CONTRACTING APIARATUS.
Application filed October 23, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. Bans, a citizen of the United States. residing at Milwaukee. in the county of hiiilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Contracting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to contracting apparatus.
Such contracting apparatus is particularly adapted to perimetrically contract a rotor winding to bring the conductors thereof into position in the rotor slots.
The contracting apparatus may, of course, be employed for various other purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide efficient, strong and durable contracting apparatus which may be economically constructed and operated.
Another object is to provide a contracting apparatus which will prevent buckling of the appliance being contracted.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.

The contracting apparatus, in general, comprises a plurality of contractors 1 so disposed as to enclose an appliance to be contracted, a carrier 2 for the contractors, and an actuator 3 to surround the contractors and move the same radially toward the center.
The contractors may take the form of plungers 1 slidaloly mounted in radially disposed guideways in the carrier. The plungers 1 have jaws 4 to engage the appliance to be contracted.
The carrier 2 may take the form of an inner or movable ring. Y
The guideways for the plungers may be formed by milling radial slots in the ring 2 and covering the open side thereof with Serial No. 595.429.
an annular plate 5 fastened to the ring 2 by screws 6 or other fastening means.
The actuator may take the form of an outer or stationary ring 3 provided with a conical or inclined inner periphery 7 to serve as a track on which the outer ends of the plungers 1 slide as the inner ring 1s forced down into the outer ring.
In order that the concentric relation between the spaced inner and outer rings may be maintained, a plurality of inwardly extending centering lugs 8 are fastened to the outer ring 3 by screws 9 or other fastening means The outer end of each plunger 1 is inclined so as to co-operate with the inclined track 7, the inclination of both being the same.
Each plunger 1 has at its inner end a jaw 4 to grip the appliance to be contracted.
The jaws 1 are disposed to form an enclosure shown as suhstantially circular.
Each plunger is bifurcated from its jaw or inner end for more than one-half of its length, so the two parts 10 and 11 of the jaw may yieldtoward each other as the plungers and jaws are forced toward the center.
The jaws 4 are provided with concave surfaces so as to it the cylindrical end rings of the circular surfaces of the appliances to he perimetrically shortened.
The outer edge of the jaw part 12 is provided with tongues 13 and grooves 1st which are arranged to mesh with alternately disposed grooves 15 and tongues 16 provided in the outer edge of the jaw part 17 of the adjacent plunger.
The outer ring 3 of the contracting apparatus is shown supported by ring 18 which may be made an integral part of the outer ring 3, if desired.
Pressure upon the inner ring 2 of the contracting apparatus may be applied through a yoke 19 having a plurality of depending legs 20, hearing on the inner ring.
-Whenever an end ring 21 of a rotor winding is to be contracted, the inner ring 2 of the contracting apparatus is raised or drawn out of the outer ring 3 and the jaws 2 are moved outwardly until the end ring will fit within the encircling jaws.
The end ring is then placed in position within the encircling jaws, and the inner stationary base of a power press shown) and to exert pressure on the inner 15" ring 2 lowered, so that the outer ends of the plungers engage the track 7.
Pressure is then exerted through the yoke 19 on the inner ring 2 to force the same down into the outer ring. As the inner ring is forced down, the decreasing diameter of the inclined track causes the jaws to be forced inwardly to shorten the perimcter of the ring ring. p v
A convenient way to force the inner ring down into the outer ring of the contracting apparatusis to place the outer ring on( the not ring by the movable plunger 22 of the press.
Should a power press having an upper stationary piston and a movable bed plate supported by a plunger which raises the same be employed, the inner ring of the contracting apparatus would'then be held stationary while the outer ring would be moved with respect thereto.
The tongue and groove connection between adjacent jaws allows relative circumferential movement therebetween and provides a substantially continuous circular bearing for the appliance to be contracted. -This tongue and groove connection furthermore prevents buckling of the appliance during the contracting thereof.
.The invention set forth herein is, of course, susceptible of other embodiments and adaptations.
The invention claimed is:
1. Contracting apparatus comprising a carrier, a plurality of circularly disposed contractors on said carrier, and an actuator for said contractors, said contractors having a plurality of integral inner ends to form circumferentially resiliently yielding contracting surfaces.
2. Contracting apparatus comprising a carrier, a plurality of circularly disposed contractors onv said carrier, and a single actuator for said contractors, adjacent con tractors having sliding tongue and groove engagement.
3. Contracting apparatus comprising a carrier, a plurality of circularly disposed contractors on said carrier, and an actuator for said contractors, sald contractors having a plurality of integral inner ends toform circumferentially resiliently yielding contracting surfaces, the adjacent contractors havingsli-ding tongue and groove engagement.
Contracting apparatus comprising relatively movable inner and outer concentric rings,'-the outer ring having a conical inner ahead on the inner end ofeach contractor, and a tongue and a groove on said head, said tongues and grooves on the heads of adjacent contractors interengaging to form a substantially continuous circular bearing surface.
Contracting apparatus comprising relatively movable inner and outer rings, the outer ring having a track on the inner face thereof inclined toward the center, spacers to maintain concentric relation betwcen the inner and outer rings, and plurality of circularly disposed contractors carried by the inner ringand having the outer ends thereof inclined to correspond to the inclination of the track, the contractors being movable radially toward the center when either of the rings is moved axially toward the other. 7
6. Contracting apparatus comprising a carrier, a plurality of circularly disposed 1 contractors on the carrier, the inner end of each contractor being bifurcated to allow the parts thereof toyield toward each other and the outer face being inclined, theinner end faces of adjacent contractors having tongue and groove engagement with each other, and an actuator havingan inclined circular track to co-operate with-the inclined outer face of the contractors to move said contractors radially toward'the center when there is relative axial "mo'vementbet-ween the track and the carrier one toward the groove connections between adjacentcontractors. j V

Contracting apparatus having in combination relatively movable innerand outer concentric annular members, the outer member having on the inner face thereof a track inclined toward the center, a plurality of radially disposed plungers movably supported by the inner member, the outer end of each plunger being inclinedto' co-operate with the inclined track, the inner ends of the plungers being grooved to-form a substantially circular bearing surface and bifurcated to allow the parts thereof to yield toward one another, and slidable tongue and groove connections between adjacent V I contractors. respond 'tothe angle of; the conical face,

12. A contracting member for contracting apparatus having a plurality of ad'acent end pieces integrally joined to provide laterally resiliently yielding contracting surfaces, and having an end face inclined to receive a Wedging impulse from an actuating member.
