Description

T. C. HUGHES.
PISTON RING. APPLICATION FILED JUN-E 3.1915.

WITNESSES mamas.
I and is particularly TYRE o. nosnns, or worse,
PISTON-RING.
Application filed June a, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TYRE C. citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Piston-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in piston rings. It relates particularly to transversely divided piston rings.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel construction of piston ring of the transversely divided type, which will not permit leakage past it as it opens when the ring or cylinder becomes worn.
My invention is adapted for various uses, adapted for use in steam engines and automobile engines of the explosive type.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my 111- vention, 4
Figure 1 is a view looking at one edgeof the ring, the ring being in its open position,
Fig. 2 is a view looking t of the ring.
Fig. 8 is an edge view of the ring in the closed position and applied to a piston which is shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged the divided side 1 perspective. of the end portions of the ring, shown in, the open position.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. p s Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the difierent views.
The transversely divided ring 1 is provided at one end and in the edge 2 and outer periphery with a notch 3, preferably having a transversely beveled surface which extends from near the outer periphery of the ring obliquely to the edge 2. e i
The other end of the ring is provided with a projection 42 which is, preferably, provided with a transversely beveled surface 5 fitted to the beveled surface of the notch 3, the projection 4 being fitted to the notch 3 so as to fillthe same when the ring is mounted on the piston 6, shown in dotted ,lines inv Fig. 3, The edge and outer Specification of Letters Patent. i

projection 4 form extensions ofithe edge 2 and outer periphery A ofjthe-ring.
Theend of the ringhavingthg pmj I 4 is provided in the edge 7 and innerperiph- 1 eryjo'fjthe ring 1 withfa notch-.8, disposed in stepped relationship "to the projection, d, and which-has fitted to it'a projection 9 at theend of the'ring having'the notch? The notch8 is preferably "provided with; atransbeveled-surface. 10 onflthe' outersideof the.
beveled surface "of the versely b'eveled surface fitted to a similarly notch 8 extends fromfnear the middle of the inner periphe'ry obliquely' to the edge 7 of the ring. .c-The notch 8-;does'not extend to the outer periphery of the ring, and the cry of the ring. The projection 9 completely when thering is-fully closed, asshown-in Fig. 3, and'its outer edge and inner surface-[form extensions of the edge 7, of the rings Y By reason offlthe constructionfdescribed,
when the ring i's'mounted in the groove 11,
shown in 'dottejd lines in a cylinder, notshown,
in Fig. 3, and fitted 1 the projections 4 1 notch 3 doesnot extend to the inner periphand 9 will respectively overlapand fit recessed portions 3' and p e As the ring or piston wears, the ring will leakage as long may pass from Upon wear ofthe ring, or of onepslde of the ringv to the T y the cylinder, th 'ringfwill expand slightly,
and will not be a perfeot circle. cause the joint ofthe ring to scratch or score expansion of the ring, a small hole extends This would for th'ec fact that, upon the i from theinneritothe outer's'ide ofthe ring at the middle of its j oint, due to the employ. ment of the twobeveled notches. Oil is scraped Jfromthe cylinder .walland passes into this hole, from which itisagain thrown against the cylinder wall, thereby keeping the joint well oiled, so' that scoring or scratching' -of the cylinder is prevented. i
Ido not limit my. invention to the structure shown and described, as'modifications,
Within the scope, of the appended ciaim,
maybe madewithout departing from the I spirit of myiinvention.
What .I' claimiszi d j e I 3 Atransversely divided piston ring having ge mini inner pa and the em in m away mwm of the outer periphery and one eilga (1f the -1 and the other projection forming an extension of the other edge and inner psriphery of the ring.
In (my whereof I have signed my a to this specification.
