DESK HINGE.
Application filed March 15, 1924. Serial No. 699,569.
YoaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE C. AMsnnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and btate of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to hinges for connecting the cover to the body of a desk, and for other similar uses.
One of the purposes of the invention is to provide a strong and simple hinge construction provided with a stop means for limiting the extent of opening movement of the desk cover, the construction being such that the hinge cannot cause injury to articles contained within the desk.
With the aforesaid and other purposes in view, the character of the invention will be best understood by reference to the following description of one good form thereof, shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. l is a perspective view of a desk body and cover provided with hinges embodying the invention, the hinges being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the desk showing the relation of the members of the hinge when the cover is in open position;
Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale is a perspective view of one of the hinges; and
' Fig. 4: is an edge view of one of the hinges.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of a desk having a top board 3 and a cover 5 which is connected to the body of the desk by a pair of hinges which are sim ilar in construction, and therefore, a description of one will suflice for both.
The hinge shown herein as one good form of the invention, comprises a member 7 which may be stamped or pressed from sheet metal. This member has a body 9 of general segmental form and has an attaching flange 11 provided with screw holes 13 through which screws 15 may be entered to secure the flange to the top board of the body. Projecting from one end of the body is a tongue 17 provided with screw holes 19 through which screws 21 may be entered to secure the tongue to one of the sides of the desk body.
To contribute to the secure connection of the member 7 with the desk body, said member may be formed to provide a pair of prongs 23 and 25 projecting transversely to the plane of the member. The prong 23 may desirably be substantially at the juncture of the tongue 17 with the body 9 of the member, and the prong 25 may desirably be at the end of the tongue.
It is desirable that the body 9 shall be spaced a slight distance from the inner face of a side of the desk. To accomplish this, in the present instance, the member is pro vided with lugs 27 and 29 at points spaced on the perimeter of the curved edge of the body, and the tongue 17 is offset somewhat from the plane of the body. Also, the prong 23 may project from a lug 31 which may assist in holding the member in spaced relation with respect to the inner face of the side of the body.
Extending upward from the body adjacent the flange 11 is a projection 33 adapted to occupy a kerf cut in the top board 3.
The hinge also comprises a member 35 which may be stamped or pressed from sheet metal. This member has a flange 37 provided with holes 39 through which screws 41 may be entered for securing the member to the desk cover. Extending from the member adjacent the flange 37 is a projection 43, and the projections 33 and %3 have registering holes through which a rivet 45 may be entered.
To limit the opening movement of the cover, the member 35 may have a portion 47, in the present instance, formed to provide a hook 49 adapted to engage the lug 31 as a stop when the cover is in open position, as will be noted in Fig. 2. The portion 47 of the member 35 extends into the space be tween the body 9 and the inner face of the side of the desk, and the body 9 is so coustructed and arranged that the outer end of the portion 47 does not project beyond the curved perimeter of the body when the cover is rocked through open or closed position. As a consequence, the body 9 serves as a shield to protect the portion 47 of the member 35 from engagement with articles in the desk, and there is no possibility of injuring the same.
In opening the cover of the desk, the hook 49 is liable to come into contact with the stop lug 31 with a sharp blow, but the prongs 23 and 25 will effectively resist such ablow and-prevent the screws 21 in the tongue 17 from becoming loosened. Since 7 thepportion 47 of the cover member of the hinge is confined between the body 9 and the inner face of the side of the desk, any tendency of lateral movements of the cover member 35 will be effectively resisted.
By my invention there is provided a strong, simple hinge construction which is cheap" to manufacture, and is effective in operation.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown, and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of theappended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A desk hinge comprising a pair of pivotally connected members having provision for'secnring the same to the body and cover respectively of the desk, the body member having provision for spacing the same slightly from a side of the desk, a stop, and a pair of prongs adjacent the stop adapted to be, driven into the side of the desk, and the cover member having a. portion adapted to swing in the space between the bodymembei and the side of the desk and come into engagement with the stop to ;limit opening movement of the cover.
2. desk hin e comprising a plate of general segmental form having parts provided with screw holes for receiving screws for securing the plate to the body of the desk, and elements projecting laterally from the plate for spacing the latter slightly from the side of the desk, a member having holes for receiving screwsfor secnring'the same to the cover of the desk, and a portion adapted to swing in the space between the segmental plate and the side of the desk and come into engagement with a part of the plate as a stop, and projections extending from the plate and member provided with means pivotallyconnecting the same,
3. A desk hinge coinprisingaqplate ot general segn'iental torm provided with screw holes for receiving screws for securing the 7 plate. to the body of the desk, said platebe i'ng adapted for location to leave a slight space between the plate and the inner face i of side of the desk, and a member pivotally connected to said plate and having holes for receiving screws for securing the memher to the cover of the ClBSk SD lCl member having a portion projecting down along the plate at the side of the plate adapted 'to face the inner face of the side of the' desk said member from engaging orinjnring articles in the desk.
