E. 5. BROWN CARRTER Original Filed am 1921 Fill Patented Jan. 6, 1925.
EG'BERT S. BROWN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
alumina.
Application filed January 3, 1921, Serial No. 434,846. Renewed June 29, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EGBERT S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriers.
More particularly the invention relates to carriers embodying traction means for translating goods, wares and merchandise.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: to produce a. device of the character mentioned which will embody a loop formed principally from an element possessing inherent flexibility by virtue of which the loop may be decreased or increased in size according as it is subjected to or relieved from the weight of the thing to be translated; to produce a simple and thoroughly eflicient device which embodies parts which automatically grip and release a thing; to provide means for limiting the said loop to a predetermined size; to form the said loop with relatively different degrees of flexibility so as to facilitate the decrease and increase thereof. WVith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular provision and con struction of parts hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the device of the present invention in use.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. 7 Figure 3 is a transverse detail sectiona view taken on the line 33, Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing for the details of construction of the device of the present invention it will be manifest that, the same includes, principally, an element 10 having connected thereto at one end, traction means 11, and a connector 12 at the opposite end thereof. The element 10 is composite in nature and consists of a strand of inelastic but flexible material 13, and a plurality of of volute memsubstantially two-thirds the length of member 14; and the member 16 is substantially one-third the length of member 15. When to surround a portion of the element. The
The end of the element 10 to which the part 12 is connected is relatively stiff, in-
asmuch as the saidend, cross-sectionally,
consists of the strand l3, and the three members 141', 15 and 16. Under such arrangement the loop" may be quickly decreased and qu ckly increased to its normal size from the decreased size. i A
The connector 12 embodies jaws 20, 20,
which, when the loop is reduced to a carrying condition, grip the thing to be carried.
The end 21 of the member 16 serves as a 1 stop. The said end engages the jaws 20, 20, and thus limits the reduction of the loop to a predetermined size, and prevents unnecessary strain from the weight of the thing be ing carried from destroying the flexibility of the element.
The traction means 11 consists of a part 22 which supports a grooved wheel 23. op erable over a track. The traction means 11 may be dispensed with if desired. The traction means 11 is useful when things are to be translated from one point to another, whereas, without the traction means 11, the device may be used for hanging things such as bananas on the spike.
The device of the present invention is highly efiective for translating bananas on the spike or stem. In practice, the upper end of the stem is extended or projected into the loop formed; By allowing the weight of the stem and the fruit thereon to play against the bight of the loop, the same will be quickly decreased or reduced in size until the jaws 20, 20, grip the said stem. The grip is most effective and allows the ba nanas to be readily translated to any desired place. When the device is relieved of the Weight of the fruit, the inherentvfiexibility; olt' the loop, causes the ;loop to automatlcally;
enlarge itself for the ready removal of the.
fruit as Will be understood.
It is to be understood that no-limitationslare made to the precise details of construe; H
tion disclosed, but that changes, alterations.
and modifications Within tl1e. scope ,of, tl e claims may be resorted to When they are deemed desirable. zandvnecessary,
What'is claimed is;
1. A, device as. characterized embodyingg arr-element formed intoaa loop, \th,e said ele ment comprising a plurality of telescopi-,
cally arranged tvolute memb'ers being flexible to allow the decreaseand subsequent au tomatic increase oftion-means.
2. ,Ai device, as; characterized embodying a loop; 'means for... holding, the element in loop formation, the said element compr s ng a plurality oftelescopically arranged volu te members being flexible, the said means al-v lowing the loop to be decreased andsubse= quently automatically increased under; the action of the flexibility of the said element,
4:. A, device as; characterized embodying the :sa idloop andl tracanelement formed into a loop, the said element; comprising a non-elastic flexible strand; and volute flexible members surrounding the strand in telescopic relation.
5.- A" device as characterized comprising traction means, a composite element includplurality of volute members of varying degrees, of flexibility connected to said means'and means for maintaining the element in looped formation.
6. A deyice was characterized comprising traction means, a composite flexible element adapted to beformed into a loop connected to saidmeans, and means. including spaced plates. and guidemembers for maintaining the element in loopeditormationr 7. A device .as characterized comprising traction means, a composite flexible. element adaptedito be tormed into a loop connected to said, means, -means for maintaining the element in loopedformation, andmeans for limiting theureduction of the loop to a predetermined size.
8. A device as characterized comprising traction means, a composite flexible elementadapted to beformed into a loop connected to said; means, slidable means including jaws forn maintaining the elementin looped formation and a stop on said element which coacts fwith said jawsfor-limiting the reductiO 1 of the loop to a predetermined size.
In testimony whereof I hereby afiiX my signature.
