FOLDING TABLE.

Be it linown that I, ANTON J. UPHUs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of Seattle, in `the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Tniprovements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding tables and table-like structures, such as ironing boards which normally are folded up into a vertical position within al casing or against a wall, and which when in use are swung downward into a horizontal position.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive type of construction for such articles, which at the saine time is easy to operate and which holds the table securely when it is swung down and which takes care of the same effectively when :it is swung up. y
The features of my invention which l believe to be new and upon which. I desire to obtain a patent will be herein set forth and then particularly defined by the claims.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the type of construction now preferred by me.
Figure 1 shows the table top in edge View and the frame therefor in vertical section, the same being shown as secured to a wall.
Figure 2 is a front or face view of the table when folded, into position against the face of the wall.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken through one of the side jambs of the frame,
showing the manner of guiding and holding the inner end of the table.
Figure is a face view of the metal trough which is used to line the channel in the jambs which receive the pivot and guide rollers of the table.
The frame in which the table is mounted consists of two side jambs l joined at top and bottom by bars l0. These are made of such size as to receive the table top 2 within them, said table top closing the opening much in resemblance to the action of a door. This frame is also preferably provided with a paneling as ll which closes the rear face thereof. It is further provided with a cross bar as 12 which is located upwardly at a suitable distance from the lower end of t-he frame so that it acts as a stop engaging the upper surface of the inner end of the table top 2 when the latter is swung into lowered position or that of use.
The jambs l in the lower portion of their inner faces are each provided with a vertically extending groove 3 which at its upper end is provided with a forward extension situated to receive the laterally project-ing pin or roller as 2O carried at each side of the table tcp and at the inner end thereof. This slot has an enlargement 8O at its lower end extending forwardly. This slot on one of the stiles is provided with a channel '3l which extends to the front edge of the jamb. Thisis necessary only for the jamb at one side of the frame. The jainb at the other side of the frame may be lacking in this communicating channel 3l. The purpose of this communicatingl channel 3l is to facilitate placing the table top in position after the frame has been completely assembled.
The grooves which receive the pivot and guide rollers 2O of the table are preferably provided with a metal lining. One of the metal troughs used is shown in Figure et. This trough 5 is formed from a plate of rolled metal and has side walls and 5l spaced to accommodate the guide roller 20. The side wall 5l near the lower end of the trough is separated from the main body and bent outward to form the curve 52 and at the other end is similarly cut to form the side extending loop Each of these cutaway flanges'is enough longer than the main body to properly line the lateral extensions. It is secured in place by screws or nails.
The table top 2 may be of any suitaliile character of construction. As illustrated in Figure 3 this is constructed by providing stiles 21 and the panel 22 which connects the st-iles 21 and the end pieces thereof, the construction being analogous to that of a door except that the panelportion is at one side of the thickness.
The top is provided near its inner end with a metal fixture 413 which is provided with the lateral projection 20, preferably a roller` which fits in the groove 3 and the forward extension thereof. Two brace rods 4 are provided, one for each side of the table. The upper ends of each of these rods are pivotcd to the table by pins, as 40, which are carried by plates ll fixed to and preferablv recessed into the edges of thel table and near the marginal edge of the table. The pivot jambs 1 are also provided with a rabbet 13.

The pivot pin 42 may thus be supported by both ends in the jambV and said bar 14.
The posit-ion of the table top when stored is indicated .by lElledottedline which line representsthe surface of the table top which isup when swung down. in the position of use and which is to the rear when it is stored. At the upper end of the space within the frame-stops as 6 are provided. These may be simple corner pieces inserted in the frame. The casing thusy constructed maybe secured in place by the use of a lag 'screwV 7' passing through theupper and lower cross bars 10 and other lag screws TO which pass through the intermediate. cross bar 12. All of these, or such of them as may be desirednay be used.. The forward enlargement 52 of the slot 3 at its lower end permits forward bodily movement of the table top when it is folded up thereby making possible keeping the body of the slot toward the rear enough to accommodate the rabbets 13 in the saine ,j plane therewith and yet retain enough thickness of wood between said rabbet and the 'slot 3. The table fulcrums on the bar 12 so `that when its upper end is put. in place its lower end will be brought forward, thus making. its outerl face come truc with the. enclosing frame or cabinet.
This invention, as stated in the preliminary statement of invention, is applicable to tables, ironingv boards and other table-like structures. I therefore desire it understood that theduse of the word table rin the claim is intended toibe construed inits broad generic meaning to cover any tableelikey structure, of which an ironing board is an example.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
A folded table comprising a frame having side jambs each provided in the lower part of their inner faces with a vertical guide groove located towards the rear niargin thereof and having a forward extension at its upper endk and a forward enlargement. at itslower end, the latter enlargement having an inclined top wall, a table top adapted to iit within the fran'le, guiding pins laterally projecting from the inner end of the table top and fitting said grooves in the ,jambs, brace rods pivoted by their lower ends at the bottom outer edge of the inner faces of the jambs `andby their upper ends to the edges of the table top outwardly from its inner end, the inner faces of the jambsbeing rabbeted to receive said brace rods when the table is swung up, the frame havinga. cross bar connecting the side jalnbs at a level to serve as a stop engaging the upper surface of the top when swung down and recessed back from the front faces of the jambsto permit the Itop to fully enter between the side jalnbs.
