W. YUSKIEWICZ MOVABLE FIGURE TOY Filed April 5, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR Mlem Yask/ew/cz BY ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 13, 19 5.
WILEM YUSKIEWICZ, OF BROCKTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOVABLE FIGURE TOY.
Application filed April 3, 1924.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILEM Yusmnwroz, a citizen of Poland, residing at Brockton, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Penna, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Movable Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in movable figure toys in which objects, siinulating human beings, are caused to rotate in pairs about a common axis and also at certain intervals, have transmitted to them a raising and lowering movement, representative of a dance.
The main object of the invention is to providea mechanism which will cause the figures to move in the manner above indicated, thereby affording a pleasing divertisement for children.
Another purpose is to produce other fig ures, simulative of musicians, one being provided with a drum caused to be beaten by the mechanism in time with the action of the dancing figures.
A further aim is in the provision of means for actuating the several objects on the toy in rythm and harmony by the mere manual operation of turning a crank.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the device.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figiu'e 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3I) of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modified type of drive.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure 6 is a partial vertical sectional view, taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates in its entirety a raised rectangular frame or casing having a fixed cover plate ll containing a circular opening in which is disposed a level circular turntable 12, an open annular slot 13 intervening the adjacent edges.
Said turntable has rigidly fixed in its center the head 14 of a vertical spindle 16 ismrnalled in the bottom member of the eas- Serial No. 703,896.
ing 10 and also in a bracket 17, fixed on the bottom member and extending upward into the space within the casing.
Also fixed to the spindle 15 is a spur gear 18, meshing with a plurality of spaced pinions 19, between the upper sides of which and the lower surface of the turntable 12 is disposed a washer-like filler plate 20.
A similar but thicker plate 21 is disposed below the pinions 19 and gear 18, the plate resting on a portion of the bracket 17, into which the hub of the gear 18 is centered.
A horizontal shaft 22 extends outwardly at the end of the casing 10, where it is provided with a crank handle 23 by which it may be manually rotated.
The inner end of the shaft 22 is journalled in the bracket 17 and has fixed to it a bevel gear 2%, meshing with a mating gear 25 fixed on the vertical spindle 15, in such manner as to communicate motion to the gear 18 and turntable 12.
Fixed to the bracket 17 are rearwardly extending arms 26 which carry at their outer ends a sector shaped element 27 having a raised cam-like upper surface 28.
Mounted in the plate 20 and 21 in such manner as to pass through the pinions 19, are sleeves 2 their upper ends projecting to pass freely in the slot 13 and slidable in the sleeves are rods 30 having cross bars 31 at their upper ends.
The lower ends the rods make contact with the cam 28 as they are moved over it, causing the rods to rise and fall as they are rotated in a circular path.
.itt-achml to the cross bars 31 are figures 32 representing dancing couples. these figures having jointed lower extremities giving the appearance of feet touching the floor as the figures are rotated on the axes 30 and 15 and raised or lowered by the vertical movement of the rods Another spaced pair of figures 34: and 35 representing respectively a violin and drum player, are arranged on another part of the cover plate 11, the former being supported by a rod 36 and the latter by a like rod 37.
These rods are rotatably mounted in the casing and connected to them are arms 38 and 39 engaged by pivot-ed links 40 and 41, said links being formed on rings 42 and i3 encircling an eccentric 4 1 fixed on the shaft 22. I 4 0 The rod 37 passes upward the figure and is bent as to areas between legs 45 formed on one sideof the arm 47, the arm being pivoted at 48 to the figure.
Thus the arm is caused to move in such manner as to carry a drum stick 49 and beat the drum 50, the figure 34 being similarly actuated to cause the bow 51 to move over the strings of the violin 52.
In the modification shown in Figure'et, the spindle 15 is formed with a coarse screw or'wornr thread 55, the same being engaged by teeth on the edge of a drum 56 fast on the shaft 22 in placeof the bevel gears and in order to prevent turning of the shaft backward, a pawl 57 is arranged to intercept the teeth of aspur pinion 58 fined to the shaft adjacent the bracket in which the shaft is journalled.
Thus it Will' be seen that both the violin and drum will be caused to operate, simultaneously with the movement of the dancing couples.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
A toy comprising a casing, a turntable level with the upper surface thereof, there being a space between theadjacent edges, a vertical spindle on which the turntable is m0unted,.a horizontal driving shaft geared to said spindle, a plurality of coupled figures, stems supporting said figures, means for rotating said figures on the axes of their stems, means for :ausing said stems to travel circuitously in the mentioned annular slot, a cam fixed to make contact with the lower ends of said stems Wherebysaid coupled figures are raised intermittently, other figures having musical instruments and provided with movable-arms, an eccentric fixed on said driving'shaft and connections engaging said eccentric and passing through said other figures for actuating said arms to play the instruments during the movement of said coupled figures.
In Witness whereof I have aflixed my signature.
