TEMPORARY BINDER.

Be it known that I, GUs'rAvE I-I. RASMU- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Astoria, Long Island, in the county of Queens and "State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to devices for temporarily or permanently binding or filing in orderly arrangement, loose sheets, pages, signatures, pamphlets, papers, photographs or other like subjects, which it is desired to preserve in convenient form for ready reference as they accumulate, or to file in bulk.

' One object of the present invention is the production-of binders of the character indicated, wherein are combined to a marked degree, simplicity of construction, durability and efliciency.

A further object is the production of novel binding mechanism equally well adapted for use in conjunction with flexible one-piece covers, or the more usual double covers of either rigid or flexible character.

Another object is the production of a suitable follower or adjustable compressor plate for use in conjunction with the binder mechanism. V A further object is the production of binding posts of relatively wide and flat form, designed, arranged and adapted to pass through and retain pages thereon in accurate alinement, together with looking rods, detachably engaging both ends of said posts, and themselves removably mounted in hingeloops carried by the binder back, or a subback secured therein.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention will now be particularly described, and hereinafter pointed out in the claims following.

In the accompanying 'drawings which form party of this application for letters patcut and whereon like characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a temporary binder embodying the leading features of my inyention, in this instance exemplified by drivers and back of unitary structure and flexible form;

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view upon a relatively enlarged scale, showing the binder-back, binding mechanism carried thereby, and a fragment of the front and back covers;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective showing one end of the binder-base or body detached, with its integral side loops for receiving suitable locking rods; and

F1gure 4 is a detached View in side elevat1on of one flat curved binding post.

Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates .a flexible binder-body, base or back-strip, of unitary structure, having corresponding and parallel rod-receiving loops 2, 2, near opposite edges thereof, and extending from top to bottom of the structure. The flexible backstrip 1 is looped upon itself near both edges as at 2, 2, the base of both loops being stitched through horizontally as clearly shown by Figs. 2 and 3, leaving upon the outside of each loop 2 a narrow horizontal flange by means of which the said flexible back strip, including its loops 2, 2, is finally stitched into the binder back 7 by means of lines of stitches 8, 8, best shown by Fig. 2.

At suitable point-s each of the said loops 2, 2 is broken by upper and lower oppositely disposed recesses 3, 3, arranged and adapted to receive the ends of two flat and curved binding posts 4, 4, upon which latter the contents of the binder may be filed. These posts 4, 4, in turn are removably secured in the operative position indicated by Figure 1, through agency of suitable removable locking- rods 5 and 5, adapted to be snugly sheathed within the side loops 2, 2, and thus to intersect openings (3, 6, in their respective.

After the aforesaid binding elements 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 have been assembled as described, the binder-body or back-strip 1 is secured to the binder back 7 by means of marginal stitches 8 at its top, bottom and sides, as best shown by Figure 1, immediately adjacent the usual front and back covers 9 and 10 respectively of the structure which covers may be either flexible. as shown, or rigid, according to special requirements. 1

In any event, however, whether flexible or rigid covers are employed, the back 7 is always maintained in proper form because of the structural rigidity afforded bythe side rods 5, 5, and their connecting posts 4, 4.

The foregoing being a description of my invention in one practical form of embodiment, itsuse and operation are so self-evident as to rendera more detailed description of operation unnecessary. It may be noted however, that various changes in, and modifications of the arrangement, construction "or proportion of parts may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, and to all such I lay claim so long as they are capable of accomplishing substantially the same re sults by substantially the same means.

The term binder back appearing in the foregoing description, and in the claims following, is intended to indicate that portion (7) of the structure, either flexible or rigid, which connects the front and back covers 9 and 10, respectively, usually by hinge joints; and likewise the term back-strip will be understood to mean that flexible and pliable strip of material 1 provided with the rodreceiving loops 2, 2, adapted to be readily stitched, glued or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the binder back 7 as shown.

Having thus described my inyent-ion what I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a temporary binder the combination with a flexible back-strip, of flexible rod receiving loops at opposite sides of said backstrip provlded with oppositely disposed notches formed in said loops, binding posts adapted to enter said notches, and a IGIDOV". able locking rod within each of said loops arranged and adapted to engage and removably retain in operative relation the binding posts aforesaid.

4. In a temporary binder the combination with a, binder back and suitable covers hinged thereto, of flexible rod-receiving loops at opposite sides of the binder back provided with oppositely disposed notches insaid rod-receiving loops, binding posts adapted to enter said notches, and a removable locking rod within each of said loops arranged and adapted to engage the binding posts aforesaid. 5. In a temporary-binder the combination with a binder back and covers hinged thereto in a unitary structure, of flexible rod-receiving loops at opposite sides of the binder back provlded with oppositely disposed notches in said loops, binding posts adapted to enter said notches, and a removable locking rod within each of said loops arranged and adapted to engage and removably retain in operative relation the binding posts aforesaid.

6. In a temporary binder the combination with a suitable back and covers hinged thereto, of flexible rod-receiving loops at opposite sides of the binder back provided with oppositely disposed notches in said rod-receiving loops, binding posts adapted to enter said notches, a removable locking rod within each of said loops arranged and adapted to engage the binding posts, and a compressor plate adjustably mounted upon said 7.
