Improvement in Hoisti'ng- Apparatus.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,737, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, MILES SHEPARD, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an apparatus for hoisting brick and mortar to the upper stories of a building, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my hoisting apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side View of one of the frames used in the apparatus; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of one of the pulleys.
A A represent two frames of any suitable description, provided each with a metal plate or bar, a, the upper end of which is bent at right angles, forming an car, through which passes a screw, 12, for adjusting the bearing B, as will be hereinafterdescribed. The bearing B has places for the ends of two shafts, G and D, and between said places or boxes isa slot, d, through which passes a screw, 6, forsecuring the bearing to the plate a and frame A. The lower shaft 0 is at one end provided with a crank, E, and pinion f, the pinion gearing with a cog-wheel, H, on the end of the upper shaft D. Near each end of this shaft, inside of the frame A, is placed a pulley or wheel, G,
j which wheels are connected by ropes mm with similar pulleys or wheels G placed upon a shaft, D, having its bearings in frames A A arranged at any height on the building desired-that is to whatever height it is desired to hoist the material. The wheels or pulleys G and G are grooved circumferentially, and in the groove is placed a ring, h, of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, so as to increase the friction of the cables and prevent them from slipping. The ropes or cables m m are connected by means of two sets of crossbars, I and J, the cables passing through clamp-bolts i 41 on said bars, and their ends tied together, as shown. By this means the cables may be readily adjusted to any desired length without injury to the cables. In the upper edges of the cross-bars J J are V- shaped notches, in which are placed the usual hods, K K, so that, while one set is being hoisted full, another set is going down empty,
and they may readily belifted off and carried to the place where wanted. The frames A A are supposed to be placed on the ground while the frames A A are arranged at whatever story of the building to which it is desired to hoist the material. The ropes or cables having been adjusted, as above described, they are tightened by means of the set-screws b b moving or forcing the bearings B B downward, they being allowed to slide on the screws c, on account of the slots d.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The sliding boxes or bearings B B, provided with slots d d and adjusted by means of the set-screws b 11, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The arrangement of the ropes or cables m m, clamp-bolts i i, and cross-bars I J, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the frames A A, shafts G D D, slotted sliding boxes B, grooved wheels or pulleys G G with rings h, cables m, cross-bars I J, clamp-bolts i, and hods K, all constructed and arranged as described, and operated by means of a crank, E, and gearwheels f H, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
