([ 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn B. MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rustic-Chair- Making Devices, of which the following is a specification.

It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a chair form, by means of which rustic chairs of different design can be quickly and conveniently made, certain parts of the form being adjustable to also permit of the variation in size of the chair made thereon.

More specifically stated, the invention includes an adjustable back piece which is mounted on a base utilized to support the legs of the chair, the back piece being capa ble of movement toward and away from a fixed part of the seat support, whereby chairs of different size and design, can be made, and also the inclination of the back with relation to the seat varied.

The nature and advantages'of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this application. like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and. wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the form showing certain parts of the chair associated therewith.

Figure 2 is a front elevation.

Figure 3 is a top plan view.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4:4t of Figure 3.

The form constituting the subject matter of the present invention includes a base 10 of elongated contour in plan and supported by uprights 11' adjacent the corners thereof. Reposing upon this base and arranged transversely thereof are spaced par allel strips 12 and 13 respectively, both of which projects beyond the opposed longitudinal edges of the platform, and each of which is formed with openings 14 adjacent the ends thereof. Also mounted upon this platform is the stationary part of the seat support, which part includes spaced up? rights 15 connected by a transverse member 16 from which rises pins 17 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. This seat support is arranged directly behind the trans verse strip 12, and is braced by diagonally disposed members 17 which are arranged between the strips 12 and 13 respectively and terminally secured to the uprights 15 and the base 10.

The back piece of the form consists of a pair of spaced members 18 which slightly converge toward their upper end, and these members are hingedly mounted upon the transverse strip 13 above referred to. These members are connected together adjacent their upper ends by a plurality of transverse strips 19 which are closely associated as clearly shown in Figure 2, and each of these latter mentioned strips is provided with an opening to receive an adjustable bolt 20 clearly illustrated in Figure 4;. Some of these bolts have their forward ends passed through clamping bars 21 and then offset as at 22 against one side of the bars to hold the parts associated, and these clamping bars are movable toward and away from the spaced members 18 by ad justing the bolts 20 through the openings in the cross strips 19. This is accomplished by rotating the nuts 23, one of which is threadedly associated with each bolt as shown in Figure 4. One of the bolts 20 terminates at its forward end to provide an eye 24-, and this eye receives a substantially Ushaped clamping bar 25 as shown in Figure 2. In addition to these clamps, the spacing members 18 of the form for the back of the chair is provided with trans verse openings to receive similar bolts 2?, each of which has associated therewith a nut 27 to efiect an adjustment of these bolts, the latter terminating at their forward ends to provide hook like extremities 28 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The component parts of the back of the chair are adapted to be clamped to this back piece, and subsequently secured to the seat of the chair indicated at 29. The seat 29 is not only supported upon the cross piece 16 above referred to, but is also supported by a cross piece 30 which is arranged transversely of and secured to the spaced memhere 18, and by reason of the fact that these members are mounted for hinged mo nt w h relation to-the base 1 it is manifest, that the cross piece 30 can be moved toward and away from the cross piece 1-6 to accoimnodate seats ofdilierent dimensions, and at the same time provide for the desired inclination of theback with relation to the seat. The back piece of the form is held fixed relative to the. base 1.0 subsequent to its adjustment, by means of the diagonally disposed supports 31 which are pivoted to the spaced members 18 of the back piece, andarranged to slide through divided loops32 which are formed by the terminal of strips--33 secured at one end of the base 10 as shown in Figure 3. The lower ends of the supports 31' are provided with spaced openings 34 any of which may be brought into alignment with the said loops incident to theadjustment of-the back piece, to accommodate a pintle or pin 35 which of course holds the back piece fixed in its adjusted position. For the purpose of holding theseat 29 on the cross piece 30 I make use'of a 10013136, the ends of whicliare twisted. in a manner to permit this loop to associate with these parts or re moved therefrom as the occasion may require.

In practice-the front legs of the chair indicated at 37 and the back legs of the chair indicated atBS areadapted t'olbe arranged between the runners 39 and nailed or otherwise secured thereto, with these legs projecting a slight.distance'beneath the runners to ;be received by theppenings 1.4 in the transverse strips 12 and 13 respectively which are mounted upon the platform 10. Thusthe runners and the various legs are supported on the form, and from an inspection of Figure 2 it will be notedtlrat the rear-legs 38 are of a length to form part of the back ofl the chair, and slightly converge toward their upper ends. It will be understood that the component partsof the back ofithe chair are first secure-d together in the manner described, after which theseat 29 'is arranged upon the ClOSSCQlGCB 16 ofithe fiXfiQl part of its support, and the :back .piece ot'the form subseque t y acent edge of theseat 29, which of course depends upon the size of the seat and the desired inclination of the back therefor.

The seat is formed with an opening to receive the loop 36 which of course holds the seat associated with the cross piece 30,.)Vl1ll8 the side portions of the main' part 390i the back isbeing nailed or otherwise secured to said seat. It the chair is to be provided with arm rests, the front legs 37 will be made of a size to extend an appreciable distance above the seat 39, and arm rests, not shown, will then be nailed upon the upperends of these front legs and the side members of thc main back piece- 39 of the chair. By reason of this invention, rustic chairs can he quickly and convenientlyconstructed. and. the design of the chair can be varied by adjusting the back piece as above described, and also by adding additional slats or back supports after the chair has been removed from the form.

lVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that 1 do not limit myself to what is herein shown and describeth and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scopeot what is claimed.

A chair form of the character described comprising a base, a seat support mounted thereon, a back support arranged ,upon the base means for supporting said back for pivotal movement toward and away from the scat support. a cooperating seat supporting element carried by the back support, and clamping devices mounted on the back support for clamping the component parts of the back thereto tor-the purpose specified.

2. A chair form of the character described comprising a base, a stationary seat support rising therefrom, a back support mounted upon the base for pivotal movement toward and away from the stationary seat sup port, a. movable seat supporting element carriedby the back support, means connecting the-back support with 'the base: and utilized. to hold the back support fixed relative to the base in any adjustable position, and clamping devices carried by the back support and holding the component parts of the back of the shah-associated therewith.

3. A chair torm oi the character described. comprising a base, spaced transverse strips arranged upon the base and projecting beyondthe opposed longitudinal edges'thereof, said strips having openingsadjacent the ends thereof, and adapted to receive the legs .of
