IMPROVEMENT IN BLUlNG-PACKAGES FOR LAUNDRY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,438, dated June 23, 1874; application filed May 9,1874.
To all 'whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. VAN LIER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful vImprovement in Bluing Package or Case, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the manner of putting up bluing used for laundry purposes; and consists in a perforated glass casing, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a vertical section ofthe casing which contains the bluing, the latter being conned in a bag, as usual. Fig. 2 is an end view of the case, showin g the perforations.

A is the ease, which is similar in form to a glass vial of any desired size, provided with a stopper, C, but having no neck, so that the bag B, containing the bluing, may be readily introduced. a represents perforations or holes in the bottom of the case. This case is made of glass, the stopper being in one end, and the holes a in the other end.
The manner of using the bluing is to immerse the lower end of the case A in the water, holding the upper part of the ease in the hand, and waving it back and forth. The bag of bluing becomes more or less saturated with the water which passes through the perforations a, and the solution escapes through the same holes when the case is raised.
Ordinarily, this laundry bluing is put up in bags and used directly therefrom but sometimes the bags are inclosed in tin boxes with perforated tops, or in wooden boxes, from which the bag of bluing is taken Whenever it is used. The tin box corrodes and is soon destroyed. It is disagreeable to use the wooden box as a receptacle for the bluing-bag, from which it must be returned after using. My package or case is non-corrosive, and the water may be sufficiently blued without soiling the fin gers. This glass oase is readily cleaned, and with proper care will last a life-time, while the cost will not exceed that of the wood or tin box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an article of manufacture, a glass bluing-bottle, A, having stopper at one end and apertures at the other. as shown and described, so that the same may be immersed in water and the blue used therefrom, in the manna?? specified. f
