SCALE-MASSAGE APPARATUS...
Application filed September 24, 1921. Serial No. 502,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK B. RYAN and CARL F. DOSCHER, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Short Hills, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, and White Plains, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scalp-Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scalp massage apparatus.
One of the objects of this invention is to produce a massage device for the scalp which will simultaneously enable the massage of the entire scalp including those portions thereof which cover the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital bones of the human cranium.
Another object of our invention is to produce a massage device which will initially contact with a relatively large area of the scalp and preferably covers a major portion thereof leaving a minoruneovered portion for movement so that a relatively slight movement of the device will massage .the skin-covering of the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital portions of the cranium at the same time.
Another object of our invention is to produce a scalp-massage device which will be in the form of a spherical or spheroidal segment and so shaped and proportioned in relation to the human cranium that the latter will guide the movement of the same backwardly and forwardly in an a'rcuate path and such movement will cause the simultaneous massaging of the skin covervention, we provide a massage helmet com-v prising a shell of rubber or similar elastic material embodylng substantially a convex or spherical parietal portion havlng an operating handle attached thereto and ada ted to initially cover the parietal portion 0 the cranium, a relatively short forwardly-projecting frontal portion of substantially similar shape merging with said pariental portion, temple portions at opposite sides merging with said frontal and cap portions and a. rear or occipital portion also of similar convexity projecting downwardly at the Opposite side of said portion and so proportioned and arranged in relation to the cap and temple portionsas to leave ear outout portions to prevent interference or contact with the ear during movement, said shell preferably having distributed over the inner concavesurface thereof a series of massage projections and preferably a series of isolated elastic rubber prongs orfingers adapted when the helmet is in place on the head to contact with the scalp or skin covering of the cranium and when the helmet is moved in an arcuate path about the cranium to contact with and massage substantially the entire scalp or skin covering of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and'occipital portions of the cranium.
lVith these andother objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangements of parts so combined as to co-act and cooperate with each other in the perfori'nance of the functions .and the accomplishment of the results here- -met being shown in section.
. Referring now to these drawings, 1 indicates a helmet which preferably.comprises .a soft or elastic rubber shell and is, as
shown in Fig. 2, adapted to cover and con tact with a major portion of the human scalp but to leave uncovered a minor portion of such scalp so as to enable a massage movement back and forth to effectively massage the entire scalp.
As illustrated, the said helmet is in the -form of a spheroidal segment so as to conform in shape with the human cranium and I to enable the guiding such human cranium of the shell or helmet in its massaging movement; The said shell 1 is composed of a spheroidal parietal portion 1 which is substantially centrally disposed and has an operatinghandle 2 attached thereto, a relatively short and forwardly projecting frontal portion of substantially similar spheroidal shape merging with said parietal portion, temple portions 1 projecting is prevented. The helmet or shell is provided on its inner surface with a series of massage pro ections which, as shown, are preferabl 1n the form of a series of isolated elastic ru )ber prongs 3 distributed over the entire inner surface of the various portions of the shell, so that when the shell is moved in a backwardly and forwardly massaging movement over the scalp these prongs or fingers will contact with all portions of the scalp and give a thorough massage thereto. The distance and arrangement of these prongs are preferably so proportioned as to cause .each prong upon a massaging movement to-cover a given scalp area so that the combined massaging contact of the entire series will during the movement of the device contact with and massage substantially the entire scalp or the skin covering of the parietal, frontal, temporal and occipital por-fi tions of the human cranium.
The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. I Having described our v invention, we claim V 1. In scalp massage apparatus, a massage r helmet comprising a shell of elastic rubber conforming inshape with a major portion of the scalp of the human cranium, and comprising a substantially spheroidal parietal portion having an operating handle attached to the outer side thereof, a relatively. short forwardly projecting frontal portion of substantially similar spheroidal shape merging with said parietal portion, a temple portion extending at opposite sides of said frontal portion and an occipital portion extending rearwardly from said parietal portion also of substantially similar shape, said rubber shell having distributed over its inner surface a series of massage projections adapted to contact with and massa 0 subs atively stantially the entire' scalp upon a re slight movementofthe said shell.
2. In scalp massage apparatus, a massage helmet comprising a shell of elastic rubber conforming in shape with a major portion of the scalp of the human cranium, and comprising a substantially spheroidal parietal portion having an operating handle attached to the outer side thereof, a relatively short forwardly projecting frontal portion of substantially similar spheroidal shape merging with said parietal portion, a temple portion extending at opposite sides of said frontal portion and an occipital portion extending rearwardly from said parietal portion also of substantially similar shape, said rubber shell having distributed over its inner surface a series of massage projections each comprising isolated elastic rubber prongs distributed on the inner surface of said shell and adapted to contaetwith and massage substantially the entire scalp upon a. relatively slight movement of the said shell.
3. In scalp massage apparatus, a massage helmet comprising a shell of elastic rubber conforming in shape with a major portion of the scalp of the human cranium, and comprising a substantially spheroidal parietal portion having an operating handle at tached to the outer side thereof, a relatively short forwardly projecting frontal portion of substantially similar spheroidal shape merging with said parietal portion, a term ple portion extending at opposite sides of said frontal portion and an oecipitalportion extending rearwardly from said parietal portion also of substantially similar shape,
said temple, parietal and occipital portions being proportioned and arranged' to provide cut-out ear ,portions intermediate the temple and occipital portions, said shell also having a series .of massage projections on its inner surface whereby the helmet will initially contact with a major portion of the human scalp and may in the operation of massaging the entire scalp be moved in a relatively short arcuate path over the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital portions without contact with the car.
In witness whereof, we have signed our names to the foregoing specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
