C'ORPORATION OF PENN- REGULATING VALVE.
Application filed June 30, 1924.
To all who-222. it may concern."
Be it known that I, WARD RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainne w and useful Improvements Regulating Valves, of which the followlng'is a si t ecification.
This invention relates to valves for compressors and in particular to an improved regulating valve and means for assembling it in position within the walls of the compressor.-
l iii object of the present invention is to provide a valve, preferably an intake valve, with means for properly holding its parts temporarily in assembled position or relation when the valve is being placed in position in the cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for temporarily securing the assembled parts of the valve to the cover plate so that the valve may be inserted in position within the cylinder wall and, after the cover plate has been. fastened in position, the temporary securing means may be withdrawn.
Another object of the invention is to provide the temporary securing means for the valve in the form of a threaded member adapted to enter one of the conduits for the regulating means for the compressor.
A further object of the invention is to provide guiding vanes on the cylinder walls to aid in positioning the assembled regulating valve in position.
-With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the features of construction and operation set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompai'iying drawing.
1n the accompanying drzuving annexed hereto and forming a part of this specification. 1 have shown my invention embodied in an intake regulating valve for a compressor but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a central sectional view of the assembled valve showing the means for temporarily retaining it in position, and
Serial No. 723,212.
Fig. 2 is a detail of the regulating valve showing the parts arranged for operation.
Briefly, and in its broadest aspect, my invention comprises the following principal parts: first, a compressor havinga valve opening therein second, a valve adapted to be positioned therein; third, regulating means for said compressor and adapted to actuate said valve; fourth, a cover plate for permanently retaining the regulating valve in positionj fifth, a threaded bolt adapted to pass through the cover plate and be removablysecured to a part of said valve.
Referring more in detail to the figures of the drawing, portions of a compressor cylinder are shown having a valve opening therein. This valve opening is provided with a seat 11 for the valve body member 12. The particular valve shown is an intake valve, the valve 13 being movable between the seat formed on the body member 12 and a retaining plate or ring 1% to admit air to the cylinder.
To retain the valve body member 12 in position during operation, a yoke member 15 is provided engaging the periphery of the body member 12. The yoke member 15 is held in position by a threaded member 16 passing through the cover plate 17. Preferably, also, the yoke member 15 is attached to the body member 12 by means of screws 15. The cover plate 17 may be securely fastened to the cylinder 10 as by means of screws shown at 18.
l/Vithin the valve body member 12 and yoke member 15 are the regulating means for retaining the valve 13 in its open position. These comprise a piston 18 movable within a small cylinder formed in the yoke member 15, and means in the form of fingers 19 moved by this piston to contact with the valve 13. To supply air to the cylinder to actuate the piston 18, the threaded member 16 is bored throughout its length.
Heretofore, difiiculty has been experienced in properly holding the assen'ibled valve in position when it is being placed in position in the cylinder. For this purpose, applicant provides means in a form of a threaded rod 20 for holding it temporarily to the cover plate 17. This rod 20 passes through the regulating fluid conduit provided in the threaded member 16 and enters a threaded hole 21 in the yoke member 15.
It will be seen from this construction that rod 20 before they are inserted in position 7 said plate and member temporarily but rigid- V in the cylinder Wall. S0 attached, they can be readily positioned by means of the cover plate 17. After fastening the cover plate 17 in place with the valve body member 12 somewhat retracted, the member 16 may be rotated to advance it against its seat '11. lVith the valve body member 152 advanced against its seat 11 and with the cover'plate 17 held in place, the rod 20 may be removed. The assembled regulating valve may then .be connected as shown in Fig. 2 with a source of regulating fluid through the connections 22. r
To further simplify inserting the assem bled valve in position, guiding vanes 23 may be provided suitably cast adjacent the opening in the cylinder 10. By these means, the assembled parts of the regulating valve may be accurately guided so that the body member 12 Will be properly positioned on its seat 11.
lVhat I claim is: 7
1. A valve for a compressor comprising in combination, a body member, a yoke member in contact therewith, a cover plate, and a threaded rod passing through said cover plate and entering said yoke member to hold ative position.
ly together, said rod being removable While said cover plate is in operative position.
2. A regulating valve for a compressor comprising in combination, a body member, a yoke member in contact therewith, compressor regulating means within said yoke member, a cover plate, means to supply fluid 3. Means for positioning 'a regulating valve 1n a compressor cylinder comprising in combination, a valve, a valve seat thereforin said cylinder, guiding vanes for said Valve formed integrally in and outstanding from the Walls of said cylinder adjacent said valve seat, regulating means for said compressor, a yoke member adapted to be attached to said valve, a cover plate, and means passing through a conduit for said regulating means for temporarily but rigidly attaching said yoke member and cover plate together, said means being removable while said cover plate is in operative position.
In testimony whereof, I hereto ailix my i signature.
WARD RAYMOND.
