Application filed September 20, 1923. Serial No. 663,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH E. BADGER, aBriti-sh subject, and MAX K. GOLDEN and VICTOR K. GOLDEN, citizens of the United I States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tubular Fabrics, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ,such as will enable-others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relatesto a tubular fabric and the manufacture of same for constructing hats or other article of apparel.
example buckram, hairc 0th,- or other ma-- terial of like nature, enclosed within the outer fabric to insure the latter against (:01- lapsing when sewed together. to -form. the crown and brim of a hat or other article of apparel. g
In the drawings accompanying speciof the tubular" fication:
Figure 1 is an elevation braid fabric showing the abutting edges of the outer strip sewed together and overlap mg a lining strip of buckram or like sti fabric.
material enclosed within thelouter Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view-throughthe same.
Figure. 3 is a diagrammatical perspective view showing a strip ofplush or othensuitable fabric and a. lining ofbuckram or other stifl'eningf materialas it'is sha into tubular form in its assage throng a suitable guide member a aptedto cause the edges of the outer fabric to overlap the" edges of the lining -showin the'abutting' edges of the outer fabric sgwed together. by means, (not shown, but well understood m the sewmg .guide machine art) as it leaves the the longitudinal edges of the inner layer the manufacture of hats which consists in Figure 4 represents a womans hat constructed of the tubular braid, sewed together to form the body and brim. I I
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings:
.A, re resents a strip of plush, silk or other fa ric. B, indicates a narrow strip of buckram enclosed within the outer fabric:the edges A of the latter being bent to overlap thev edges of the lining by a suitable guide C, as it passes through the latter. D, denotes a line of stitchin securing the abutting ed es of the outer abric together. to form a tu 'ular braid. i
Having thus described our invention what we claim isz' 1. As=an article of manufacture, a tube for the production of hats comprising an inner and an outer layer of material folded one within the other to form' a tube, the inner layer being composed of stifi material to render the tube stiff and prevent colla sing of the outer layer, the longitudimil edges of the' outer layer overlapping and a'line of stitching connecti the abut- 75 ting edges of the outer layer toget er.
2. The method of producing a tube for placing two layers of material in superimposed relation, the inner layer being narrower than the outer layer and stiff, passing the superimposed layers through a guide to simultaneously force the longitudinal of the outer layer 'in'to overlappin relation with the longitudinal; edges of t e inner layer and-to fold the layers into non-collapsible tabular form and sewing the abut-- ting edgesof-the layers together.
In' testimony whereof, we sign this speclfication in the presence of two witnesses. I
