10 and the package is broken and the flexible member 17 is allowed to slip.
That form of the invention which is shown in Figure 5, is constructed much like the form shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, and 0pcrates in the same way. The description of the, form shown in Figure 5, therefore, 11.
may be shortened. In Figure 5, the" main j aw' is denoted by athe numeral 20 and :has side'arms'fzl and 22 and a cross piece 23, the enlargements appearing at 24. The auxiliary aw is marked by the numeral 25 and includes side arms 26 and 27 and a cross piece 28, the recesses being shown at 29 and the releasing member being marked by the numeral 30. The arm 21: of the jaw 20 has a cross piece 31 joined to the arm 26 of the jaw 25. The arm 22 of'the jaw 20 is provided with a transverse end piece 32 connected by an eye '33 withthe parts 21 and 31 at their place of juncture. The arm 27 of'the jaw 25 is provided with a transverse head piece 3 L connected byan eye 35 with" the parts 22 and 32at theirplace of juncture, an integral structure'resulting and the relative hinged or swinging. movement betwveen'thejaWs-QO and 25 being possible.
"The operation of the device vshown in Fig .ure' 5 does not differ from the operation of the'deviced'isclosed inFigures 1, 2 and 3.
"connected for relative swinging movement and comprising, each, side arms and a cross j piece connecting the side arms anda releasing member mounted on the side arms of one jaw, a part of the releasing member -being'located between-the side arms of the respective jaws, the arms of one jaw definingean acute angle:w1th-.-respect t0 the arms of the other aw when the aws are closed and the said other jaw being so constructed of which extends, in a loop, through the releasing member and about the cross piece of .one jaw, jthe end of the loop being extended reversely between the cross pieces of the jaws and between the cross piece of the, other jaw and the body of the flexible element.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of twoiwitnesses.
