Be it lznown that I, PHILIP F. lVAonN- BRENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parlin, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey have invented new and useful Improvements in Grips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a rope or cable holding device, the general object of the inigentio-n being. to provide means for en gaging one end of a rope orcable in such a manner that the cable can be easily re leased from the device and the slack taken from the cable by simply pulling the cable through the device.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which .Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use.

Figure 2 is a sectional view through the device shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the grip and its hook.

Figure l is a bottom plan view of the casing.

In these views 1 indicates a casing which is substantially egg-shaped and has an opening 2 at each end thereof and a large opening 3 in its center. The casing is also provided with a slot l which is in communication with the opening 3 and which has a reduced inner part 5, the shoulders 6 being formed at the juncture of the part 5 of the part a. A rope or cable 7 may be secured to a supporting post or the like (not shown) and this rope or cable has its end passing through the opening 2 in the large end of the casing and is knotted as indicated at 8, so that the casing will be supported by the rope or cable. The rope or cable which is to be supported by the device is passed through the opening 2 in the small end thereof and out through the opening 3, a part oi the cable resting against shoulders 6 which extend inwardly 1924. The invention further includes a gripping element which comprises a block 9, while connected to this block is a hook 10.. the shank of which is provided with a squared portion 11 which passes through the reduced inner part 5 of the slot. The squared part ll oi the shank hook 10 is relatively wideso as to provide a wide bear-mg face upon oppositesides thereof, while the block 9 extends at an obtuse angle with respect to the shank of the hook and is provided with rounded or curved shoulders 9. These shoulders extend laterally upon opposite sides of the squared portion 11 and engage and rock upon the inner wall of the casing adjacent the reduced inner part 5 of the slot. The teeth 12 of the block will engage a cable A and will press the same against the small part of the small end of the casing and thus prevent the cable A from being pulled through the casing as will be seen in Figure 2. WVhen the cable A is to be slackened it is only necessary to tilt the hook 10 in the slot 5 so as to free the cable from the teeth of the block 9. The cable may then. be pulled from the casing to the desired extent. lVhen the cable is to be stretched again it is only necessary to pull on the part A of the cable which depends from the casing, until the cable is stretched. whereupon the hook will automatically grip the cable so that when the latter is released the slack will be taken up and the cable will be held by pressure of the block which. forces it against the wall of the casing and will act to hold it in stretched condition. The loose end oi the cable can be looped and hung on the hook as shown in Figures 1 and 2. If desired a pin may be passed through the casing above the reduced end 5 of the slot in substitution for the lugs 6.

This device may be used to tighten and loosen a line with ease and will hold better than an ordinary knot. It will also render it unnecessary to cut a line if it is too long as it will grip and hold at any point. While it is primarily intended for holding clothes lines, it will of course be understood that it is capable of many other uses.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall Within the scope of the appended claimS. v

Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a substantially egg-shaped casing having an opening in each end and a large hole intermediate its ends With a slot in connnunication with the large opening, a supporting cable extending through the opening in the large end and knotted within the casing, a cable passing through the opening in the small end and depending through the opening inthe body, a toothed gripping block in the small end of the casing arranged to engage the cable and a hook part connected with the block and extending through the slot.

A device of the class described comprising a casing inving an opening in each end thereof and an opening intermediate its ends, the last mentioned opening being provided with an elongated reduced extension, a cable extending into the casing and a gripping member extending into the casing for engagement with the cable, said member including a block, gripping teeth at one end of the block, a relatively narrow shank extending from the opposite end of the block through the restricted extension of the slot, said shank extending at an obtuse angle With respect to the block,
