To all tclzom it may concern:
Be it known that i, (rim B. alumnus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flexible Supports for Abrasive Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in flexible supports on the face of which is seemed an abrasive material such as sand, emery, corundum or similar abrasive or polishing substances.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a flexible support for abrasive materials whereby the flexible support may be detachably secured to the peripheral face of a grinding wheel or roll.
A further object of my invention is to prevent side movement of the flexible support on the face of the wheel or roll and I accomplish this object by forming on the back of the flexible support one or more raised sur faces in the form of thin ribs or lugs adapted to enter grooves or depressions in the face of the wheel or roll.
My invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of a flexible support for abrasive materials, whereby the flexible support is flrmly secured to the peripheral face of a grinding wheel or roll against circumferential or side movement caused by the abrasive surface of the flexible support coming into contact with the work, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved flexible support, showing the face of the same covered with an abrasive material and the construction of the enlarger'l or thickened ends of the support. Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking at the back of the flexible support on which is a series of raised surfaces in the form of thin longitudinal ribs adapted to enter grooves in the peripheral face of a grinding wheel or roll. Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking at the back of a modified form of flexible support on which is a series of raised surfaces in the form of thin lugs adapted to enter depressions in the peripheral face of a grinding wheel or roll. Fig. at is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2 in which the support is made of paper or similar material and the ribs 011 the back formed integral with the support. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 3 in which the llexibl support may be made of paper or cloth and the lugs secured to the back of the same. Fig. (i is a transverse sectional view of a still further modified form in which the raised ribs or lugs are formed integral with a flexible backing which is secured to the back of the flexible support by cement or other means.

The raised surfaces of a on the back (1 may be in the form of thin longitudinal ribs, as shown in Fig. 2, or in the form of lugs, as shown in Fig. 3. These raised surfaces may be formed on the back integral with the sheet of flexible material, as shown in section in Fig. 4-, or formed separate, as shown in Fig. 5, of the same material or of metal and so aired to the back in any well known way. The enlarged ends a. a may be formed on the material by first folding a strip of thin metal ovcrthe ends of the material, asshown'in broken lines in Fig. 1, and then bending the fold over, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, or the ends of the material may be formed into a roll and riveted through, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of my improved flexible sup ports for abrasive materials the raised surfaces a a on the back are adapted to outer grooves or depressions in the peripheral face of a wheel or roll and the enlarged ends a a are adapted to be mechanically secured in the w reel or roll through a slot or slots in the face of the same, thereby del'aclnibly securing the flexible support with the abrasive material to the wheel or roll, and by the use of my improved flexible supports with the abrasive materials, the same is firmly held on the peripheral face of the wheeler roll against circumferential or side movement when in use.
