ROLL.
Application filed October 18, 1922. Serial No. 595,256.
My invention relates to rolls, and particularly to a construction of roll especially adapted for use in paper making machines. The object of the invention is to provide a roll which will be both light and durable.
In carrying out the invention I provide a.
roll whose body portion is composed largely or entirely" of aluminum, and is therefore very light in weight. Outside of the aluminum body I provide a shell or covering of othermaterial, preferably copper or brass or rubber. This latter adds greatly to the dura bility of the roll, preventin deterioration of' various kinds which 0 ten occurs in aluminum.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of a portion of a paper making machine provided with table rolls embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view'of one of said table rolls on an enlarged so e, part of the same being broken aw for convenience of illustration;
Fig. 3,is across section taken on line 33 in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to' Fig. 3 of a modified form of construction.
Referring to the drawings and first to Figs. 1,2, and 3, I show a paper making machine of the Fourdrinier variety having a table 1 with a breast roll 2 and table rolls 3-3, over which passes a wire 4. The rolls 3 are'preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which 5 is a cylinder made of light metal, preferably aluminum, and 6 is a shell or covering over the same made of a different material preferably copper, brass or rubber, or the like. Such a roll will be very light because of the aluminum body, but will also be very durable, much more durable than aluminum alone, because d eterioration of the aluminum isprevented by the shell or coveringfi, it being known that in paper making machines, for example,
aluminumrglls will be unfavorably afi'ected by the paper pulp carried by the wire, the
chemical in the water being perhaps the chief cause of aluminum deterioration.
The outer covering or shell 6, as shown in 3,is constructed separately and applied mechanically to the inner body portion 5.
In Fig. 4, however, the outer covering or shell 6 is shown applied to the body '5 by means of electrolytic action.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and further that although the improved rolls are herein shown in connection witha paper making machine, theycan be advantageously used for other purposes. i
What I claim is:
1. A roll having its body portion made of metal of light weight and provided with a protective covering of a different and more durable material. i
2. A roll having its body portion made of aluminum and provided witha protectivecovering. 7
3. A paper making machine having rolls for the wire having their body portions made of aluminum and their exterior cylindrical surfaces made of a material not unfavorably aflected by paper pulp.
4. A roll having its body-portion made of metal of light weight'and provided with a protective covering of a different material.
5. A roll having its body portion made of aluminum and provided with a protective covering'of brass.
6. A roll having its body made of aluminum material and provided with a protective covering of a copper metal.
7 A roll embodying aluminum in its construction for purposes of lightness and also embodying other material arranged in a protective manner for protecting the aluminum againstunfavorable actionby the pamy name this 22nd day of September, A. D,
' ALONZO ALDRICH.
