IMPROVEMENT IN SAND AND EMERY PAPER FOR POLISHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,127, dated June 16, 1874; application filed March 3. 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANANIAS LAnGnoN, of W'inona, in the county of inona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand and Emery Paper or Cloth and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itpertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to sand or emery paper or cloth, especially for so-called sandpapering-machines. The paper is used upon the face of a revolving wheel, and is held in place by a band, which is ltced around the outer edge of the wheel, and holds between it and the wheel the edge of the paper, which is cut and folded over the edge of the wheel before the band is put on. It has been customary to use sheets of sand or emery paper or cloth with one entire surface covered with sand or emery, and hence a great waste of material, for the portion which is held under the band is not used, and the corners and trimmings are wasted; not only this, but, the portion which is inserted under the band being covered with sand, it is inconvenient to place the band on, in consequence of having to force it over so rough a surface, and when once in place the sand loosens, and the band is difficult to keep in place. To obviate this waste of material and inconvenience, Ihave invented the form and style of sand or emery paper hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing is shown one'sheet, which is cut into acirele of the required size to cover the face of the wheel, and also to lap over the edgis, as is usx'a'. in su h lrazhines, and as above described. Then the sand or emery is glued to the center portion of the paper A only, and the circle just large enough to cover the face of the wheel, leaving the outer edge B free from sand or emery, and in a smooth and good condition to crowd the band on to hold it in place on the wheel, as is usual with the ordinary sand-paper.

Having thus described my invention, I claim Sand or emery paper or cloth made as shown and described, with the center portion A covered with sand or emery, and the outer rim B left clean and free from sand or emery, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth and described.
