Description

waited tant para anta;
HANS ASMUS SOHNEEKLOTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 102,597, (Za-ted May 3, 1870.
nvnnovnn HoIs'rING APPARATUS.
nuv O-QH- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS AsMUs-SCHNEEKLOTH, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have in. vented a new and improved Hoisting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference lbeing had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved hoisting apparatus.
' Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view of one of the steppingroilers. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding `parts.
- This invention has for its object to so construct the hoisting apparatus, which is operated by men, that power may be applied vtoy it by means of the lower extremities, and not by the arms, as usually.
' The. invention consists chiefly in the application of treading-wheels to the driving-axle. The operators willV thereby be enabled to elevate loads by means of the legs and their own weight, and can therefore bring not only the strongest muscles but also the additionall weight into action.' r
A, in the drawing, represents thc fra-me of my irnproved hoisting apparatus.
In the sameA are the bearings of the driving shaft B, which carries the winding drum C.
Hoisting-ropes a b are secured tothe drum, preferably two, to opposite sides, so that one is wound on while the other is being unwouud, and vice versa.
-To the ends, or, if desired, to one end only of the shaft B, is mounted a treading-wheel, D, which is either composed of a series of steps, c c, that radiates d from a central hub, as in g. 3, or winch has roundsv d cl secured vbetween parallel rings or disks e, as'on thc`left-hand side of tig. 1.
' The operators stand-on the steps c or rounds d and transfer the weight successively from one tothe other,
thereby revolving the shaft and elevating the load.
For heavy loads a second drum, E, may, by suitable gearing j, be connected with the shaft B, in" which case the drum -O must be thrown out of action.
A suitable brake, F, may also be arranged on the apparatus for regulatingthe speed of descending weight. For elevating brick, vmortar, and other build-v ing material, this device is of especial value.
The hods G may be suspended from the ropes by means of bales y, secured to them as shown.
y t Having thus describedl my invention, g
I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The tread-wheels D D, constructed as described,
in combination with shaft B, pinion j, and spur-wheel I j", to operate shaft of drum E by the foot and weight of a man, as set forth. Y
2. The combination, with tread D D and shaft B, of the brake F, to regulate the speed of descending weights, as set forth.
HANS ASMUS SCHNEEKLOTH.
