PUMPING AND DRILLING- MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed May 2, 1907. Serial No. 371,564.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. BLAISDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sackett, in the, county of Elk, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumping and Drilling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for drilling and pumping oil, gas, or Artesian wells, and it has for its object to provide a structure of marked simplicity embodying a saving in lumber and timber over the rigs ordinarily employed by eliminating all timber except such as is used in a common derrick.
The invention also aims to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pumping and drilling machine constructed in accordance with the present invention parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with parts in section, and Fig. 3
is a top plan view of an embodiment of the invention in which a tug wheel is employed for the bull rope, that operates the bull wheel. when the drilling is effected by means of a walking beam parts being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1 parts being shown in elevation.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates side sills of the supporting frame, upon which are carried transverse cross beams 2, the latter supporting an engine block 3 which serves as a foundation for the engine 4, the latter being of conventional form. At the forward end of the block 3 are alincd bearings 5 in which are journaled the ends of a crank shaft 6 carrying at one end thereof a balance wheel 7, and at its other end a fast pinion 8. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the crank arm 9 of the shaft 6 is connected by means of the pitman 10 with the cross head 11 of the engine. The side sills are extended rearwardly and support vertical parallel posts 12 braced at their upper ends by a transverse girder 13. A transverse shaft 14 is journaled in the posts 12 and carries at one end thereof a crank 15 by means of which it may be connected to a walking beam when the latter is used, instead of a pumping jack.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1., the shaft 14 carries a gear wheel 16 meshing with the pinion 8 by which it is driven, and at a distance from the gear wheel 16, a brake wheel 17 for cooperation with a conventional band brake (not shown). Bolted to each side of the brake wheels 17 are bearings plates 1.8 having hub flanges 19. The innermost of the flanges 19 cooperate with a similar flange 20 on the gear 16 to support a drum, 21, which is keyed to said flanges and which is hollow. "he drum 21 controls the cable (not shown) which is employed for pulling rods or tubing. It is preferred to connect the gear 16 and wheel 17 by bolts 22 engaged through the plates 18 and extending longitudinally of the frame, such bolts being shown more particularly in Fig. l.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the drum 21 and the brake wheel 17 are eliminated and a grooved tug wheel 23 is employed which, as previously noted carries the bull rope that operates the bull wheel. The Wheel 23 is provided with bearing plates 18 similar in construction to the bearing plates 18.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but, while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in thmproportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts without do parting from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
In a machine of the type set forth, the combination with a supporting frame, an engine, its crank shaft, and a pinion fast on said crank shaft, a. transverse shaft, a pinion fast on said transverse shaft, in mesh with said first named pinion, said second pinion having a hub extension, a brake wheel on said transverse shaft spaced away from said second pinion, a hearing plate carried by said brake wheel and having a hub extension, bolts connecting said brake wheeland said last named pinion, and a drum surrounding said shaft and engaged with said hub extension.
