UNITED `siA'ri-ts PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. ]BARR, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASS-IGNOR TO 'EI-ILE LOUIS ALLIS COE? PANY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION 0F WISCONSIN.
CONTRACTING APPARATUS.
Application led November 18. 1922.
This invention relates to contracting apparatus.
The contracting apparatus is particularly adapted to perimetrically contract the end rings of a rotor winding, although it may be used for various other purposes.
An object of the invention is to provide a contracting apparatus for simultaneously contracting` the perimeter of both end rings of a rotor winding.
Another object is to provide acontracting apparatus wherein the carrier and the con tracting jaws are integrally formed.
Another object is to provide a contracting apparatus wherein the contracting` jaws are yieldingly connected with the carrier ment: ber.
Another object is to provide a contracting apparatus wherein the contracting' jaws and the carrier member are formed from a single tube.
Another object is to produce an etlicient, strong and 'durable contracting apparatus which may be economically constructed and operated. i l
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. i
The views of the drawings are:
Fig. 1 is an elevation partly in section ot the contracting apparatus with a rotor and its winding therein. Y
Fig. 2 is a plan on line 2-2 of Figujl showing the end ring and the contracting jaws before contraction.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the end ring and contracting jaws after contraction.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 there are two sets of contracting apparatus one for each end ring of the rotor winding'. j
Each set of contracting apparatus, in general, comprises a plurality of circularly disposed jaws l, an annular carrier 2 there-for, and an annular actuator 3 to surroundthe jaws and move the same radially `toward the center.
As the two sets of contracting apparatus are exactly alike,` the upper set only will `be described and the lower set will be indij members 4l and integral yielding` arms 7 Serial No. 601.861.
cated in the drawings by the .saine reference numerals with the addition of primes.
The jaws 1 are 'formed on the inner face oi' contracting members il, the outer faces et which are inclined to cti-operate with an inclined track 6 'formed en the inner face ot the annular actuator 3.
rlhe contractingl members 4f are integrally and yieldingly connected to the carrier 2 by yielding arms 7.
As illustrated. the carrier 2. contracting are formed from a single metal tube.
'After the metal tube hasbeen turned to malte ito't the proper shape and thiczncss, then a series of holes 8 are provided inside the carrier 2 and the tube is slit-ted from each hole 8 to the upper end oil the tube thus forming the contracting members l and connecting arms 7.
The winding may be applied to the rotor core 9 by inserting the conductors 10 thereof intothe rotor slots and joining the ends of the rings 11.
The conductors may be inserted int-o the rotor .slots in the manner shown in my copending applications, Serial Nos. 537,654, tiled February 18, 1922, and 605,228, filed December 6, 1922. or in any other desirable manner.
The apparatus described herein is particularly adapted to p-erimetrically bend or impress thev end rings 11 of the winding1 to `hold the conductors 10 thereof within the .slots of the rotor.
The rotor with the winding applied thereto is arranged inside the carriers 2 and 2 with a spacing ring 12 therebetween, and the actuators 3 and 3 are placed in position around the contracting members l and d.
Spacing rings of different lengths may be used to adapt the apparatus for windings of dilierent lengths.
Plugs or mandrels 13 and 1a are provided to limit the extent to which the end rings ot the windings are perimetrically contracted.
til)
The plug 13 has an annular shoulder 15 to abut an end of the rotor and space the plug therefrom.
The plug 14 has a similar shoulder 16 to serve the same purpose. Y
The Vplug 14 also has a flange 17 on which rests the contracting member 4.
The lower actuator 3 rests upon a plate 18, and a plate 19 is placed on top of the upper actuator 3.
A centering rod Y20 is surrounded by a helical spring 21 which supports the plug 14 and resilicntly holds the same in place.
The contracting apparatus with the rotor therein is placed upon the bed plate 22 of a power press and the plunger 23 thereof lowered into contact with the upper plate 19.
Pressure upon the upper plate 19 Vby means of the plunger 23 causes the actuator and carrier of each set of the contracting apparatus to move axially one toward the other' thereby causing the jaws to move inwardly and contract the perimeter of the end rings of the rotor winding. y
Before contraction the end rings are of the diameter and occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 2, while after contraction the end rings are of the diameter and occupy the f position illustrated in Figure 3. A
The helical spring 21 supports the lower plug 14 and allows the plug to move downwardly toward the plate 18 during the contracting operation.
lVhen pressure upon' the contracting apparatus is released the stored up energy in the helical spring 21 forces the plug 14 and all parts supported thereby upwardly so thatkthe same may be disassembled more readily.
The invention Vset forth herein is, of course, susceptible of various modifications and adaptations. Y
YAThe invention claimed is Y Y A1. Contracting apparatus having in combination an annular' carrier. a plurality of circularlyk disposed contracting members, yielding' members integrally connecting the contracting members to the carrier, each n contracting member having` a jaw on its inner face and having its outer face inclined, and an annular actuator to surround theV contracting members and having an .inclined trac-l: t-o co-operate with. the inclined `faces so as to move the jaws inwardly when the carrier and actuator are moved relatively one toward the other.
