CHARLES TRACHTENBER-G, 0E BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SUITCASE, are.
Application filed November 30, 1923.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARLES Tnaorrrnnsnae, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suitcases, Etc, of
which the following is a specification sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to utilize the same.
While my improvements are applicable to hand satchels, valises, portmanteaus, and analogous types of portable receptacles generally, they are designed more particularly for use in conjunction with suit cases, so called in the trade; the object bein primarily to provide detachable means for the support of a tray or equivalent auxiliary device; and secondarily to provide a tray which is foldable in box shape and adapting it for use as a vanity case, or separate container, all as hereinafter fully set forth,- the invention consisting in the specific construction, combination and arrangement of parts and appurtenances described and claimed, and a distinctive feature being the use of a plurality of detachable longitudinal shelf-bars for the support of said removable container.
I have herein exemplified a practical embodiment of the essential feature of my in vention in a portable hand suit case of a well known type, although I do not confine myself to the identical configuration of parts shown, since modifications in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients, may be resorted to with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
With this understanding,
Fig. 1, represents a perspective view of my improved suit case, with the cover raised, and the foldable box tray fully extended in position;
Fig. 2, is a similar view, with the foldable box tray closed upon itself but supported on the shelf-bars within the body of the case;
Fig. 3, is a perspective view of one of the shelf-bars, broken away centrally;
Fig. 4, is a perspective view, like unto Figs. 1 and 2, without the foldable box tray;
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the foldable box tray removed from the suit case and partly opened up;
Fig. 6, is a central longitudinal section Serial N 0. 877,679.
of the suit ease closed, with the folda-blebox tray also closed, and in position within the casing.
The body portion B, of the case or receptacle is of the usual elongate rectangular shape, and is provided with the ordinary cover C, hinged thereto, and is otherwise furnished with the customary adjuncts, such as a handle it, and fastening devices 7', in a manner well known in the art.
S, S, are the longitudinal shelf-bars, two or more of which may be used to afford adequate means for the support of the removable tray T. The extremities of each of the said shelf-bars S, S, are formed with shouldered end bearings s, s. for engagement with the inner sides and edges of the end members i), Z), of the case B, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and a, of the drawings. Each shelf-bar S, is also formed with a truss-flange 5, extending between the shouldered end bearings s, s, to stiffen and reinforce the fiat upper or shelf surface 8), of the bar S, which surface 8*, is for direct contact with the under side of the tray T, as supported within the case body B. The
- shelf-bars may be made rectangular in cross section, thus affording both bearing surface s, and truss-flange s. i
The tray T, is of novel construction in that it consists of two sections f, 6 articularly connected at their medial upper edges and is provided with locking means t 2 whereby the two sections If, F, may be held closed in box fornn-thus constituting an auxiliary receptacle that may be used independently as a vanity box, or for any analogous purpose, when desired, without impairing its function as a tray as related to the body portion B, of the case.
WVhat I claim is my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a portable hand case, a support adapted to rest upon the upper edges of opposite walls of the case, and a bodily-removable tray resting thereupon and formed of two sections articularly united directly to each other at adjacent walls to rest one upon the other in the same vertical plane.
2. In a portable hand case, a support adapted to rest directly upon the upper edges of opposite walls of the case, and a bodilyremovable tray resting thereupon and formed of two sections articularly united directly to each other at adjacent walls to rest the one upon the other in the same vertical plane when folded, said support emtica-l plane when folded, six-id support embodying a shelf and a depending truss bodyi'nge sheli'iandatruss flange depending flange.
adapted to rest directly upon the upper condition of the tray. edges of opposite walls of the case, and abodily removable trey resting thereupon and CHARLES TRACHTENBERG. formed of two sections artieularly united Vitnesses: 7 directly to each other at adjacent Walls to MURRAY A. HARRIS,
