Patented Jan. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES CLARENCE F. MUELLER, 0F GUTTENBERG, IOWA. i
COMBINATION FOLDING BRUSH AND 00MB.
Application led May 8,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. MUELLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Guttenberg, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combina- .tion Folding Brushes and Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination folding brush and comb appliances, and the object of my improvement is to supply a device of this class wherein are mounted for alternate extension and retraction upon common movable supports and upon opposite parts thereof brushes and combs suitable for human use.
With the foregoing and other objects in 'View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the annexed drawings of my invention, Figs. 1 and 2 are opposite side elevations of my improved device as extended, and Figs. 3 and 4 are opposite side elevations thereof as collapsed or retracted. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross sections of the device as respectively extended and retracted.
1 is a rectangular U-shaped frame, open at the top, and 7 is a closed hollow oblong inner frame mounted slidably within the frame 1 telescopically for limited extension and retraction lengthwise relative thereto, and both frames are preferably made of metal bars. On the upper ends of the members of the frame 1 are pairs of spaced lugs 6 which inclose the abutting parts of the inner frame 7 as guides and inclosing stops. At a short distance from the lower crossmember of the frame 1 the side members have other spaced pairs of lugs 2, longer than the lugs 6, oriced to receive rivets 3 which latter fasten between said lugs a pair of angle-bars 4 spaced apart at 5 and held by blocks 15 or in any other manner.
A plurality of angle-bars 8 are positioned within the inner frame 7 lengthwise and spaced apart slightly to afford scope for rocking to and fro, and have at their upper ends diminished parts 10 which are carried through apertures in the top cross member 1924. serial No. 711,920.
of said frame 7 and bent over at a right angle. The angle-bars 8 are partially cut away at their lower .ends to provide flat cam-bars 9 which are twisted a quarter turn and have their extremities passed through the interspace 5 of the pair of cross-bars 4 and have diminished terminals 10 bent over at a right angle.
In principle the angle-bars 8 may be fashioned on opposite sides in any desired manner, or have any desired kind of appliances mounted thereon. I have shown these bars supplied along one longitudinal edge with comb teeth 11. I have mounted a plurality of small brushes 12 upon the opposite parts of the bars 8, which may be secured thereto in any suitable way. As shown, the shanks of the brushes are secured by means of wires 14 passed therearound and woven through small holes 13 in said bars. Both the teeth and the brushes on the bars are preferably arranged in staggered relation.
The device is extended or collapsed by sliding the inner frame 7 out of or into the outer frame 1, which causes the cammembers 9 in sliding between the cross-bars 4 to take a quarter turn, .whereby the comb teeth and the brushes are rocked outwardly, or inwardly as illustrated.
When so collapsed, the device takes up but little room in a pocket or container. The device may be used upon animals, if desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising slidably assembled members, and a number of elements rockingly mounted on one member, said elements having brushes and combs respectively projecting from opposite faces thereof, and having cam portions slidably connected with the other member to convert the relative sliding movements of the members into rocking movements of said elements.
2. A device of the character described, comprising slidably assembled members, a number of elements rockingly mounted on one member, and having twisted cam portions slidably connected with the other member to convert the relative rectilinear movements of said members into rocking movements of said elements, and appliances secured on opposite faces of said elements.
3. A device `of the ehaaet`e11-desoribed, comprising slidably assembled members, a number of elements, roekingly `mounted on one member, comb teetli formed along like faces 'of said elementsh. brush devices mounted upon like opposite faces of said elements, and twisted cam terminals formed on said elements and slidably mounted upon the other member whereby rectilinear slid ing movements of said members is converted 10 intoroekingnmovements of said elements to extend o1" retract said comb teeth and said brush devices. l v
In testimony whereof I ax my signature. Waterloo, IoWu,Maroh 3, 1924.
CLARENCE F. MUELLER.
