PAPER BOX Filed Jan. 26, 1932 INVENTOR ATTORN EYS l slightly greater than the outside dimensions of Patented Nov. v28, 1933 l UNITED STATES i PAT v PAPER BOX Frederick J: Peterson, College Point, N. Y., as-
signor to Shoup-Owens, Inc., Hoboken, N. J.,
a corporation of New Jersey Application January l2,6, 1932,v Serial No. 588,924 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-14) work. By my invention a uniform, superior construction is produced at a great saving of time, labor and expense. n
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my Vinvention in one of its preferred forms, in which-1v Fig. 1 is a cross section, showing part of the fintie together the locking rim and the walls of the ished box in perspective;
Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the various parts in perspective.
1 represents the body of a paper box, comprising a bottom, sides and ends, which may be produced in the usual way, no novelty residing in the construction or method of producing this particular part of the structure. 2 represents a piece of soft padding, usually of cotton or the like, which is designed to rest upon the bottom of the box body. 3 represents a sheet, preferably of soft, silk-like material, which constitutes a covering for the padding 2. The area of this `sheet is the box body, so that when the sheet is placed upon the upper edges of the body it will projectY slightly beyond the same. 4 is what I will `term a locking rim, one function of which is to stretch the sheet 3 smoothly over the padding 2 and lock its edges in place, hidingl the extreme edges ofA lightly on the upper edge of theboxbody l.. The
This locking crowded fully down,`the lower edgeiof the Vrim will tend topinch the fabric sheet `against the bottom of the body, to assist in holding A, it in place, so as to Vgive a smooth, slightlybulging and pillow-like effectto the pad in the bottom of the box. When the parts are thus assembled a finishing wrapper 5 is applied. This wrapper may have any suitable surface ornamentationor color andv ENT vol-*l-'lcEr" is suitably shaped so that it will cover and provide an attractive surface finish for as much of the outsideof the box body as desired, and'so that when its edges are folded inwardly over the upper edges'of the box body and locking rim and against the inside of the latter, it will lpermanently tie these two parts together. This wrapper 5 is held in place by suitable adhesive.` Any other suitable means may, if desired,.be employed alone or in addition to the wrapper 5 to box. By this construction and method ofl assembly the finished device may be characterized' as a machine product and, since little or no hand labor is required, great economies areeifected and a uniformity of product will result. L
I have not shown the lid or cover for the box,
since a lid' or cover of any ordinary `and well known construction `may be employed. If
desired, a similar construction of a size capabley of sliding over the finished box, as shownby dotted lines in Fig. l, may beused as a cover, in which eventk the contents of the box would be .protected fromk injury on the top and bottom by two opposed vsoft pads. K
It should be understood that various modifica',-A tions maybe made without departing from the follow-v I claim:
' In a device of `the character indicated, 'box locking rim and sidesof said box body being substantially flush'with each other, anda finishing wrapper secured to the outside of said box .body
and folded inwardly over the flush upper edges of said locking lrim and box body sides and` se-V cured to the inner sides of said locking rim .for u holding the latter in fabric locking position.
, FREDERICK J. PETERSON.
