To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON CI-IRISTENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in thecounty of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new i and useful Improvement in Packings, of which the fol lowing is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in packing, and more specially to that form of packing composed of two or more overlapping segments, such as is frequently used for packing the piston rods of locomotives.
The invention is here shown embodied in a form of packing comprising four crescent shaped segments, including two larger segments overlapping two smaller segments. In this form of packing, the overlapping edges of the larger segments, advance on the surface of the smaller segments, as the pack ing wears in use. The forward edges of the overlappingsegments are ordinarily tapered or wedge shaped. In the packing heretofore used, the sharp edges of the wedge shaped advancing ends of the ,overlapping segments frequently cut or dug into the overlapped segments as they advanced, thus preventing perfect co-operation of the various segments and often causing ridges in the overlapped segments resulting in steam leaks. One of the features of my invention is the provision of means for preventing such cutting by the advancing edges of the overlapping segments.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of the four segments comprising the unit packing showing the same in separated position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same fitted together, Fig. 3 is a View in side elevation in one of the smaller or overlapped segments, Fig. 4 is a view of the same in front elevation, Fig. 5 is a view in front elecation of another form of packing comprising three segments, showing such form of packing with my invention embodied therein, and Fig. 6 is a similar view in top plan.
As shown in the drawings, the unit packing comprises two smaller segments 10, 10 which are overlapped by two larger segments 11, 11. The larger segments have pockets or recesses 12 of uniform curvature or conforming to the section of a cone or sphere and the smaller segments fit in said recesses. iVhen the-four segments are in position for use as shown in Fig. 2, the packing presents interiorly a substantial continuous wall and exteriorly is partly cylindrical and partly conical in form.
It will be noted that the edges of the ends of the overlapping or larger segments 11 as indicated by 15, are wedge shaped, forming a rather sharp edge. In use, as the segments of the packing wear, and readjust themselves in the packing box the edges 15 of the overlappin segments advance over the surfaces of tie overlapped segments 10. In order to prevent cutting of the segments 10 by such advance of the edgeslf) over their surface the segments 10 are provided with recesses 16 between the edges 15 of the larger segments. These recesses 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, cover both the cylindrical and conical part of the segments 10 and are bounded by the shoulders 17. These shoulders 17 lie substantially in registry with the edges 15 of the segments 11, when all four segments are new and in position as they lie in the packing box as shown in Fig. 2. Since the edges 15 of the segments 11 lie over these shoulders they are thus prevented from cutting or digging into the segments 10 as they advance. These shoulders hold them a slight distance above the surface of the recesses 16 and thus effectually prevent cutting or digging.
The form of packing embodying my invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 comprises three segments. Each of these segments is overlapped by an adjacent segment and overlaps the other adjacent segment. These three segments I have indicated by 11. The edges 15 of these segments are wedgeshaped, forming a rather shari edge. In use, as the segments of the packing wear, and readjust themselves in the packing box, the overlapping edges 15 advance over the surfaces 10. In order to prevent cutting of the segments by such advance of the edges, the surfaces 10 are provided with recesses 16 in advance of the edges 15. These recesses are terminated at one end by shoulders 17 lying substantially in registry with the edges 15, when all three segments are new and in position as they lie in the packing box as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The recesses 16 at their other ends are broi'lght out gradually until they coincide with the sun faces 10. Since the edges 15 lie over these Shoulders they are thus prevented from cutting o-r digging into the overlapped part of the segment as they advance.
lVhile I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A packing including an overlapped segment, and an overlapping segment having curved contacting surfaces, the end of the overlapping segment being wedge shaped and adapted to advance over the surface of the overlapped segment in use of the packing, the outer surface of the overlapped segment being recessed in front of said wedge shaped end of the overlapping segment whereby the end of the overlapping segment is prevented from cutting into the overlapped surface.
2. A packing including an overlapped segment, and an overlapping segment having curved contacting surfaces, the end of the overlapping segment being wedge shaped and adapted to advance over the sur face of the overlapped segment in use of the packing, the outer surface of the overlapped segment being provided with a shoulder substantially in registry with said wedge shaped use of the packing, the outer surfaces of the overlapped segments being recessed between said wedge shaped ends of the overlapping segments wherebythe end of the overlap ping segment is prevented from cutting into the overlapped surface. 2 l v 4. A packing comprising two overlapped segments and two overlapping segments, the ends of the overlapping, segments being wedge shaped and adapted to advance over the outer surfaces of the overlapped seg-' ments in use of the packing, the outer-sur faces of the overlapped segments being provided with shoulders substantially in regise try with the wedge shaped ends of the overlapping segments said outer surfaces beyond said shoulders being depressed below the contacted surfaces thereof to prevent said ends cutting into the overlapped surfaces.
