Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOHELLKOPF, OF TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVE MENT IN DERRICKS FOR PUMPING AND BORING OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,176, dated June 16,1874; application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ScHELLKoPF, of Tidioute, in the county of \Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Rig for Boring and Pumping Oil- \Vells, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved rig for boring and pumping oilwells, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to construct for boring and pumping oil-wells an improved rig, which is made up of lighter timber, dispensing with the use of the heavy timber required at present for the band-wheel blocks, samsons post, and walkingbeam, and admitting that the rig may be taken apart, put up, and transported from place to place with greater facility, and a saving of timber, time, and labor.
My invention consists in constructing the band-wheel blocks, and samsons post, and walking-beam of oil-well rig of lighter timber, with braces and cross-bolts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a part of the foundation, consisting of strong lateral pieces with central notches, into which the mud-sill B is firmly keyed by suitable wedges after its parts have been spliced together. The bandwheel blocks 0 are supported on lateral pieces Z), keyed to the mud-sill B, an intermediate piece, I), being constructed instead of solid pieces of longitudinal top and bottom pieces (I, which are rigidly connected by interlocking diagonal braces e and strong vertical rods f, requiring but half the timber and saving a great amount of hard labor in putting them up and in removing them. The samsons post- Dis constructed of two strong pieces, E, in place of the single solid one, which are spliced into the mud-sill and placed under suitable in= clination, to be connected at the required height by a top piece, E, with side bearings E cast in one piece therewith, for the shaft of the walking-beam. The top piece E is firmly connected to the mud-sill by strong small rods g and screw-link g, the braces E light timber, with'curved longitudinal top and bottom pieces l, diagonally interlocking and diminishing braces m, and vertical stiffening rods or bolts n, as shown in Fig. 1. The increased expense for the heavy timber hitherto used for the rig, which is getting scarcer every day, is in this manner dispensed with, and a rig just as good and strong as the old one produced, with less material and time, together with greater ease in handling during the putting up and .transporting of the same from one locality to another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved rig for boring and pumping oil-wells, consisting of the combination of the supporting cross-pieces and mud-sill with band-wheel blocks, samsons post, and walking-beam, supporting-braces, and stiffeningrods, substantially in the manner shown, and for the purpose described.
JOHN SOHELLKOPF. Witnesses O. C. THOMPSON, J. D. FAGUNDUS.
