COVER PLATE FOR PLUG REGEPTACLES.
Application filed August 19, 1919. Serial No. 318,478.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WVILBERT L. BABCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cover Plates for Plug Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to cover plates for plug receptacles and has for its object to provide a cover plate stamped up from thin sheet metal which will be attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture and satisfactory in operation.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 shows a face view of the same in perspective Fig. 2 shows a vertical section through the center thereof;
Fig. 3 shows a detail of the base portion of the cover with the door shown in dotted lines;
Fig. shows in detail the hinged connection between the plate and door, and
Fig. 5 shows a portion of the plate with the door partially open.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is a base plate struck up from thin sheet brass, having the ordinary holes 2--2 for screws securing it in place. At the center of this base plate is a punched opening 3 having at its upper end a main angular extension having straight parallel sides a between which there is a depending projection 5 having straight parallel sides and bent around as at 6 to form one knuckle of a hinge connection on each side of which the opening has small extensions having parallel straight sides. one side of each small extension being in line with a side of the main extension. At the lower end of the opening 3 is a depressed portion extending on both sides of a line corresponding to a continuation of the periphery of the opening adjacent to the base thereofso as to form a lug 7, which is depressed inwardly so as to lie outside the plane of the adjacent metal of the plate 1 so as to form a stop for the door portion and a recess adjacent to the door.
8 is the door portion shaped so as to fit within the opening 3 and overlie the lug 7 and provided with an upward parallel-sided projection 9 from which extend two other par,- allel-sided projections 10 which are turned over as at 11 so as to form knuckles cooperating with the knuckle 6. 12 is a straight pin passing through the knuckles 6 and 11 so as to hold the door portionS to the base portion 1. The outer surface of the door portion 8 when closed is flush with the outer surface of the base portion 1 and in opening and closing the straight sides L-d of the opening in the plate engaging the corresponding straight sides upon the door 8 guide the door 8 in its opening and closing movements and result in its proper alinement and action. The closing movement of the door 8 is limited by the lug 7 and the door is lifted by inserting. the finger in the exposed recess formed adjacent to the depressed lug 7. The plate 1 is provided with a rearwardly extending peripheral flange 13, which is spaced away from the knuckles 11 a distance equal to the length of the pin 12 so that the pin can be inserted after the knuckles 6 and 11 are formed.
By constructing a Cover plate in the man-' ner above described, a satisfactory cover plate can be manufactured of sheet brass which will be durable and efficient.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: 1. A cover plate for plug receptacles of the type described comprising a base plate struck up from sheet metal having an opening therein, and a door of sheet metal closely "fitting said opening having its outer face flush with the outer face of the base plate, said base plate and door having a hinged connection having its ends spaced from the edges of the base plate and its outer face flush with the outer faces of the base plate and door and comprising two spaced projections formed integral with said door and bent over to form two of the knuckles of the hinged connection, and a projection formed integral with the base plate and bent over to form the other knuckle of the hinged conflush with the outer face of the base plate, said base plate and door having a hinged connection' and said base plate having a depressed projecting portion integral there with to serve as a stop for the door and to provide a depressionv inlwhichthe finger of the-user may beinserted tov open the door.
