CURLING IRON.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, Jnnnon E. LAwToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Curling irons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hail-curling irons and has for an object the provision of an electrically heated iron by means of which a Marcel wave may be easily and conveniently produced. More specifically stated, the invention aims to provide an iron, the jaws of which are transversely curved to produce a wave in one direction and are also capable of relative longitudinal movement to produce a wave in another direction.

Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the iron as shown comprises a pair of relatively movable members, one of said members comprising a hollow shank 10, a handle 11 and a jaw 12, the latter being hereinafter referred to as the rigid jaw in that it is rigid with the handle 11 and the latter is the main handle of the device.

This rigid jaw is transversely curved as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and provides a longitudinally disposed seat 13 in one face thereof and spaced channels 14 in the opposite face, the said channels accommodating tubular casings 15 which are suitably secured in place and which contain electric heating elements 16. may be supplied to the heating elements 16 through conductors 17 which extend through the tubular shank 10 and through the handle 11 for connection with a suitable source of current. The jaw 12 is provided upon opposite sides of the seat 13 with a row of spaced teeth 18 between which a quantity of hair is placed so that the hair will lie across the seat 13.

The other upper edge of the device comprises a shank 19 which carries at one end a handle 20 and at its opposite enda jaw 21 and as this member is mounted for pivotal and longitudinal movement. the jaw 21 will be hereinafter referred to as the relatively movable jaw. This jaw 21 is transversely curved and is adapted to be positioned within the seat 13 and is provided with a row of spaced teeth 22, these teeth as well as the teeth 18 being preferably struck from the material of which the jaws are made. The teeth 22 are disposed in an opposite direction from the teeth 18 and the hair which is positioned across the seat 13 as previously mentioned will be engaged by the teeth 22 when the jaws are closed.

For the purpose of connecting the two members of the device so as to permit of the aforesaid pivotal and longitudinal movement, the shank 10 has pivotally mounted thereon as shown at 23 a lever 24, while pivotally connected to this lever 24 as shown at 25 is an ear or lug 26 which extends from the shank 19 of the relatively movable jaw. The opposite end of the lever 24 is shaped to provide a trigger 27.

The shanks 10 and 19 are connected by springs 28 which are disposed upon opposite sides of the said shank.

After the device has become sufficiently heated, a quantity of hair is placed across the seat provided in the rigid jaw 12 and the jaw 21 is permitted to close upon this hair, the springs 28 acting to hold the jaws in closed position. By pulling the trigger 27 with one finger of the hand which grasps the handle 11, the jaw 21 will be moved forward to the position shown in Figure 6 of the drawings, the springs 28 holding the jaws closed sufficiently tightto prevent reverse movement of the jaw 21. The shape of the seat 13 and of the jaw 21 provides a wave in the hair in one direction, while a forward movement of the jaw 21 due to the teeth 18 and 22 will provide a Wave in another direction so that the Marcel wave effected is produced. By pressing inwardly upon the handle 20, the jaws may be separated as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 6 and the hair released, the operation being then repeated.

The invention is susceptible to various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.

' Having described the invention what is claimed is A curling iron of the character described comprising rigid and manipulating jaws respectively, a movable handle for said jaws, the handle being rigid for receiving therein conducting means for heating the rigid jaw, said jaw being transversely curved and provides a longitudinally disposed seat ate of its length to the rigid aw handle and its upper portion pivoted to the lug of the movable jaw handle, the lower portion of said leverv providing fingerhold and spring retractile means connected to both the handles.
